4 questions

Post by micheljq »

Hello,

I have 4 big questions :

1. When is the release date?
2. Will there be multiplayer and/or Play by Email available?
3. Do you think a demo of this game will be released?
4. Looks somewhat similar to Master of Orion II, a classic in the genre, is it related to Master of Orion in some way? Not a bad thing because MOO2 was a classic for me.

Thank you,

In regards to your questions,
while I have not personally tested it, this is what I know

1. When is the release date? A Matrix officially announced soon, but I saw weeks not months before they edited the comment.
2. Will there be multiplayer and/or Play by Email available? I don;t know.
3. Do you think a demo of this game will be released? I hope so.
4. Looks somewhat similar to Master of Orion II, a classic in the genre, is it related to Master of Orion in some way? Not a bad thing because MOO2 was a classic for me.
It was a classic for me too, ( I still have the orginal CD rom) however this game seems like a Super Beefed up version of Starships Unlimited!3 to me. The best part is that it incorporates MOO2 stuff. I think one of the most important reports from a tester is that this is really a hybrid of all the best 4x games out there, and makes something new. Which is a great thing, and all reports are that they have accomplished this in a good way.

1: Matrix will never divulge... [;)]
2: There is not at this time.
3: No.
4: I don't see any similarities. TBS versus RTS for one thing. DW is a game unlike any other space game I've seen. There are not any good comparisons I know of. Maybe a RTS Civ4 in space?! [&:]

I've spent a ton of hours playing Starships Unlimited3 3 and that may be the best comparison now that you brought that game up. On steroids though. The concepts of trading and pirates are similar. Good thought there. Hmmm...

In the reply to my So Sweet thread, a Matrix Employee edited their post, but I have the original comments as follows.

Now I don't want to put words in a edited mouth, but I think it is at least safe to assume it will be next month.!! [:)]

The question pretty much pinpoints a day, a date. To this we have no idea. Month? I don't know. [&:]

More like Europa Universalis in Space, bit RTS Civ4 in space will do!

Larry and I both share the same statement that this is unlike any 4X, and actually unlike most any other GAME, we have played. In a very good way.

Thank you,
I think these questions have already been answered nicely by others.

But I'll add another thought: the focus of the game design was to try and model things in a fairly detailed way so that there's lots of flexibility in how you can interact with the game.

So I've tried to avoid abstractions that dumb things down, e.g. abstract trade routes that 'magically' move resources around. Instead most of the transport, etc really happens. So there's a lot of background activity that adds interest, and that you can defend (or blow up, if it belongs to your enemy [:)]

This also means that the galaxy is packed with stuff to discover and exploit. There's always something happening.

Here's another question. Have the developers thought of making the game moddable or, ideally, open source? When the game's sales will finally go down, please remember that the world needs a working open source 4X game and FreeOrion is certainly not it. That is unless you hope to make millions on it, in which case you really should have gone with another Xbox 360 Halo clone. Please consider.

The game has extensive built-in support for modding. You can customize artwork, settings in text files, etc.

It's not open-source however.

This is good news. One thing I enjoy is adding my own sounds or SFX to games like Moo3. I also like the community mods of SEIV with the classic Sci-Fi races. I am assuming far more talented people than I am will be able to create custom race mods for DW.

Removed question about automation after viewing new video.[;)]

I hope that it is not Civ4 in space.

Looking forward to see ST+SW+B5 all-in-one mod. Imagine all these funky aliens/ships and more than familiar names. Bring it on.

In all honestly, DW could be best (and last) chance for BOTF2. Good engine, highly moddable, with massive galaxy you can easily mod every aspect of ST universe. My word, I can't wait... unless it is Civ4 in space, then there is no chance in hell I will buy it.[:D]

Sounds like a winner. I will be watching closely.

Indeed.
For me this look like combined Europa Universalis with Space Empire IV. Also with some bit of Starship Unlimited.
No experience for ships though. Bah.
If it wont be buggy and AI will be good that can be a breaktrough in macro scale 4x space games.
I have hope high but I am afraid that I expect to much.
Anyway bring it on!

Ah Space Empires IV, a great game rendered nearly unplayable with the most horrible interface and controls ive ever encountered in a game :P
Judging from the videos and screens, the interface in this game seems great, Civ4 great =)
