Subs Attacking On Surface (not happening)

Post by Echo »

Since about version 1.20 or so, I have not seen any sub attacks on the surface against unescorted transports and non-combatants.

I understand people have seen them attack barges on the surface, but I would like to see them still hitting unescorted transports on the surface as well. Its not happening.

As it is, the combat screen will appear, and it will say sub is attacking on the surface, but it never fires a shot.
Peace through superior firepower!

I played v1.40 a lot (vs AI and in PBEM) and I saw subs attacking
on surface several times. I even saw my IJN sub kill 2000 AP with
guns.

Response...

Subs will still do surface attacks, but much more rarely. A patch change a few versions back made the sub skipper consider the guns he was facing a bit more carefully. Thus, he may begin to surface, then spot a lot more firepower in the TF than he wants to mess with and abort the attack. However, situaitons with transports that are damaged, lightly armed or have no significant escorts should still lead to surface attacks.

Erik,
I've had US subs pass on attacking single barges on the surface after not attacking with torpedoes. I've seen a huge decrease in surface sub combat, in fact I'm wondering if I've seen any since the change a few versions back. The change may have been a bit too excessive.

Barges as subkillers!!

Post by BPRE »

Eric,

I remember some old thread with a lot of complaints about barges being the best sub killers in the game. I've also lost subs to barges so maybe it is correct to avoid attacking them on the surface.

BPRE,
I used to use barges as sub distractors, using them to use up sub ammo since they cost no VP's. I don't recall seeing them sink subs though. I still think the subs are chickening out on surface attacks far too often. Last night I had many sub attacks and not one surface fight even though I had many attempts at it. Even damaged transports with two torps in them wouldn't get surface attacked by subs! I never saw any escort attacks on my subs so I'm wondering why the sub surface attack seems so rare now after they changed it. I remember seeing torpedo attacks during the surface combat and now it never happens so once again I wonder what gives? I just think they overdid it when they made the sub commanders "think twice" before making a surface attack. Now the sub commanders seem to be "Chickens of the Sea".

Eric,

I think I lost a sub to a barge once and I definitely had them shooting back and hitting the sub.

Otherwise I agree with you. It's very unusual that a sub actually engages on the surface anymore.

In one of my PBEM games going, I had a sub surface and attack a TK.

And speaking of barges... Matrix: can we get something that will let me tell my subs NOT to attack barges? I find these attacks rarely succeed (don't know why), but waste ammo anyway.

Just my opinion.
