Pacific War - what should i get and why?

Post by Anguille »

I am about to finally purchase a game on the Pacific theater but hesitate between the various games:

- War in the Pacific
- Carriers at War
- Warplan Orange.

I have Uncommon Valour which i still haven't really played.

Thanks

It depends on how in depth you want to go. Playing Uncommon Valour will give you somewhat of an idea of how WitP(I have the old one) plays but on a vastly greater scale.
Dont know about the Matrix Version of CaW as I only played the old one but its a 100 times easier than WitP. Thats my guess based on the older version I have.

Personally it depends on how much free time you have because you really wont be doing much else but play WitP. But its one hell of a ride.

I think you ought to get on Uncommon Valor's case...it's a great wee game. Indepth enough to keep you busy and not swamp you. It will also give you an idea of how War in the Pacific works.

Carriers at War I couldn't recommend. I bought it and was extremely disappointed with the tactical options and scenarios available. It may be better now, but it wasn't worth the money when it was released.

Seriously - use and be happy with Uncommon Valor, then come back and try one of the other options!

Anguille,

It depends almost entirely on how insane you are, and to a lesser extent if you plan on having a life outside of wargaming.

Listen to the Judge. Play what you have, and then come back and decide how far you want to jump.

And if you're short on budget, you can always download "Pacific War" for free.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Thanks for the replies so far...can't say you're really encouraging me [;)]

Honestly...if i was a sane person, i'd stop buying games cos i have enough games for a lifetime (that and being married and having a child)!

Uncommon Valour is on my list to play as i was a big fan of Task Force 1942 (anyone?).

Still, i wanted something covering the entire theater of the Pacific War. Is it possible to automate some aspects in WitP:AE or do you have to micromanage everything?

I have to say that i like Carriers...are they well represented in WitP:AE or they of little importance?

Thanks again

lol - he said "is it possible to automate some aspects in WitP:AE" aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha

Wouldn't have thought so...not much anyway (if anything). WitP genre is all about micro management from what I could tell, though I do not have AE.

As far as Carriers being well represented in AE - they're well represented in UV, so it stands to reason they are in AE, if not better.

If you don't have many time which is required to WitP,I suggest to buy War Plan Pacific.
This game can be shotly playing and has CV battles.

WPP is so pathetic in comparison to WitP AE, that it makes one feel sorry for the developer. [:(]

Just checked the promo video on youtube...it's very chess or Axis & Allies like...doesn't have to be bad if the AI is good but it's not really what i am looking for at the moment.

Well.I'm just compare WPP and WitP for actual playing time.
I think no one compare to WitP.But WitP also requires an ultimate free time.[;)]

Maybe, your best choice is ,as already said, playing UV short scenarios and master it.

I've been eyeing HPS's Naval Campaigns: Guadalcanal for a while. Its between that and UV for my next wargame.

Get UV, its great.
Witp is the same thing but a bit more micro management. It uses the Sims 3 engine.
You get to play at the day to day level of everyone who took part in WW2.

WitP AE has a Guadalcanal scenario which roughly covers UV - but with a vast improved engine. In my opinion there is no need to settle for anything less, when one can have the best naval simulation. But each to his own for sure.

Well...War in the Pacific/AE is my suggestion for BEST Pacific theater game of all time, however, may I ask, why haven't you played Uncommon Valor yet? Are you just not that captivated by the game? If not, then WITP may not be your cup of tea.

I've just reinstalled UC and am busy learning the game. The problem with these types of games is not that they are not my cup of tea but that there's a long period of learning...i prefer to play. However, i am learning UC and believe that i will move to WITP when the time is right cos i like these monsters and want a serious/deep game on the Pacific War...

Cheers

If you want something bridging the gap between WPP and WitP, then you might try the demo of Strategic Command, Pacific Theater, or wait for Storm over the Pacific.  SC has a very active modding community with an awesome editor, TOAW like, there are global variants of WW2 and operational level scenarios also, like Peleliu, Iwo, Okinawa, etc.

Totally disagree on 'pathetic'. It's certainly nowhere near as complex, but it plays a heck of a lot faster, is sensibly priced and is a nice enough little game IMHO. There's a demo, Anguille, so you can judge for yourself.

As to CaW I enjoyed it rather more than JD, I think, but its certainly not one of my my top Matrix purchases. Thing is, though, all the games are very different and it really comes down to what you want. WitP:AE is the 'best', most would probably agree, but you might well consider simply if you have the free time to do it justice.

Very generic on the eye candy.

Jutland is good, if you like to refight the battle repeatedly.
