A short report and jump to 8th of March.

Just mopping up left in Sumatra and Java (including one massive concentration of Dutch troops).
We're ready to move on Timor and capture the surrounding bases. Should be done within 2 weeks.

Supply build up and preparations for Phase II is continuing.
Some 200 enemy ac in Calcutta, 50 / 50 fighters and bombers plus lots of aux.

No doubt Andy is standing by waiting to react.

Received the first Nick fighter bomber unit and a Helen Army bomber formation.
Still not in full production so I've placed them in reserve.

The period from April and throughout the rest of 1942 should be very interesting! [8D]
Will just report highlights until then...invading dot bases doesn't cause lots of exitement.

Just a post to de-lurk and let you know I'm enjoying the ride. As is my way, I'm not reading Andy's version of this war in order to avoid revealing anything to either side I shouldn't.

Looking forward to Phase II!

Thx for the lurk-in guys [;)]
Got a sun burned back, otherwise feeling OK Rob!-)

Still not a lot to report, but will get back to it shortly when we're ready with Phase II.
Seems like Andy is sitting idle not knowing where the KB is and were I'll strike next.

Sank another tanker outside Brisbane today while loosing an AKL outside Borneo - US sub hit it with duds,
then re-engaged on the surface, sinking it but only after taking a 8cm gun hit in return.

We've also invaded Timor and the last bases in Sumatra and DEI are being taken care of.
Estimate one more week to finish this part, Phase II will then commence almost immediately.

Troops in Manila actually started loading into transports today; the 16th Army is powerful and includes
2 divisions, 1 brigade, 4 regiments, 4 tank regiments, 4 recon regiments, 4 engineer regiments and numerous support and artillery units.

The Nick fighter bombers that arrived are being moved to Rangoon, should give us some protection against 4E's.

Got a few pictures from Singapore for you;

My own HQ; Goodwood Hotel, former Teutonian House build by German colonist in the early 1900's based on architecture from old Rhine castles. - Was taken over by the British in WWI, made into a Hotel and used by Japanese officers during WWII and then for the war tribunals after the war.

Couldn't have found more suitable lodgings! [8D]

Image

Built in 1900, Goodwood Park Hotel began as the Teutonia Club - an exclusive enclave for the expatriate German community in Singapore. In 1929, the Manassehs turned Goodwood Hall into Goodwood Park Hotel, catering to travelling businessmen from Malaya. This 5 star heritage hotel became one of the best-known hotels at the end of the nineteen thirties and among the noted guests from that period was the Duke of Windsor, later the Prince of Wales of England. For over 100 years, the Hotel withstood the ravages of time, endured many transitions and the passing of two World Wars till today, where she stands out as a beacon of Singapore’s rich and cultural heritage.

Contrary to popular belief the naval guns in Singapore did engage the enemy;
A Japanese troop ship and a cargo ship were sunk by guns of Fort Siloso.
The large naval muzzels were also turned around and fired on the approaching Japanese as they approached Singapore city, cause heavy casualties.

Those guns certainly have the confectionary kiosk well covered [;)]. Wouldnt want to be a japanese invader in need of a quick snack there [:D].

seriously though i would assume those trees are new (last 60 years) growth as i cant even see the Sea from that gun emplacement.

Those are actually old 8 and 9.2 inch breech loaders that were found near Singapore and brought to the Fort for display.
- British probably tossed the old guns away when obsolescent! The gun on the top of the kiosk is the smaller gun being loaded on this picture;

Timor fell today as well as the last enemy base in Sumatra.
- Only the major enemy stand on Java left, no hurry there. Will attempt the first attack next turn.

My goal is not to rush out as quickly as possible to capture as many bases as possible.
In my last AAR game we did this in India and came within 100 point of the auto victory on 1/1-43.

The goal in this game is not an auto victory or capture as much terrain as possible, but to put Japan
in the optimal strategic position by the time the tide of the war turns. This means securing the bases that are necessary
for an optimal defense, many of which will have to be abandoned by the time Allied supremacy makes it impractical to keep them.

A secondary goal is to weaken enemy naval forces as much as possible and interdict supply lines and build up operations across the Pacific.

Bandoeng was indeed a hard nut to crack; only got 1-2 odds, reduced one fort level - down to 2.
Ca 2600 casualties on both sides but fatigue and disruption was as high as 80 after a single attack.
Need to rest 5-6 days before attacking again. Will move in local reserves to boost assault value.

- Good thing is that these troops are not ear marked for Phase II so this little siege will have no consequences.
Phase II on its own is actually divided into sub phase A, B and C.

A good week and we should be ready to go, stay tuned for news from Tokyo Rose!-)

That one isn't very cool PzB - Glens are the only seaplanes which could be put on the subs, as it was designed specially for this use. Jakes would be way to big to fit. It's a cool idea but it's a little gamey... [;)]

What he said. You could do it the other way around though and use glens on your surface raiders deep in the enemys back yard. So when they get spotted they think that, hey, it's just a sub... And then the cruiser appears over the horizon...

I know, but the sub was modified to accomodata a slightly larger seaplane - payback for those early P-38's!-)
Doesn't have much of a consequence except from scaring someone, felt for a little mischief here the other day [:'(]

Hehe, if I could afford sending out another heavy cruiser I'd consider it.
My conclusion is that the merchant raiders have to little bang for the buck - run out of ammo after firing a few rounds and any engagements with escorts will force them to RTB.
