Play AE. If you're going to take a plunge into a game of this height, depth and width then go the extra step, you won't regret it.

RE: WITP or WITP AE
Still playing both, with an ongoing WitP CHS game. In my opinion, there is way too much new goodness in AE to ever go back. When my current CHS pbem game is finished, I'll be uninstalling WitP from my laptop.

RE: WITP or WITP AE
I really like many of the upgrades in AE, but I do sincerely struggle with several major drawbacks, inlcuing the unnecessary complexity and rigidity of plane subtyping for marginal gains, allied heavy bomber allocations, land and air replacement factors / issues, limited ship conversions for certain critical types but basically unlimited for other less important types, and certain aspects of Japanese production overcomplexities. I also have a few omissions on my docket to toss over the fence at some point. I do realize this is a fingers in the pudding simulation, and it is largely successful. The whole concept is to get into the knitting. The fact that lines are drawn in different places with different aspects of the game is tough to understand. The aspects of the game that are 100% spot-on leave me longing where others seem so obviously out of place.
That said, I will not go back to WITP. This is some crackerjack design work. I am working the editor where I can change my own little war without the necessity of involving anyone else into my reality. That will get me much of the way to where I want to take it.
As an example of an omission I would love to see added - when ships are sunk in friendly ports size 3 or higher (at anchor, shipyard, docked - not just in the hex), the owning player should be able to raise them under the right conditions, unless the ship suffered a critical hit when it was sunk or is under 2500 tons. This could be accomplished by requiring 100 naval support points per durability point (or 10x tonnage). When the required points are amassed, the ship is raised. The ship gains 25 major damage across types and half of weapon systems are invalidated. The ship is placed in shipyard if available or directly to stood down / docked) If the port is subsequently captured the ships are destroyed permanently, but no new vps are awarded. VP's are not lost for other player if ship is raised, and VP's are awarded again if the ship is subsequently sunk again.

Well I tried to play UV... [:D]
AE is simply better than original WitP. I see no reason to ever play WitP again.

I still have 3 CHS games going, and still enjoy them, but any new games will be AE. BTW, the game with Tupolev I took over from you is done. He surrendered in August 44.

LOL! That was the game where I just "couldn't" anymore. I was so used to AE's improvements over WITP and was forgetting that I didn't have them at hand in WITP lead me to just erase WITP. Incidentally, I told Tupolev that I would continue if he couldn't find a replacement for me, but not to expect three turns a day. Did you continue the DEI push?

Yes I pushed up through the DEI, ended owning Mindanao and Leyte, and Luzon was isolated with a major force loading up for a landing at Lucena. The decisive battle though was for Padang. He threw everything at it, and it was really close for a while. At one point he got 1.9 to 1 odds on the base with the forts down to zero. The Brits were badly mauled, but the issue was decided when the US carriers intervened preventing further reinforcement. That effort left him fairly thin on the ground elsewhere so there were plenty of weak spots to go after, and the move north to the PI was relatively easy. The final blow was when my CVs along with a bunch of B29s pummeled his main base at Takao, nailing several hundred planes and a good chunk of his surface fleet.
An exciting game with a strong opponent. We'll be starting an AE game soon. As soon as I figure out a dark side turn 1. [&:]

RE: WITP or WITP AE
My landing at Padang caught him off guard. In fact, he only learned of it when he sent a small force to finally take the port and they stumbled into my landing which was only a few days old.

AE,i uninstalled WITP day after playing AE,way better game.
RE: WITP or WITP AE
Liked CHS...Finding AE a bit complex.....But probably a bit more on the realistic side.
Actually am a huge UV fanboy. Would love to see it redone using AE engine. As the sides were pretty equal it was a good joyride.

RE: WITP or WITP AE
There is a nasty learning curve due to the complexity of AE just as there was with WITP, but once you get past that AE is a much much better game. I installed windows 7 over the holidays and never bothered reinstalling WITP.

AE, I play as Allies against the AI and find the AI much more challenging.
