State of the Game

Post by vettim89 »

Having pledge to myself that I would abstain from an AE PBEM until patch 3, I was wondering how the game is evolving? Have to admit I am getting the itch to be involved of late. I have been reading a lot of AAR's and have picked up on some of the issues. I was just wondering what the consensus is are far as how far the first two patches have addressed the issues.

Specifically I was wondering about:

* Nuke ARTY bombardments

* Pilot training

* China

I waited until January to come to the dark side. More pluses than minuses. Add the fleixbility of the editor to mold to your own tastes, and I would suggest changing over. FYI, I think China is a problem, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the hyper plane-subtyping. FYI, It is pretty easy to brush aside the chinese, too easy in my view.

Take the plunge ! Playing AE whitens your teeth, clears up your skin, is non-fattening and will not lead to pregnancy.

I'm a new player, who never played WitP. I love this game! You have amazing patience if you have been waiting all this time.

As for the hyper plane sub-typing, though, I don't much like it at all... maybe I will warm up to it in the end. I'm worried that it will come down to just a few min-maxed plane types that end up being worthwhile to upgrade to.

btw, I see that you are posting from Iraq. Good luck, keep safe and god bless !

I am still grappling with plane upgrades as a Jap. player. I keep changing my mind on the best plane mix and resulting upgrade paths.

I'm in mid-Feb 42 as Japan. I have not employed more than 6 artillery anywhere yet and haven't seen the devastating artillery attacks.

Pilot training is an area that I didn't get a firm enough grasp on until about 3 weeks into the game. Most of my pilots will take about 2 months to get trained up to 70 experience in a primary area. For fighters, just Air experience is required. Many of my other pilots will need to get better in one other area to truly be useful. As Japan, your Nell/Betty will need at least a 50 experience in Naval Search. I have put them on Naval Attack/Rest with 20% Naval Search and have SC TF bombard a base. I look and see that their Naval Search experience is below 30 for most pilots. [:(]

China - I started after the latest patch. It takes a few weeks of moving troops around to met garrison requirements and free up stronger units. I might get close to 5000 AV after all this is done (add in early reinforcements). Good, but not enough to run over the whole country by mid-42.

Well I was wondering if the Big B approach might work. In his WiTP mod he inflated the Chinese Army in numbers but made the bulk of the units Static in the major cities. Ergo the Chinese could not really undertake an effective offensive bu they couldn't be rolled over either. Granted this is an ahistorical fix for a game problem. That said it worked.

I have been holding off starting a PBEM for the same reason vettim89, and thanks for the nod on my WitP mod.

However, because of vanity I suppose, I would like you to know that my China fix wasn't really a-historical at heart.
The units I gave China in that game were the best match I could find by research (in English language sources) as to what was actually available in China at any given time covered in the game (though the leaders, placement and unit designations etc., were freely made up - and TO&E was the best I could do - with collaboration from Treespider...CHS's China guru).
Also the designations I used - Provisional Army & Central Army(KMT) etc., - were also taken from sources and not made up.

I know you meant no disrespect or offense - and believe me none was taken...heck I'm just gratified you even remembered it and mentioned it!

That Big B mod was my fav. It made China the quagmire it should be. Even so, it couldn't prevent the Japanese from buying units out of China wholesale. IRL the Japanese DID buy quite a few divisions, but you could buy more than that.

It's really tough to simulate China completely historically. In order to do so, the Allied player would have his orders ignored 90% of the time, 10% of all supplies would disappear mysteriously, and your ops report would be filled with complaints from General Stillwell. It will never be perfect.

As anyone has read my WitP AARs, Brian's Mod was THE Mod to play. In my humble opinion...

My solution,

d6 beside the computer and I make up a number and try to roll the matching number. If it matches you can proceed with you attack, move units to a new base etc.

You get some good results, about one time in six.

while I really enjoyed BigB mod the problem with the huge but often static numbers of Chinese units in this mod made me soon taking out those bases by cutting them off. The Chinese bases with the static units were then taken out one by one, leading to quite an amount of victory points for ground losses.
