RE: WitP lovers report in
I'm still mostly in the WITP world. My game with Feinder and 3 other PBEMs keep me going, as I want to finish them. Three are in mid-late 1944, the other in mid-43. Hopefully we can get to a conclusion before the pilot bug strikes.
I did start one AE PBEM, only in late December 41 now, and I'm enjoying it immensly. The enhancements are generally great, my one reservation being search arcs seems like micromanagement for it's own sake.
Any future games for me will be AE.

I had the same thing happen in my only PBEM, I was playing allies and was tab slower then historical due to carrier losses, when the Pilot bug hit, It killed any chance for me to play another PBEM until it gets fixed, which looks like it won't so i'm leaning towards a better AI at this point.

Had to stop my WITP game due to pilot bug and although they say it can't be fixed without a restart I'm still hoping that someone figures a way to fix it for in progress games so we can resume it some day.
Otherwise, I think WITP is still great, but won't start another WITP game until pilot bug is addressed.

What's the Pilot Bug?
Is it only in PBEM?

When you have too many pilots on map (it hit us at around 27,500), the game kills off about 20-30% of them at once, and in random fashion, so you can end up losing about a third of your best pilots (and your worst as well, but crappy pilots are easy to replace). It is because the array that stores pilots isn't big enough. Fixed in AE but not WITP.
Probably could happen in single player, but it is more likely in PBEM since human's keep their air units full of pilots.

Lol! Forced retirement.
Hope they patch even if a restart is required.
Those with ongoing games can still keep the old version though.

Anyway. Just an update. I am now continuing my AE campaign.
RE: WitP lovers report in
I've just started up a campaign. I've owned WITP since it was released, but was intimidated by scale and only played the Solomons campaign, basically using it as a glorified UV. I took the plunge with WPO and found the campaign managable. After dealing with that for a while, I started the WITP campaign, and after picking up the pieces of the game start, I have a rhythm going. I'm about a week into the game now, which is a record for me. POW and Repulse did a number on the transports landing troops in the north, though I lost POW.
I don't know if I'll finish the whole war or not here, but it will give me the courage to fire up AE. WPO was invaluable to me in getting used to the geography and basic setup of the Pacific war. WITP will be just as valuable in getting me comfortable with AE.

Beta testing WPO was what taught me the fine art of triggering surface engagements (in WitP). But yes, it is a valuable thing that each game essentially can become a learning tool for the next.

RE: WitP lovers report in
I remember when I first bought WITP and loaded it up I was so overwhelmed thatI just started a game for fun where I played both sides and my aim was to annihilate the allies. I had them take over Tori Shima and then spoon fed fleets towards Japan with everything "off". Also had the base loaded with allied aircraft and had it bombed continuously. I dunno why exactly I did this but for awhile it was fun just destroying the mighty americans!! lol Anyways I played for maybe 2 months of this then the game went on my shelf gathering dust and I got caught up in other games. Now that I'm totally into it now and understand it more and more with every turn, I dont see myself stopping ever!

Regarding save game editors Witp AE lets you edit Devices,Units and ships while you are playing, I did it a few times in my current game as I started under the original game and it works. So no more resterting if there is an error in the scenario.

I'm still playing WitP, mostly because I don't have time enough to do the transition.
RE: WitP lovers report in
My 2 WITP PBEMs are moving along with the one in late 1943 and Japan (me) cut off from the SRA. Repeat after me, Never Ever Lose the KB if you want a chance in the game.
That said when one ends I'll be seriously jumping into AE.

WITP and AE are two fine games.
I have been playing PBEM WITP for over two years. Gonna stay with it until the end. (I am looking forward to the next patch.)
However, AE has captured my solo play. Andy Mac's AI is dong a fine job against me.

[:D]hehe - I find I am doing the opposite - AE for PBEM and WITP for "versus the AI". I find I must keep playing WITP (a) because it is "fun" ... and (b) to keep my self in constant reminder mode about what are the differences (since these types of questions arise daily).

I started a new game this January while recovering from surgery. This is a great game to play when you are not in the mood or physical condition to play click fest RTS games like Medival total war or Company of heroes. As far as the pilot bug goes I micro manage all my squadrons.
