RE: Colombo Raided

Post by Andy Mac »

I would almost welcome an attack on Ceylon but I am a little lost I know he will strike somewhere but I have no idea where.

I guess I need to wait and see.

All is quiet at present.

Forces are starting to coalese into their defensive locations another Div is eno route for the SOPAC so we will see what is next.

I would like to be able to reinforce New Cal tot he extent that I am confident of holding it I am not there yet but its getting closer

Not a lot to say String finally revealed his hand and invaded Ceylon

Over the last few weeks my losses have been painfull I really hate the Jap amphib bonus where he landed 5 ish Divs in a day at Koggala a lvl 1 port

Anyway spearheads are driving on Colombo

I estimate 5 or 6 Divs against my 3 behind lvl 4 forts.

Not sure how it will go as this time I have good troops there.

We shall see

When is the amphib bonus expiring? Wasn´t it four months? This would have meant 7 March. [&:]

No surprise. He likes to hit Ceylon. Supply will decide.

This was my latest attempt to send them all in at the same altitude after several days of alterign altitutde to optimal and getting slaughtered

RE: Colombo Raided

Post by castor troy »

I have given up on waiting for anything that gets close to a combined strike, heck I´m waiting for combined strikes for over four months in my PBEM. Kereguelen took a look at my game and gave me a hint what "could" or what "is" the reason for this and while it would make sense, it would make the game, very very hard to play IMO, if not impossible with the given pps. He said he would bring it up on the dev forum but I´ve got no info yet if it really is what you need to get combined strikes. The funny thing is that I had NEVER a single combined strike yet, not out of India, not out of Australia. For me it isn´t working correctly, even if there would be a die roll, I guess I can´t miss it 100% of the time in 4 months game time, especially when I meet all other conditions but this single one. [&:] It wasn´t the norm in real life to have attacks of 40-50 ac being split up into four or five strikes. Unfortunately I´ve been seeing split up strikes all the time and all the time in this case is none of my usual exaggerations. It´s fine when things can go wrong, but shouldn´t there only be the possibility to see things go wrong instead of having them going wrong all the time? Piece meal strikes can easily double or tripple your losses while the enemy just laughs his a$$ off.

Those couple of sweeps that went in seem to have all been bounced, means all your fighters were just sitting ducks. If you want to have a slight chance, put them as high as you can and hope to be higher than your opponent. This will lead to a "who gets higher" game though but that´s how it works. Either you do it, or you will get bounced until 1946 when you fly at 15-20k ft and your opponent above. The bounce easily can convert a 1:3 into a 1:1 or 2:1 in my experience. Your biggest problem here though, the Oscar can go higher than any of your fighters.

Am suffering from the same problem with units not taking replacements due to this "upgrade" bug and as my opponent seems to take on India too (5,5 divs landed at Cox Bazar) I´ve got to think about halting it too until the patch is out. There are a whole lot of PBEMs infected and it IS a show stopper.

Not really a lot to say I suspect String has me defeated at Colombo but this time I am not running.

Lvl 4 forts 120k supplies and 1200 AV with loads of AA guns I need to stand and fight.

All my units are prepped for Ceylon and more are en route if they can get through his blockade.

I have lost shed loads of fighters and bombers my aircraft just wont co ordinate despite air HQ and good pilots.

Air superiority is lost but I need to keep fighting - I shoulda studied Nemo's tactics a little more and not committed to a battle I cannot win

I have a few more suprises en route including anopther 100+ P39D's

OK he has arrived at Colombo and its timne to try again with the fight back.

I am trying something new

My best AVM and the 221 RAF Gp HQ has assembled at Trivandrum

Actually ordered to serve under that HQ cost me 200 PP's

3 Sqns of Marauders and 1 of Havocs so only two types of bomber
3 Sqns of US fighters (RAF Hurricane Pools are to low)

Going to try a co ordinated raid for one lets see how it works

Why go and get him? Why not just put up a big cap and hunker down and/or keep all your strikes local to that hex? Seems to me that attacking him over his bases is playing into his hands since you lose pilots and he doesn't. Better to let him come to you and keep an airforce in being, which A) keeps him honest in that he has to cap his bases and B) costs him pilots since he has to fight over your bases.

Were I him, I'd love for you to impale yourself on his CAP. He gets free kills and clears the skies.

On the other hand, if he wants to take columbo, he *probably* has to bomb it first to disrupt your units. To do that, he needs to come to you.

Oh its in the Colombo hex I was trying a ground attack raid on his forces to try and force him to LRCAP Colombo.

Anyway today 221 RAF Group launched two raids one co ordinated one not - I lost about 5 Marausers in the un co ordinated attack.

But the good news he also tried ground attacking my garrison at Colombo and walked into a dense Flak trap.

I have over 300 AA guns inside the perimeter.... he lost 12 aircraft today 9 of them Lillies....

[:D][:D][:D]

I dont think air power will be able to disrupt my troops to much

70th British Div arrived today not sure whether or not to try and get that Div into Colombo or not. It will take a month to get close anyway.

I did everything I could same planes, same altitude, hq, supply, low fatigue, good leaders etc etc and lost 63 P39's for 4 oscars today as my sweep went into a base 2 hexes away piecemeal.

I give up I have no idea how air to air works in this game.

I am doing something wrong but I dont know what and these losses are unsustainable.

I thought stock was bad this is killing me.

Why sweep? He's going to have to come to you at columbo; why not just fly local CAP?

I don´t want to pour oil into the fire but perhaps that´s just how it works in AE and that´s the now so called "strike pack" airwar? I´m experiencing the same in at least 90% of the strikes and see the same my opponent is suffering from. Escorts split off the bombers all the time and strikes mostly go in in bits and pieces. Like in your example, all conditions are met in my PBEM too when I try to fly strikes, there´s only this one condition left I´ve mentioned to you in the pm but I seriously doubt that´s the reason. IMO air needs to be looked at, it´s a big leap from WITP but it has it´s flaws and those are by nothing better than the loops we suffered in WITP when looking at your 63 Airacobras lost to 4 Oscars. It´s ok to see strikes going wrong but it shouldn´t be the norm, but that´s exactly what is happenign in AE, strikes go wrong nearly everytime, no matter what you do. That´s definetely not reflecting how it worked in real life as it wouldn´t be that much of a problem for a big base to launch a couple of dozen fighters and send them out together to the same target 90 miles away, we´re not talking about a 4E bomber strike going 800 miles into Germany at night.

I can´t see what you´re doing wrong as you meet all the conditions we´re told all the time and so do I. Add in the huge effects of the bounce and voila and you get one of the loops as a result and this can be repeated on and on if you want to do so (you won´t have the fighters to do it anyway [;)]). Someone will pop in stating one incident with a 16:1 kill rate of Oscars vs. US fighters (will be hard to find one, if there even is one) and will say this could happen in real life. Just like my fights that are constantly happening at altitudes higher than 30.000ft could happen in real life, but not with the results I´m experiencing. Engagements between Oscars at 38.000ft and Allied fighters at 30-36.000ft in early 42 is a dream that wouldn´t work.

I think I may have figured it out.

At least I have a suspicion

I think I have been blinded by the A2A and air defence skill levels and am ignoring the general xp level to much

on averge my pilots are 40 - 50 general xp and 60 - 70 A2A

I think for offensive ops especially general xp needs to higher and may actually be more important than A2A because its general XP that determines co ordination etc

A2A alone is fine for CAP fighters but for strike aircraft it needs both skill types.

Now thats all supposition and guess work as I have no inside info on this one - but its the only variable that wasnt set perfectly

So I will take a look around and see what I can see.
