Playing SPWAW - IP to IP

Does anyone know if there are ports that need to be opened or how to setup an IP to IP game of SPWAW?

Krec would be the guy to talk to. He and a few other players have regular games.

All I had to do was tell the other player my IP address (as shown in SPWAW) and we were good to go. Ports? What's ports?

Nope. "Then" (when it worked) I had a different router/switch set up than "Now" (and it doesn't work now). No, I have not got it to work.

If your router/DSL box has a hardware firewall it may block the game. You can either configure this HW firewall to recognize mech.exe or alternatively turn it off altogether.
But remember that you absolutely need a firewall these days so make sure you have a software firewall up and running before disabling a hardware firewall!

Also the server must make sure he is not using NAT or people can not join the game. You can also disable NAT feature from your router/DSL box settings...

Disabling NAT is ok if you do not have your computer hooked on a private network. For example if you have two home computers connected to eachother through your router for file sharing you need NAT.

NAT is short for network address translation. It can usualy be turned on or off in the router settings. You will need to consult your router/DSL box manual on howto do that assuming your router has NAT.

Now I am not really an expert on what NAT is, but I do know that having it on will cause problems if you are the server. The people who join the game do not need to disable NAT. Also it is probably possible to conficure the router system so that NAT can be on while hosting but I am too lazy to learn how to do that.

Oh boy ... I'm about to get in trouble 'cause I hardly know what I'm talking about.

I frequently played over the Internet, but couldn't once I installed a wireless system. Now I disconnect the wireless router and plug the computer directly into the DSL modem. We can play that way. Of course, the host player has to tell the other guy what his IP is. We get that by using Roger Wilco.

(It has been a few years since my opponent and I have played Steel Panthers. We are presently playing Tiller's Napoleon at War. Still, a connection is a connection, and this should work for SPWAW as well.)

Routers seem to be the main culprit in all this......
