multiplayer error and no download of update?

recently bought this game and am having some problems:

1) I recently tried playing multiplayer for the first time, but every time I tried to select a game (every game), I received an error 34 message. what is this? also, there is an option to select single vs double challenges--what are these?

2) I cannot download patches via the game or on the website--I get an error in the game and nothing happens when I try to download from matrix' website.

Sorry you are having probelms. One thing that has happened recently is that users have hacked the game data files to sllow them to setup challenges with user scenarios. If you do not have the user scenarios they have hacked you will crash and this is causing 99% of all multiplayer issues and is very annoying for us. We're working on a way to address this but it will be a couple of weeks as we need to ensure it does not break existing games and works with the Rise of Rome expansion, coming soon.
 
If you are able to log in to the MP server you have the latest version - it would not allow you if you didn't. I dont know how Matrix files are stored but what exactly do you think you are missing?
