Question about AG ships?

Post by karmannkc »

While there is a fabulous thread that overviews what tenders do what for our bases. A thread that unfortunately got locked. But, I've noticed that some of my smaller ports seem to have a bonus amounts of Naval Support. And I thought that I recalled that the AG ships helped loading/unloading at ports, but I don't remember where I got that, I could have just been having another acid flashback. I'll give an example:

Lahaina - Port Size (4) and is currently being expanded to it's Maximum 5
(All land units are at full strength TOE)
102nd USN Base Force (100 Naval Support)
57th Coastal Artillery Regiment (0 Nav. Sup)
97th Coast AA Regiment (0 Nav. Sup)
2nd/298th Infantry Battalion (0 Nav. Sup)

I have only an AG in port
and the base info screen says I have 140 Naval Support.

Is that AG giving me bonus Naval Support or is something else at play here?

Oh will the naval support at the PacOceans HQ provide Naval support for surrounding bases?

Edit: You know what, I think you are correct it's a command bonus of the Naval HQ. Bravo I didn't realize that such a bonus existed, but looking at the SWPac HQ the surrounding bases seem to have magic Naval Support. Thanks for the info.

Correct. HQ with Naval Support Squads provide naval support to ports within their command radius. The apparent effect is:

(# Naval Support Squads) / (# Hexes from HQ + 1)

So a HQ with 86 Naval Support Squads will provide:
  • 86 naval support in its own hex
  • 43 naval support one hex away
  • 28 naval support two hexes away
  • 21 naval support three hexes away
  • 17 naval support four hexes away
  • 14 naval support five hexes away
  • etc.
I have been inputting my orders for the campaign game first turn since July 4, 2009. I'm getting close. In another month or two, I might be able to run the turn!

You come through again wwenger. I for one really appreciate your research and knowledge of the manual. It helps me focus on the stuff I totally missed when I read it.

Thanks

Wow, I did not know Naval HQs provide a bonus to ALL PORTS WITHIN RANGE! That is good to know. I should read the manual more closely.

I went carefully thru the manual and missed this info. What am I missing for sources? If correct, this changes my questions and hypothesis under thread = "Command HQ Support? - 2/21/2010 12:57:41 PM". This very discouraging to serious study attempts. How does one make decent strategy decisions when one does not even know the fundamental rules. I know that there are some proprietary "Grigsby Secrets", but too much recent AE stuff leaves too much as "Ouiji Board" guesses. I don't want to further irritate the AE developers to whom I am eternally greatful, but AE gamers are missing too much fundamental gaming strategy information. Several AE developers (some now departed) have stated that we don't need to know some information which seems to be fundamental to game strategy. Info provided by wwengr is truly useful, but what is his source and why can't I find much of this after much study? Is this all information reverting back to the original WITP?

It is not in the manual, folks, so don't sweat that you missed something. I had to go into the game and look at the Naval Support of all ports in range of a headquarters with Naval Support Squads.

A couple of limitations on my observations:
  • The only HQ types that I observed this for were Command HQ and Naval HQ (Pacific Fleet HQ and the Dutch Fleet HQ in the DEI at the start)
  • The location of the HQ's on the map only had ports in range out to five hexes, so I am only assuming that the trend continues beyond (Pacific Fleet HQ is a Command HQ with command radius of 9, but the most distant port in range is 5 hexes out)
I have been inputting my orders for the campaign game first turn since July 4, 2009. I'm getting close. In another month or two, I might be able to run the turn!
