not one heavy bomber was lost today, but we lost two PBYs again... still losing more PBYs than I get as replacements and other players are reporting the same... PBY loss rate is ridicoulos and can´t be sustained at the given replacement rate... but hey, who cares...

It's way too much micromanagement to keep your PBYs squadrons full but I never fly them when it rains and keep a 8 hex max until they're in their 70s. Look on the bright side, they weren't spotting anything anyway. [;)]

yeah, they crash AND don´t spot anything... [:D] it´s just depressing though to lose more than what you get as replacement though...

yet again, a crappy IJN PB is enough to drive the sub off while one and a halve dozen US DDs usually can´t protect my TFs... a pity... things will change over time...

the IJN can keep their subs close to my major ports succesfully attacking my shipping and my ASW TFs are nothing more than a nuissance... that´s true for the IJN ASW TFs and my subs too though...

I first was shocked to see 20 Zeroes on Cap but it soon turned out that they don´t have a chance against the B-17E and most were driven off with a couple of them being shot down... the base was plastered... the better the crews become the more frightening (for the Japanese) become the heavy bombers...

xAK Hermion, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

xAK Hermion is sighted by SS I-166
SS I-166 attacking on the surface

I first wanted to have a hr about no subs within 5 hexes of the off map entries but it was dropped as we thought TFs would not enter the map at the same spot all the time... well, didn´t take long for Rainer and me that TFs DO enter the map at the same spot all the time if they are heading to the same destination. Means he can place his sub right at this hex waiting for my convoys going to Karachi... mmm, have to reroute...

one hit and six near misses, the British prove to be the only competent in ASW... Panther run out of depth charges, this is just yet another example about the ammo loadouts of ships in AE being "critical"...

our bombers would do good damage but with the dispersed strikes and the small but very effective (against medium bombers) Zero Cap we just have to stop those attacks... losing 4 Marauders in one day is a disaster with the given replacement rates... the funny thing is that I noticed that you get something like three times more heavy bombers than you get medium bombers. From mid 43 to mid 44 there are only some Mitchells trickling in and that´s it. Is this really correct that there weren´t more than a dozen US medium bombers delivered to the Pacific per month for over a year in the middle of the war? This forces me to more or less only use heavy bombers... [&:] We start getting a hell a lot of Navy bombers in late 42 but the funny thing here is that there are no squadrons (not on the map and not coming as reinforcements) to put them in... Not just the Navy Liberators but also a lot of Venturas which I will probably never use as I get too many Liberators for the couple of squadrons anyway... Sounds strange...

now that was a disaster again... due to the fact that there was never real leaking Cap out of this hex (reported 140 fighters here) I thought there would be very few on Cap and so I decided to send in the Lightnings directly... oh well, the disaster starts right away after a couple of seconds when the Oscars BOUNCE the Lightnings that are coming in higher... not surprisingly we got our head handed then and we achieve what most people achieve with the Lightnings, a 1:1 against IJAAF fighters... great... with more than 100 Tojos coming online soon, we are totally on the losing end and I guess we´ll have to be lucky to get a total 1:1 in air losses until mid 43. [8|] The Tojo is nearly 380 mph fast, can reach nearly 37.000ft in no time, got a strong armament, a service rating of 1 and a better range than 95% of my fighters on the map and of course a far higher man rating at every altitude than my fighters, overall I would call the Tojo absolutely superior to anything I can field, except the Lightning which could be rated as equal at best. Will be fun, really... I guess it won´t be a problem for Rainer to further increase IJAAF fighter production to 200+ per month (Tojo and Oscars), I guess I won´t see Oscars much longer when the Tojo goes online as it´s clearly superior... when looking at the stats then I expect the Tojo to take out my Warhawks at a 4:1 rate on average... yeepie...

we´ve ordered a sweep of some Beaufighters and due to the fact that we got the bounce, the Zeroes were shredded... the bounce is giving you an insane advantage, the Zeroes were shot down at 4:0. Later turns will show you the opposite as Rainer immedietely set his Zeroes to max alt as a result of this engagement. AE air combat stays what it always has been, the one who gets higher wins... Sputnik warfare in the Pacific... off... you could quote Bergerud a couple of dozen times for example at which altitude aerial warfare happened and at which altitude the Japanese fighters got good performance but it doesn´t change the model anyway... it´s just off... this combat model seems to model zoom and boom, but not Allied zoom and boom but Japanese... at least that´s what the given stats and/or model is producing...

the day gets even better, the single escort depth charges our sub to death... nice performance for yet another single escort... the sub isn´t sunk though and tries to move to Perth with 80+ flt damage... seriously doubt that S-47 will make it though...

Post by castor troy »

If you compare the Tojo to the Allied fighter that will mostly equip my frontline squadrons until early 43 then you won´t be surprised about surely happening depressing engagements (for the Allied)... I can already see the Tojos shredding my Cap when doing Sputnik sweeps... Japanese fighters start the war absolutely superior to Allied fighters and stay superior until mid 43 when you can field more than just a couple of P-47 or Corsairs...

not much damage done to the airfield but still more than halve a dozen aircraft destroyed... the mines I´ve got there, useless, the subs, useless, the naval search, useless and therefore also all the bombers set to naval attack... useless... the enemy not just comes in unspotted, he moves out unspotted during the day too... some 4 dozen aircraft (radar equipped Hudson III and Catalinas) are on search (with archs covering the area where the enemy is moving) can´t spot anything... they just crash all the time and that´s it... another one of the Beauforts is destroyed and no replacements until 43... lol... forget about the British bomber force, only the Hurricanes are somewhat useful but that´s probably only true until the Tojo shows up, production start 6/42... thought it would be a good idea to use the high exp Beaufighter squadron to escort my bombers and that they would be enough to handle a handful of Zeroes... should have known better anyway... on the high alt sweep they shot down 5 Zeroes for no loss and on escort they get their head handed... 2 Beaus were shot down (halve a dozen more damaged) by the 4 Zeroes... we didn´t even damage a Zero, they weren´t even shot at... 5:0 and 0:2, that´s the difference between the Sputnik sweeps and being on escort... we´re coming in below 10.000ft and the Zeroes are patrolling at 30.000ft... yet another example that you should just stay as high as possible and all the myths on the forum are only grey theories, a mixture of what would be realistic and some dreams...[;)]

in this case, the best solution would be to send in the heavy bombers alone, this is what works best... as soon as the heavy bombers have cleared the path, you can send in the medium bombers too...

same is true for the IJN escorts of course... silly target routine... Argonaut fires it´s second salvo at one of the escorts in this TF instead of picking off one of the numerous freighters... wasn´t there a change in the upcoming patch regarding targetting? Or just a reduction of hit chances on escorts? The torps were MK10s and they have built in a 50% miss chance anyway... only my MK14s have a 90% hit chance as those are the MK14 homing versions...

thought Daly Waters would be the Zeros´ staging base but this airfield is empty... so where the hell are those Zeroes over Tennant Creek coming from? From Katherine??? Airfield level 2 and 9 or 10 hexes away from Tennant? Must be some major advantage for the Japanese then as I can´t see how they should perform those daily LRCAP mission at such a distance and not yet suffereng a SINGLE op loss when I once tried a 2 hex LRCAP out of Chittagong and ended up with halve a dozen op losses and 80+ fatigue immedietely after one day (posted with screenshots some pages ago)... I just don´t get it, but as Tennant Creek´s and Daly Waters´ airfields are empty there´s only Katherine´s left. Or some carriers are sitting off the coast doing LRCAP but this can´t be true...

first time that we achieved quite a good result in the defense of Akyab... Rainer still seems to think he could take the base, IMO his second attack long ago already showed that it´s senseless to keep on attacking here... and the fact that he moved in supplies via fast transport won´t make it easier to achieve something here I guess as this makes me think he´s got supply problem... why we get a negative multiplier from fatigue, while sitting in the base with full support and full supply and the Japanese don´t suffer from fatigue in this malaria hex while sitting outside the base in the jungle with definetely by far not enough support is beyond me... but hey...

that we again suffered for more dead as the defender sitting behind forts is nothing new anyway... that´s how it works...

it´s true, I can hardly believe it but it´s true... the LRCAP over Tennant Creek has been coming from Katherine all the time... wow, not just do the Japanese have super human on the ground that actually get kills in a 20:1 ratio over Allied soldiers (at least up to now in this campaign), they also not seem to suffer 3500 fatigue from doing daily LRCAP over something like 9 hexes (not suffering a single op loss so far it seems) while we accumulate 85+ fat from flying LRCAP for one day at two hexes... lol again... anyway, I couldn´t believe it and therefore it took some time until we finally bombed Katherine... it was worth it, the handful of Zeroes are no match for the experienced heavy bomber crews and we torch halve a dozen aircraft on the ground... there was quite substantial flak fire at the base, but we haven´t suffered a single loss... only the usual PBY was lost together with a Hudson doing a training flight... naval search stays the most dangerous task on the map... as it looks now, we will have run out of PBYs sometime in early 43 at this loss/replacement rate... the Cats are at 70% nav search now...

Alice Springs´ airfield is "only" a level 5 but built up further (hard task with a normal size of 4 though). Am not drowning in air HQs at the moment so I can´t spare one for this secondary front and the airfield here is pretty fast overstacked (administrative) with the given small squadron sizes of the Allied. Would like to have the sizes of Japanes daitais or sentais which are twice or even three times bigger than their Allied counterparts, therefore the Japanese got a big advantage when speaking about administrative overstacking. I can place 65 bombers at a level 5 airfield at best (5x13) while the Japanese could place 180 bombers (5x36) without administrative overstacking. This without any HQs. The only reason why Alice Springs doesn´t have more bombers is the overstacknig penalty. I´ve got a HQ with a range of 5 (AND even the SAME command as the base "Australia command") but it does not give it´s bonus to the airfield and I can only use five bomber squadrons out of Alice Springs. If I set a 6th squadron on attack, I immedietely get the *... [8|]

I completely ticked out when I saw this result... two reasons for it: a) the follow unit order is still bugged as hell (just like it has been in WITP). All my units should have moved out TODAY as they were all set to "follow unit" (a HQ) and the HQ moved out today. What did the rest of the Army do? All reverted to "defend". And b) the result of the nuclear bombardement of two medium gun rgt and two crappy mountain gun rgt is just complete BS. Some discussion on the forum was the result again and the solution for it then was:

quote bigJ62

In patch 3 beta during arty pahse each atking unit DOES NOT FIRE AT EVERY DEF UNIT. Prior to patch 3 beta this was true and was a bug but has now been fixed.

this is very good news, won´t help me at the moment though.

have set all my units to move out as fast as possible, Rainer said he will now stop the bombardment as my troops are only there due to the "follow unit" bug and the results are off anyway... that´s really fair, I told him he could keep up the bombardment though as we´re just using what we were given. As it stands now, I guess the Army will have marched out in the next wo days... otherwise a very quiet day...

25th of the month again, time for the sub statistics

starting 25th Jan:

Mk-14

total attacks 173
exploding hits 34 (20.99% of total hits)
duds 128 (79.01% of total hits)
misses 11 (6.36% of total attacks)

173 attacks in four months isn´t bad I guess. Dud rate is nearing the area you would expect with 80% dud chance for each torp. What stays absolutely amazing is the hit rate which is at over 93%. Considering how often the torps are fired at escorts you can figure out what this will mean for the IJN when the torps start getting better. MK-14 torps are really homing.

Mk-10

total attacks 24
exploding hits 11 (84.61% of total hits)
duds 2 (15.38% of total hits)
misses 11 (45.83% of total attacks)

not much change in the performance of our S-class subs, they stay mostly useless. Not many attacks, nearly halve of the miss (which is the actual joke), some duds...

53.3cm/45cm/21MkVIII

total attacks 55
exploding hits 17 (73.91% of total hits)
duds 6 (26.09% of total hits)
misses 22 (40 % of total attacks)

what can I say about Dutch and British subs? Not much change here, they totally suck too. 40% misses [8|] 26.09% duds [8|] both is a joke...

starting 25 Feb

IJN

total attacks 26
exploding hits 18 (94.73% of total hits)
duds 1 (5.26% of total hits)
misses 7 (26.92 % of total attacks)

26 attacks in three months isn´t really a lot and many of those attacks just happened lately when more and more subs showed up near my major bases near the US West Coast and Australia´s East coast. The subs operate more or less freely in those areas without having to fear my ASW forces. Don´t know if Rainer still tries to find my convoys, the IJN subs (as well as KB) have been useless when operating against my convoys due to not encountering them. The hit rate of the IJN subs is by far not as good as the USN fleet subs´ hit rate but their torps are definetely killers with nearly 95% of torps actually exploding. In total, the IJN subs are the most potent on the map at the moment and this won´t change until mid 43 I guess. Thank god the IJN subs lacked targets so far.

would really be cool if my DDs would be at least somewhat more potent against subs because as it stands now, the IJN would be dumb to move the subs away from really close to my major bases like San Francisco, LA or Sydney. The subs are more of a threat to the DDs than the other way around. Even if the DDs damage a sub at times, the kills in total are something like 1:1 due to the fact that a sub most times is only damaged (if even spotted) but a DD usually goes down immedietely after being hit by a torp and it doesn´t help being very close to a major base...

nice trap Rainer! As I´ve employed the tactic of picking off leaking Cap from Magwe and Meiktila seemed to be the only base where Magwe´s Cap leaked to in very small numbers lately, Rainer has put LRCAP over the base today (at least I guess it´s LRCAP and not leaking Cap). I was shocked when I got the message about 42 Oscars being on Cap. Then the fight began and it´s the usual clash just below 40.000ft that can be seen in AE all the time and also the outcome was the usual one. Due to us flying 1000ft higher than the Oscars we bounced them of course and that was the start of a massacre. 10:0 in kills for the Lightnings during the bounce. There were too many Oscars though to see the never ending bounce on our side and suddenly the Oscars began bouncing us. Result? 3:0 for the Oscars. So with the bounce on the Oscars´ side they reverted a 0:10 into a 3:0 in kills. Not bad eh? Yet another example what the bounce gives you. In this case quite an off example though as the Lightnings could just dive away from the Oscars but this isn´t modelled anyway. It stays the same though, get as high as possible to get the bounce at all cost and the one who gets it wins. Loss list says 15 Oscars (unsure) lost for 3 Lightnings (correct) today, giving us a 5:1 kill rate which is by FAR better to what people are reporting when they try to use the fighters of both sides like they were used in real life (means at reasonable alts). With such a result I can´t say the Lightning is a dog like reported by other people that achieve 1:1 kill rates at best. The only reason for my P-38 to perform that good is the fact that they can go 1000ft higher than any of my opponent´s fighters. A nice result, nevertheless I first thought we would be hit hard today as there were three times more IJAAF fighters than what I would have like to see. Seeing 27 Lightnings bouncing a dozen Oscars would be perfect... [;)] I would expect to damage/shoot down all of the enemy fighters for not losing a single Lightning A2A (or 1 lost A2A the worst case).

hmm... quite a heavy Cap over Finschhafen. My recon tells me that Lae (the only level 4 af in the area) is still totally trashed but we´ve still always encountered Cap in this area so I´m no trying to attack all those level 1 airfields around Lae. We started with Finschhafen, the airfield itselve was empty but we still met 14 fighter in the air again... where do those bastards come from? Lae? follow on strike and another fighter is shot down... kill rate A2A for my B-17E during this campaign must be somewhere between 2 to 3:1. Add in the destroyed ac on the ground and the B-17E is definetely my best fighter killer. Op losses stay low. Only naval search is causing massive losses, the Catalinas must have been quite useless trash aircraft...

unfortunetely I can´t really mass bombers in the area due to the new stacking limits. Really like those, otherwise 200 bombers here would whipe out the enemy. Like it is now, all my 4Es at this base are set to attack but only a few 2Es with all the Marauders there stood down. I would like to use my mediums only here but with the Zero threat I can not afford that. We just need the B-17 to do escort duty and therefore B-17s are flying with the Mitchells instead of the Marauders...

our bombardments become pretty useless again... would be cool if the next official patch would come out sooner than later as the bug of not taking replacements really hurts me in this PBEM. And the further we get, the more it hurts me of course as my units just don´t take any replacements after upgrading their devices. Some bugs are really a joke and are game killers if you reach a certain point... I´m drowning in my pool of squads and tanks, yet for example my armored units move around with a dozen tanks...[8|]

the enemy troops at Akyab are reported to be moving East and those bombardments only got one purpose, to slow the enemy movement. This should prevent the enemy from moving in "move" mode... guess it will take the IJA divs one and a halve months to reach the Japanese bases in Burma... and time is on my side, 5 divs and 1 bgd less to worry about for the next two months as they also need some rest... [:D] while the enemy´s attack on Cox´s Bazar was succesfully due to my div surrendering there (even though it had a nice retreat path and the other units retreated), the attack on Akyab was stalled. We couldn´t really hurt the enemy, other than disabling some 600 squads but the most important thing is the time we won. The enemy attack failed and all in all this operation will have taken him 3 to 4 months. We´re nearly in June and we´re only growing stronger... what we really lack is a strong airforce in India. The British bombers are mainly useless (Hudsons and Blenheims, with 6 Wellingtons per month) and I´ve got no US squadrons there yet. Some are coming in as reinforcements, some more are shipped there at the moment. But when those squadrons arrive there, we will still lack the bombers to fill them out and I don´t want to use up all my pool replacements as those are needed at other fronts that have higher priority. Leaves the British fighters, the Hurricanes do quite good against the Oscars (if not bounced en masse) and do even better against the Zeroes as the Hurricanes can go higher than the Zeroes and therefore we bounce them. Everything will change with the arrival of the Tojo which will start mass production in the next days. Intel tells us that over a hundred Tojos will leave the factories each month and there´s no doubt that the whole IJAAF will fly Tojos soon. The Tojo is superior to all Allied figthers except the Lightning. Means we are again highly outclassed until early 43 when a couple of Corsairs arrive each month. We won´t start having a real competitive fighter force before mid/late 43. Especially the backbone of our fighter squadrons until mid 43, the P-40, is totally outclassed by everything the IJAAF and IJNAF can field. We will only be able to counter this wiss massed 4E attacks but "massed" only works if we don´t get a lot of those "strike packs".
