No to both. Hyper jump is automatic for long distance travel and can't be turned off, and also no fighting can be done until they arrive at their destination.

well thats kinda messed up, becasue they can be at your outlying system and from what i have read, if they have enough fuel they can get to any system. so say your homeworld was 100 ly from the enemy armada. there is a massive fleet playing border patrol. but your homewold has suffered a massive attack and another could wipe it out. so this enemy armada flies on over to your homeworld. they are almost there ytou realise this then deploy your fleets to homeworld. but you dont know exacly where they are going. it could be homewold it could be elsewhere. but say they chose to invade. they could land troops on the plannet and blow up whast left of the orbitals. so ultimatly they land all troops destoy orbitals and then the allied fleet enters the system. so you lose but.. say you can stop hyperjump

alternate senario: your homewold has bunheavily damaged one more assult could blow it up ending your empire. the enemy armada deploys. the border patrol sees this happening the allied fleets move to intercept. they drop a subspace weapeon eliminating all hyper for a 5 ly raidus. the enemy fleet drops from hyper and your fleet begins the attack and anihalates the enemy. your homewold is safe. the enemy task force destoyed

You propably can scan icnoming forces.
If they are coming to you boders world you have less time to assign defend forces but if they plan to attack your core worlds you can amass massive defender force to kick their ass.
This is propably something like that.

I think you'll have to wait until the game is released and you can actually see it before you analyze it that deeply christian199 [:'(]

But there's lots of strategies, and long range scanners help you identify incoming attacks. Plus orbital defenses at your colonies, etc. Planning the deployment of your forces is all part of the fun, of course [:)]

I wouldn't worry so much, christian199. Given what's been said so far by elliotg, Matrix staff, and the beta-testers, it sounds like your scanners should be able to detect incoming fleets long before they can reach your home star system. Unless the enemy has researched some sort of super-duper, extremely high-tech cloaking device, it's a pretty safe bet we're going to spot any invading fleets long before they reach our core worlds.

EDIT: Heh. Never mind; looks like I got ninja'ed by elliot himself. [:'(]

Would it be reasonable to suggest that when asking questions, you write down the general theme of what you are going to ask in the title? It's just so people can know what the thread is about before opening it instead of seeing a bunch of threads all saying something like "question" or "interesting question" etc etc. [:(]
