Real time game play

Post by Chris21wen »

I don't normally play real time games but I am interested in this one but have one very important question.

Can you pause the game and still access menus, plan stuff etc. Many realtime games prevent you from doing this when you pause.

Yes, you can. The pause function was apparently build in so that you can do exactly that, in case that too many things happen at once. But this question has been answered a few times before.
If you want a really good overview over what is currently known about Distant Worlds, you might want to take a look at this Topic:

As the OP I don't normally play real time games. So having a proper pause feature is a must for me, and I am glad there is one in this very promising game. But I also have another pre-requisite: the pause key must be at my fingertips. Which means the Space Bar. Usually a pause on the space bar denotes a game that is meant to be paused often to think and act in peace, while a Pause on the Pause key means a clickfest that is not designed to be interrupted :). So, does DW have its Pause feature on the Space Bar, or is it at least possible to redefine it to the Space Bar, in the game Options menu or a text file?

Yes. This has been answered several times and will probably continue to be. :) The key word, search feature at the bottom of the forum helps too. :)

I read somewhere that the spacebar pauses the game along withon screen button and you can redefine keyboard hot keys. I read that you can set time/speed between a few speed. I read that you  have option settings to set auto-pauses that happen with certain defined events that that you might want to go to such as random events, production completions, research completions, battles, encounters, diplomatic meetings, etcetera.
When you open a menu, the game automatically pauses until you close the menu.
Also, the events and completions appear in a list that lets you jump to them.

Yes, pause is a feature in the game. Also when you open a menu, the game automatically pauses until you close the menu. [/blockquote]

EDIT: I almost forgot... the game also has a speed setting that goes up two notches and down two notches from normal. -2 -1 0 +1 +2, 0 being normal speed. This also affects the graphics handling. So there are four items that affect graphics handling:

1) Nebulae density (slider adjustment)
2) FPS
3) Zoom
4) Speed of game (5 settings)[/blockquote]

You can pause and resume the game with either the spacebar or pause key.

There are 5 game speeds: normal, 1/2 speed, 1/4 speed, 2x speed and 4x speed. You can use the + and - keys to increase/decrease the game speed.

This is not the kind of RTS that is a click-fest. It's completely pausable, you can slow it down, issue orders, etc. and you can set it to pop-up messages and pause whenever things happen. Seriously, I don't think any turn-based gamers will find this to be more than they can handle.
