July 5, 1942 The White House

Franklin is restless and can't sleep so he has a smoke and reads a report on the War in Europe.

On July 1
Rommel took 2K POWs from the El Alamein "box".
PQ-17 was spotted by U-boats.

On July 2
The Afrika Corps was down to 26 tanks, but still tried to break the British line of defense.
PQ-17 and QP-13 passed one another.
Jews from Berlin were sent to Theresienstadt.
Churchill defeated a motion of No Confidence in the House of Commons 475-25.

On July 3
The Germans and Italians in Egypt went onto the defensive due to exhaustion, lack of supplies and they only had 13 tanks left.
Sevastopol fell and the Germans took 97K Soviet POWs. The Germans and Romanians suffered 24K dead in the operation.

July 4
PQ-17 was attacked by Luftwaffe dive bombers and torpedo planes. The Germans had a false recon report of a BB present so they held their fleet in port. Admiral Pound believed the German fleet had sortied and ordered the convoy to disperse allowing the U-boats to feast on the unprotected merchantmen.

After considering these events he dozes off.

July 6, 1942 Darwin

Pete is again on his search. He's working around the harbor area and suddenly he hears the air raid warning being sounded. He thinks that it's a drill and pays it no mind. Shortly afterwards he hears the drone of aircraft engines approaching from the north, looks up and sees a gaggle of Zeros approaching! What he doesn't know is that 48 Zeros out of Kupang are sweeping Darwin's airfield. What the hell is going on? He can't believe this crap, how the hell am I ever going to find Flo with the Japs attacking?

In the meantime 190 miles north of Derby a Japanese transport TF has been spotted.

The first raid consisting of 4 X Demon, 8 X Martin 139 and 6 X Hudson go in on the TF and are met by a CAP of 8 X Zero. One Martin leaves trailing smoke and a Zero is damaged. More important than tha,t an AK is left burning after being hit by 2 bombs.

The Allied planes are not coordinating their attacks as 3 X Hudson appear and are met by a CAP of 14 X Zero. One of the Hudsons will never see home again and another limps towards home. They never got near the convoy.

Suddenly 3 X Demon, 5 X Martin and 6 X Hudson arrive on the scene and as the CAP is busy elsewhere they attack the convoy. They manage to hit an AK with a bomb, leaving it burning and another bomb strikes a MSW, which suffers heavy damage and is burning.

Yet another strike arrives consisting of 3 X Brewster 339D and 3 X Hudson and they are received by a CAP of 7 X Zero. The Allied planes run for home losing 2 of the fighters. The Japanese CAP suffers no casualties.

The Australian MSW Deloraine is 70 miles out of Broome when suddenly the ship spots Japanese carrier based planes boring in on her. She starts evasive manuevers to no avail as 14 X Zero and 12 X Val work her over scoring 2 bomb hits. The Deloraine has suffered heavy damage and is burning. She is suddenly jumped by a second wave of planes, 5 X Zero and 15 X Val who score 7 more bomb hits sending the hapless vessel to the bottom. Her crew fought gallantly, but the Japanese didn't even suffer a scratch.

The submarine Pike is attacked near Butung Island and luckily she suffers nothing more tha a violent shaking up.

The submarine Pompano attacks a barge near Belitung Island. They have no idea what happend to the barge as they are on a mining op and leave the area, heading for home.

On the other side of the world Tautog nears San Diego, expecting to make port tomorrow. She will then undergo extensive repairs.

Ed gets a message from Bill thanking him for the unexpected present. It goes on to say that Laffey's first kill is for Ed. Ed grins to himself and returns to the formation of today's report.

52 RCB is at Hsinyang
11 TankR is at Mishan
15 CB is at Jolo
39.9K troops are at Hailar
41 AAR is at Changchun
17 Army is sailing for Tulagi
8 AFCB is at Mandaly
2.5 K troops are at Ikitsuki
19.3K troops are at Shikka

Recon reports 1 LCU at Kai Island made up of 860/5/0
Wake is reported to have 6 LCUs of 10940/54/0

Bill arrives at Dave's gas station and immediately asks a boy there to fill up the gas tank. "Where's Dave," he asks the boy who just shrugs. "I'll leave the jeep here and head on up to the house he announces." A little while later he sees Sandy hanging clothes on the line to dry in the summer sun. When she spots him she drops everything and races to him. They embrace and kiss.

Post by tocaff »

July 7, 1942 Moscow

Stalin is pleased to hear some good news for a change and he's thumping some of his generals at Stakva on the back when they tell him that a division has moved into Sunwu, meeting no Japanese opposition. A staff officer then hands him the report based on recon flights over Japanese positions.

Heiho 5 LCUs 46800/570/29
Arshaan 1LCU 5200/56/0
Hailar 7 LCUs 26840/337/9
Tsitsihar 10 LCUs 20680/240/6
Chiamussu 5 LCUs 21880/267/3

Stalin thanks the officer and says that he wants to commend his officers for doing a good job, as they should do, and he leaves. The officers present let out a collective sigh and silenty hope for a change in fortunes before the war's events cost them their lives.

Stalin tells his aide that they'll let Washington wait a bit before replying to the American's demands.

Half way around the world FDR is reading a similar report.

4.9K troops are at Kitakyushu
24 D is at Chiamussu
9 AFCB is at Bankha
107 IJN BF is at Aomori
11 AvR is at Rangoon
2 AD is at Harbin
129 IJNAF BF is at Kendari
4K troops are at Osumi
130 IJA BF is enroute via convoy to Soerabaja
4.3K troops are at Pusan

Franklin asks if there are any subs in the area that might be able to intercept the troops convoy heading to Soerabaja and is told that assets are either engaged or being rerouted to cover Australia's northern coast. He thanks the officer that Ed sent over and asks him to tell Ed hello. He then asks an aide if there is any word from Moscow. When the negative reply is given he snorts and says, "Does Stalin think that we exist to serve only his purposes without there being something to be paid to the piper?"

An IJN TF built around CAs bombards Derby, destroying 4 planes and doing light damage to the airfield itself.

A small raid on Derby appears shortly after the fires from the naval bombardment were extinguished. 3 X Zero, 3 X Helen and 2 X Dinah do no damage even though they were unopposed.

52 miles NE of Derby an IJN TF is approached by 7 X Brewster 339D and 3 X Hudson only to be jumped by 23 X Zero. The Brewsters put up a valiant fight while the bombers try to flee. There are to many of the nimble Zeros and in minutes 3 Brewsters are destroyed as is a Hudson while another Hudson has been damaged. The Japanese suffer no loses and are developing a distain for the Allied fighters, but an admiration for the pilots risking their lives in those machines.

In China Chungking is swept by 104 X Zero and 1 X Babs shows up to snoop around. The Chinese are not caught sleeping and 28 brave men pilot their I-16cs to into the Japanese gaggle. There is a brief, but furious air battle and when the two sides disengage and head for their respective bases there will be fewer mouths to feed and planes to service. The Japanese have lost 3 planes and 1 was damaged, yet there will be many happy faces at the debriefing as the Chinese lost 22 planes.

Tautog has reached San Diego and is immediately being readied for the repairs to begin. The crew has been granted 2 weeks of leave and they will gladly head off to see friends and family.

Gunny will ship out on the next convoy leaving for Pearl Harbor as places on planes are at a premium.

Pete is at a loss as to what to do and yesterday's attack did nothing to instill confidence in him. As he goes around searching for Flo he wonders what he should do if the Japanese actually invade Australia. He tells himself that that would never happen, but the lingering thought is troubling.

The Pirates manage to bribe their way onto a plane headed for Auckland and Will decides that 2 bottles of Famous Grouse aren't a bad price to pay so they head off, still wondering about Pete. Will says that he'll check in with Darwin and Admiral Landy when they reach Auckland and then they'll also see about transport for the next leg of their journey. Secretly Will feels a sense of loss about Pete since he was responsible for putting the Pirates together on their scrubbed mission in the first place. The other men are still muted compared to a short time ago.

Phil lies in his bunk aboard the Benham and wonders how this mission will turn out. They are part of a TF that consists of
2 X CV
1 X BB
2 X CA
1 X CL
1 X CLAA
6 X DD
They are just over the horizon from a similar CVTF and it seems that they're hunters on this trip. He thinks of how shadowing convoys headed for various islands ties them down and what if the Japanese show up in force? He keeps thinking of the sight of the Big E sliding beneath the waves and never wants to see another ship like that again, unless it's Japanese. He can't sleep as his thoughts turn to the new BB, the North Carolina, a real nice looking ship with fangs. It would be nice to seve on a ship like that, he thinks as he finally nods off.

Bill and Sandy are enjoying eachother's company and he helps her with cleaning up after breakfast. "You know," he says, "You're a pretty good cook and housekeeper, for a pretty girl that is."

She laughs and immediately asks, "Hey Buster, what do you mean by that? Are you saying that I'm a good looking housekeeper?"

Phil is now afraid to put a foot in his mouth so he just smiles and is relieved when she laughs and throws some water on him. Later in the day they will walk to the station and give Dave a couple of sandwiches for lunch and then they'll head off for a walk. Phil is amazed at how beautiful northern California is and for a sailor he's loving the mountains. He wonders how Sandy will take the news of his pending duty taking him to who knows where for an unknown time period.

July 8, 1942 The White House

Ed waits patiently to be summoned into the Oval Office at the White House. When he finally gets the call he carries in his briefcase and smartly salutes FDR who waves him to a seat. "What've got for me Ed?"

"To start with I'll give you the bad news and then, well there is no good news today.
3.3K troops are in Hamamatsu
7 D is at Sapporo
37 CB is at Canton
55 D is at Myitkyina
10 Air F is at Kagoshima
11 AAR is at Osaka
16 A is at Rabul
25K troops are at Sapporo
5.1K troops are at Songkhia
19 ER is at Homan
3 NCB is at Nanning

Roti Island has be occupied by the Japanese.
A Japanese AK has hit a mine at Singapore proving yet again that the sub mining campaign is worth the effort, especially as long as the torpedos have problems.
Chungking was attacked by 104 X Zero with a Babs along to take a look around. They were opposed by 13 X I-16c of which 7 were downed to no loses for the Japanese.
Derby was attacked by 18 X Zero, 15 X Helen (1 damaged) and 2 X Dinah. The raid went unopposed but did no damage.
Chinese troops moved to 110 miles NW of Yunan only to run into prepared Japanese troops, who clobbered them.

I think that between Operations Constellation and Comet we will find ourselves in a vastly more secure situation, though if the Japanese strike hard enough at any given location they are strong enough to take it. The toops in Australia still haven't begun to move except for a couple of formations so it's safe to say that the Australian government is really willing to leave the northern coast exposed and plans on a counter thrust to take it back. Alaska is growing in strength and I think that we should accelerate the build up at Dutch Harbor, put troops on Attu and Kiska Islands and build small airfields to base patrol planes at those two places. The USN took some strength away from the area and I think that we should bolster the fleet at Anchorage to counter the Japanese thrust that I still expect to come before winter sets in. The Brits and Japanese have settled into defensive positions and are staring at eachother with the weather and terrain making any moves difficult, at best."

"Thanks Ed, you know that I value your insight and appreciate you taking the time to let me pick your brains. By the way how's that young lad, Phil is his name? Have arrangements been made for him to get command of a ship yet?"

Ed says, "Yes, he's going to be in command of a brand spanking new destroyer in about 5 to 6 weeks time, thanks to you."

"Good, good. We need smart and brave young men to see us through these troubled times. How about those new torpedo bombers for the carriers?" asks FDR.

"They are going to transfer the Devastators off and the Avengers take their place, all being done at Noumea save for the Wasp who will arrive there with Avengers on board," replies Ed.

After about 10 minutes of chatting about other small details FDR says that he'd like to share what's going in Europe.

On July 6 the British 8th Army made attacks on the Afrika Korps, but couldn't breach the German lines.
The German U-boat U-132 managed to sink 3 merchantmen in the Gulf of St Lawrence.
On the 7th we got word that Himmler OKed sterilization experiments at a concentration camp named Auschwitz.
Today, the 8th, Axis planes bombed Valetta, Malta's harbor.

I feel that this war will be made up of 4 distinct parts:
Phase 1 of Axis expansion with weak Allied resistance has ended.
Phase 2 of continued Axis expansion at a much slower pace that's heavily resisted is where we are now, roughly equal in strength.
Phase 3 will see the Allies go over to the offensive against an enemy of roughly equal strength.
Phase 4 will see the Axis forces being ground to dust before superior Allied power that will bring this war to a successful close.

I truly believe it when Winston and I say that victory will be ours."

With that Ed takes his leave.

Upon their arrival at Auckland Will tries and fails to get word about Pete. He does manage to get a message off to Admiral Landy informing him of the Pirate's progress on their journey home. Arranging transport is a difficult thing and he does manage to get them aboard a seaplane tender that will take them to an island where a PBY can then drop them off at Noumea. From Noumea he's been told that there will be penty of ships to choose from.

Pete is still searching when a women approaches him. "Are you the bloke who's been searching for Florence?" His heart skips a beat and he nods to the affirmative. "Sorry to tell you this deary, but she left Darwin days ago. I don't know where she went, but she's gone." Pete's heart sinks and he thanks the woman for her help after verifying that they are talking about the same person. Pete heads to the pub where he works plops down in a seat and asks for a pint. He's got to figure out what to do now that there's no sense in staying in Darwin. What I fool I've been is all he can think as his passion for Florence turns to thoughts of less than love. I've got to get to Brisbane he thinks.

Bill and Sandy are having a great time in one another's company. Today Bill has decided that he'll tell her about his new orders. "Ah, Sandy there's something I need to tell you. I've been given command of a ship and that means that after this visit I won't be able to return until I don't know when. The best I can do is to promise that I'll write to you whenever I have the chance and I hope you'll do the same."

Sandy looks at him and replies, "I kew that this would happen and all I can say is that you should do a good job to help win the war so that you can come back to me sooner rather than later. I'll wait for your return for as long as it takes since you've won my heart."

They embrace, kiss and continue holding eachother while staring into the other's eyes.

Cookie and Red have made plans, redone them, refined them and now have particular pieces of land that they want to buy in Hawaii. Whenever they can get to other islands in the chain they will so that they can look over the land. They are both determined to come out of this war alive and in a position to become rich. Lucky, on the other hand is happy to continue tearing down the pinups that Red is so fond of.

July 9, 1942

Ed's daily report contains bad news that is sure to upset the powers that be:

The Japanese have invaded Australia! Troops landed today and specifics are unknown as it is lightly defended. 3 X Martin bombers attacked the invasion fleet, that had managed to slip in under the noses of the defenders, scored no hits and all the planes were damaged by flak.

4.6K troops are at Hanoi
7 AAR is at Sendai
16 D is at Tulagi
5 AD is at Singapore
3 FFCB is at Anshan
114 IJNAF BF is at Wonsan
3.3K troops are at Anshan
10 Mortar B is at Chiamussu
53 HAAB is at Mutanchiang
4 AFCB is at Medan
2 AvR is at Mutanchiang

The submarine Cuttlefish continues her cruise off of the islands of Attu and Kiska.

Pete has been unable to find transport of any kind leaving Darwin and now he's hearing rumors that the Japanese have invaded Australia. He's feeling remorse about not having left when the Pirates did, but he knows that the only thing that will be of help now is keeping a level head. He decides that he'll have to report to the base where the Pirates were last posted to. Upon his arrival there he's given the old wait routine. It seems like a beehive as everybody is hurrying from here to there. Finally he's shown into an office and a naval officer sitting there calmly asks the question that Pete dreads. “Where the hell have you been? Don't you realize that there's a war on and that we all have to make sacrifices? You can't just go off to wherever.”

“I'm truly sorry for my actions and I want to make things right by rejoining my group,” say Pete.

“At the present time I'm afraid that that is quite impossible as your irreverent band known as the Pirates are somewhere between Brisbane and Pearl Harbor. I make no promises, but I will try to secure some transport for you out of Darwin. As you might have heard the Japanese have landed at Derby and we expect more landings at other places in the very near future. All transport is bring in fresh supplies and troops and what leaves is already loaded with priorities, of which you are not one. Report back to me tomorrow at 0700 and we will see where we stand as far as you are concerned. I will have a message sent to Pearl Harbor informing them that you have been found and your current status. That is all”

Well that went poorly thinks Pete as he leaves. He knows that he's in trouble, but the icy demeanor of the officer has told him just how deeply in trouble he is.

“I have to leave tomorrow morning” says Bill as he enjoys a hearty breakfast with Dave and Sandy. Now that that question has been answered the three of them continue eating in silence. After he's finished Dave excuses himself from the table and gets ready to head to the gas station. He asks Bill to walk with him.

“Bill, you know that Sandy has fallen head over heels for you and from what I can see you for her too. I want you to know that you have my heartfelt approval as I can see that your intentions towards my daughter are honorable. What I do want you to do is to take care of yourself and come back in one piece to us after kicking those treacherous bastards back to Japan where they belong.”

“I will” is the simple answer that Bill gives as the two men continue walking together in silence, each one of them lost in his own thoughts.

Red is stumped. He has no clue as to how or why Lucky keeps ripping down his pinups. The dog doesn't shred the pictures, just pulls them off the bulkhead and crumples them. What he doesn't know is that some of the crew picked up where the dog left off and as fast as Red can put up a new pinup they tear it down.

Another large convoy readies for departure from San Francisco.

The Pentagon is happily amazed that to date Operations Comet and Constellation have be untouched by the Japanese. Nobody wants to discuss this as they don't want to be the one to break the silence and then have something happen. They aren't superstitious men, but....

July 10, 1942 Washington DC

Ed Sends the daily brief on it's way and head off to meet Bill Donovan in Georgetown for some supper.
The report reads as follows:

3 AA is at Tokyo
17 CB is at Mutanchiang
5 A is at Tsitsihar
1 RAAR is at Kyoto
10 HGR is at Tsitsihar
15 AvR is at Johore Bahru
12 IB is at Changsha
48 NG is at Port Moresby
1 AD is at Wuhan

Upon reaching the restaurant Ed enters it and walks to the back where Donovan is waiting for him. H e asks, “Do you have any word on the Pirates?”

“They are somewhere between Auckland and Noumea as far as I know,” replies Ed. “Pete has turned up in Darwin and we'll have him on some sort of transport as soon as the Aussies get things sorted out there. With the invasion to say that things must be chaotic would be an understatement.”

“When those boys reach Pearl I want them shipped back to here a quick as possible as I have use for people with their talents.” With that the two men turn to idle chat and the food is brought to them.

The Palawan rides at anchor awaiting new orders. Cookie, Red and Lucky have managed to get the skipper's OK for them to take off for about 5 days. They are on one of their expeditions to an outlying island looking for suitable land to buy. They aren't experts, but the idea of a place for people to enjoy a vacation at a beach is the plan. Cookie is a shrewd operator who doesn't realize that post war America will be traveling by air, spurred by the research being done now on large aircraft with large payloads and great range. They have chartered a boat to take them to the island of Kauai.

The Japanese troops continue to come ashore at Derby and the first assault sees the defense collapse. Now the Japanese have their toehold with eyes cast elsewhere.

A Japanese TF is spotted 250 miles NE of Derby and it's attacked by 7 X Brewster 339D and 3 X Hudson. They are jumped by 30 X Zero and flee, dropping their bombs into the sea. The Brewsters do their best, but the sheer weight of numbers is to much for them, not to mention the superiority of the Zeros and their pilots. Two of the Hudsons go down in flames and the other limps homeward. The Brewsters manage to damage a Zero as they lose 3 planes and another is damaged.

The Dutch sub KXV suffers an attack 50 miles N of Derby, but escapes unharmed.

A large convoy bound for Pearl Harbor leaves San Francisco.

In Alaska construction of facilities at Anchorage has ceased and units will now be transported to other bases that need to be built up. Anchorage is now a 9 level for the airfield, port and fortifications.

Bill drives south being torn with the thought of not seeing Sandy and the excitement of his impending taking command of his own ship. He wonders if he still has his Lucky Bag Yearbook for his graduating Class of 1935 and how many of those guys have commands of their own by now. What he never suspects is that his classmate, Robert E Cushman, Jr, will become the Commandant of the Marine Corps in the future.

Stalin is grilling Stakva about war plans. “Where is the report on the east?” he asks.

A Captain timidly approaches him and hands him a document.

There is 1 LCU at Arahaan made up of 5520/51/0
At Hailar there are 7 LCUs comprised of 30200/314/8
Heiho contains 5 LCUs of 44640/551/25
There are 5 LCUs at Chiamussu of 21260/278/5

“So the Japanese are satisfied with the way things are based on the fact that they are not shifting any troops around. I want transport planes to be shifted to Khomsomalsk as soon as possible. We will use them to place troops at Okha and then will we watch for any response. I also want my diplomatic people in my office after lunch today concerning the sharing of information with Washington and if we should let them use any of our bases to bring the fight to the Japanese.”

Ed's daily report reads:

10K troops at Etorofo Jima
23 AAR is at Rangoon
3.3K troops are at Anshan
5 RFGB is at Homan
4.3K troops are at Sakashima
56 HAAB is at Changchun
112 IJA BF is at Yenen
14 A is at Rangoon
3 AD is at Rangoon
3.3K troops are at Hamamatsu
57 CB is at Maizuru

Recon flights report that Wake Island is garrisoned by 5 LCUs made up of approximately 10720/59/0.

IJN SS I-5 was attacked and driven off by ASW protecting a small convoy 20 miles N of Canton Island.

USN SS S-18 attempted to get into attack position but the convoy escorts detected and attacked her 50 miles N of Derby. S-18 suffered light systems damage and some flooding so she'll head to Brisbane for repairs.

Chungking was swept by 103 X Zero with a single Babs poking around. The Chinese CAP of 8 X I-16c met this threat and damaged a Zero in the battle while losing 5 planes.

290 miles N of Wyndham a Japanese TF is approached by 5 X Brewster 339D and 2 X Hudson only to be bounced by 28 X Zero. The mismatch results in a damaged Zero and no hits on the Japanese ships. The Allied planes suffer a lost Brewster and a downed Hudson.

Near Derby 3 X Martin hit a Japanese DD with a single bomb causing fires to be seen. The planes return to base unmolested.

Another Japanese TF is attacked by 3 X Brewster 339 D and 3 X Hudson. They score no hits and are attacked by 12 X Zero as they head back to base. All of the Brewsters are splashed and 2 Hudsons are damaged while a lone Zero is damaged.

Other air attacks in the Derby area score nothing, but are unopposed so all planes return to base safely.

Gunny is exercising on the deck of a freighter that is part of a large convoy bound for Pearl Harbor. He doesn't know what's ahead for him, but he knows that staying in fighting condition is a must for a Marine at war.

The Pirates should arrive at Norfolk Island tomorrow and then from there they will fly out to Noumea on a PBY as soon as possible.

Pete, on the other hand has no immediate prospects for travel as he has been told to wait and remain on base.

Bill is disappointed to discover that he's missed Gunny by a day or so and wonders if their paths will cross again. He learns of the Pirates status and requests any information concerning Laffey's compliment of officers.

Sandy and Dave discuss her wanting to do something to help the war effort and nothing concrete is decided for now. She is torn between knowing that her father needs her around and her country needs help also.

In Pittsburgh Elaine has announced to her family that maybe working at a USO club isn't enough and that she intends to do more. What more is she doesn't say and her parents aren't happy about her intentions.

“Wow! This place is beautiful!” exclaims Red. “We should really take a close look around this island. I think that this is heaven on earth.”

Red nods in agreement and mentions that they also need to keep and eye on Lucky, who is racing around, sniffing everything and marking it as his own territory. This place is beautiful, thinks Red.

July 12, 1942 The White House

“The IJN bombarded Wyndham doing light damage and many Allied air attacks in the Deby and Wyndham areas accomplished nothing other than downed aircraft.” Ed looks up at FDR, sighs and continues.
"The defense of the Sian area is collapsing back into the city itself under heavy Japanese pressure. The Chinese say that they are sending in additional troops and are claiming that they will not lose the city. I would like to point out that as much as losing Sian would hurt the Chinese we shouldn't lose the fact that all hinges on Chungking and that maybe there is a way of pointing this out to our Allies. I smell a rat here and I know that I'm going out on a limb, but according to some Army pals of mine the main axis of Japanese attack will hit Chungking and it's possible that Sian is just a very strong feint.” Ed absently hands the brief to one of FDR's aides. It adds the following information:

31 AAR is at Sapporo
22 ER is at Mishan
35.8K troops are located at Changchun
11 TankR is at Mishan
10 TankR is at Mutanchiang
17 CB is at Mutanchiang
4.3K troops are at Pusan
88K troops are at Pescadores
1.8K troops are at Haiphong
35 CB is at Tsitsihat

“Thanks for the input Ed,” says FDR. “If you happen to see Bill Donovan in the next couple of days please tell him to take care of those fellows known as the Pirates.”

Ed leaves the White House and decides that on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon he'll take a walk around the Mall.

Helens bombed Akyab for the second consecutive day doing light damage to a vacant Allied base.

Submarine S-27 has managed to put a torpedo into a Japanese AP about 80 miles N of Derby.

112 X Zero swept Chungking and were met by 6 X I-16c. In the battle 3 of the Chinese planes were shot down and the rest fled for their base. On the way to the base they spot a Babs and pounce on it, damaging the Japanese plane.

Red and Cookie have fallen in love with the Island of Kauai and have decided to invest all of their money buy as much property as they can. As they hike around an Army patrol stops them at gunpoint. They explain who they are and what they're doing when all of a sudden Lucky appears and at a dead run leaps onto one of the soldiers, knocking him to the ground. Lucky's is very excited to see the strangers and is licking the downed man's face. After things calm down a bit the soldiers are full of questions about the dog as they've never seen a gray dog before. Red, Cookie and Lucky hitch a ride with the soldiers back to their post and join them for some chow. The men share their food and conversation and decide that a ride in the morning wouldn't be an imposition so that our two wanderers can catch their boat ride back to Oahu.

Gunny is keeping a strict schedule of workouts to maintain his conditioning. Life aboard a ship is not the life for him, he thinks, as it's to confining.

Pete is told that all able bodied men are needed to help with construction of defensive positions so off he goes. When the truck reaches it's destination Pete jumps off of it and is handed a shovel and told to start filling sandbags.

The Benham maintains her station as the TF continues on it's southerly heading. Tomorrow they will come to a new course on a SW heading. With each passing hour they head closer and closer to areas considered to be under Japanese control. The TF will attempt to avoid being spotted and stay out of range of LBA. Phil has heard the crew and their rumors as to where they're going and for what. He knows that for now they are nothing more that shepherds guarding the flock.

July 13, 1942 Pearl Harbor

Cdr Wallace has left his Exec to oversee the loading of Mk10 mines while he goes to HQs to get Tarpon's sailing orders. Upon his return to Tarpon he heads to his cabin, a misnomer if there ever was one, that seems no bigger than a shoebox as patrols grind on. He opens the orders and sees that they will lay the mines in Tulagi's harbor and then make for Brisbane, which until further notice will be Tarpon's new home. Later that day after everything is loaded aboard and properly stowed Tarpon leaves Pearl Harbor.

Ed's daily brief reads as follows:
65 CB is at Kagoshima
3 FFCB is at Anshan
Shanghai SNLF is at Kweilin
1.8K troops are at Pusan
16 AAR is at Manila
3 IB is at Homan

The Australians and Dutch keep up their air raids on Japanese shipping off of the coast of Australia, but score no hits.

The Japanese commenced landings at Wyndham against light opposition and it's expected that the first assault will carry the day for the invaders.

A coast watcher has reported that a Japanese AK has hit a mine and is burning at Rabaul.

The Japanese bomb a vacant Akyab again and cause no damage.

In the meantime Pete's body is one mass of sore muscles that he forgot that he even had. Filling sandbags all day long is not a task for a flier, he thinks. He continues with the mind numbing task as he daydreams and he wonders when or if he'll be able to get out of Darwin. He's heard the rumors that Wyndham has fallen to the Japanese and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Darwin is squarely in the sights for the Japanese.

With nothing to do for about 3 more weeks Bill writes to Sandy and wanders around the San Francisco area.

Red and Cookie thank the soldiers for the ride and they call Lucky aboard the boat that will take them back to Oahu. The two of them have decided that as soon as possible they will return to The Bishop National Bank and see how much of a credit line they can obtain to buy land with. Their account there has steadily grown as they put almost all of their money into the bank.

Elaine's parents have convinced the girl that she is better off working at the USO club because the boys in the USAAC are away from home with uncertain futures and if she can cheer some of them up by dancing and talking with them it's an important service she'll be giving to her country.

The Pirates have managed to obtain space aboard a PBY bound for Noumea and as the plane lumbers into the air after bouncing across the water Will thinks back to the fateful mission that saw them get shot down. He tries to put those thoughts out of his head, but can't. The rest of the Pirates are trying to get as comfortable as possible for the long flight.

July 14, 1942 The White House

FDR reads the report that Ed has sent over and as he does an occasional grunt can be heard as General Marshall and Secretary of War Stimson sit silently looking at their copies.

2 Fleet is at Balikpapan
22 Air Flot is at Singapore
20 Army is at Heiho
25 D is at Harbin
6.7K troops are at Iwo Jima
2.5K troops are at Ikitsuki
2 RAAR is at Tokyo
SEFH is at Rabaul
135 IJNAF BF is at Tokyo
3 Army is at Mukden
3 FFCB is at Anshan

The landings at Wyndham continued and the first Japanese assault took it. The 109 RAN BF is retreating towards Darwin. Australian planes hit an unloading convoy and hit a PG (light damage), an MSW (on fire/heavy damage) and a DD (fires).

More ineffectual Allied LBA attacks on Japanese shipping took place in northern Australia. In return for scoring no hits these planes were meat for the roaming Zeros.

104 X Zero filled the skies over Chungking and they were met by 4 X I-16c, of which 3 never returned to base. A lone Babs was again detected snooping around.

Ed has added as a footnote that so far the IJN seems to be using the KB as a raiding force, which he finds curious as it's much more formidable that anything the Allies can muster at the moment. He goes on to point out that if this is true why haven't there been any attempts on convoys since the great debacle off of the Australian coast. The only reason Ed can put forth is that the entire KB must be in use as cover for the Australian invasions. It would therefore be prudent to advise the RN to keep their carriers screening the Brisbane area, for now.

“What the hell can we do to insure that the Japanese don't get out of their foothold and take all of Australia? I want troops sent there and fast,” says FDR.

“We already have issued orders and our major problem is the lack of shipping available to carry the troops. This is compounded by the urgency and the great distances involved,” replies Stimson.

Marshall adds, "As you have already expressed our forces are going to concentrate on pushing the invaders out of Australia. Plans are already to be put into effect, as soon as the force levels come up."

The Pirates are lazing around Noumea and Ben remarks to nobody in particular that, “This is a sleepy place to see out the war. You could really work on your tan too.”

Will shakes his head and replies that, “Pretty soon this place will become a beehive of activity. It'll be crawling with men and machines. Why I'll bet you $20 that by the time that we leave here you won't recognize the place.” Ben passes on the bet.

The Benham remains on station protecting the CVs from the submarine threat that grows with each passing mile. Phil paces the bridge periodically asking if there are any sonar contacts. He also reminds the lookouts to remain sharp. The radar has broken down again and there are men trying to get it up and running.

Red and Cookie are nervously sitting at a loan officer's desk. Although they have a standing credit line they have asked for it to be expanded to a larger amount of money. Upon the bank official's return they are told that the matter will be reviewed by the bank's board at their next meeting, scheduled for the 30th. They are told that they should return on the 31st for an answer. Cookie says that they will unless the ship sails, “After all there is a war on,” he remarks. The men shake hands and Cookie and Red head back to the ship.

July 15, 1942 Off the coast of Darwin

The submarine S-44 has been stalking a Japanese convoy for 5 hours and has finally managed to get into a position to attack it. They are approximately 100 miles NW of Darwin. Her skipper is scanning the surface in a 360 degree arc he sees that the only target that they have a good firing solution for is an IJN DD. The exec takes a look and then checks against the silhouette cards that they have. It's a Fubuki and they fire two torpedoes at her. They immediately dive the boat and alter course so that the Japanese hopefully won't find them by simply running down the torpedoes reverse course. The skipper and exec watch the clock and know that now is the time if they are to hit their target. Suddenly they hear an explosion that tells them that their target has suffered a hit. They come up a half hour later and see that the DD is on fire and appears to have suffered heavy damage. Suddenly the sonar man calls out that there are high speed screws approaching them. Without even trying to see the order is given to lower the periscope, dive deep and alter course. The Japanese start the attack immediately and rattle S-44 mightily. She suffers some light systems damage from the attack which lasts for over an hour. Finally they manage to elude their attackers and the men all breathe a sign of relief.

Closer in to Darwin PT boats attack an IJN TF in three waves. The first attack scores no hits and a PT is sunk. The second attack suffers the same results, while the third never even gets close and sees a boat get sunk.

Ed's report for the day has been submitted and includes:
6.9K troops are at Inch'on
3 AAR is at Tokyo
4 AAR is at Toyama
23 D is at Heiho
3 AD is at Rangoon
37.1K troops are at Chiamussu
12.5K troops are at Mukden
31 HAAB is at Aomori
3.9K troops are at Nagato
31 TCB is at Changchun
4 TankR is at Port Moresby
25K troops are at Sapporo
2 AAR is at Tokyo

Pete is hearing all sorts of rumors about Japanese landings happening almost everywhere. He hopes that they are just that, rumors but he has a gut feeling that getting out of Darwin will mean slipping past the Japanese. Well tight spots are nothing new to me, he thinks and continues bagging sand.

Benham prosecutes another false contact and the radar set is functioning just fine the officers are told.

Bill is in the company of several naval officers that are in the same boat as he is, waiting for their assignments or transport. They talk of many things ranging from new types of planes for the carriers, to faulty torpedoes. The one thing that they all agree on is the need to get into the fight.

In China the city of Sian is bracing for a battle as IJA troops are advancing towards it.

July 16, 1942 The White House

“The European war is going poorly with the Russians on the ropes,” says FDR. “According to reports the first 2 ships of PQ-17 entered Archangel on the 10th and as of the 15th it's final loses were 24 ships sunk. That was about 141,721 tons of shipping, gone. The cargo lost was about 210 planes, 430 tanks, 3350 trucks and 99,316 tons of cargo. We can't afford such loses so I'm going to use this to tighten the screws on Stalin about sharing information and basing rights.” FDR reads on and says, “It says here that on the 12th Army Group North took 30K prisoners in the Volkhov pocket and on the 15th the Germans took Boguchar and Millerovo, less than 200 miles from Stalingrad. I would think that our Soviet allies should be willing to soften their position, given their weakened bargaining position.” The President scans through more of the report and says, “ The Nazis have started to deport Dutch Jews to Auschwitz on the 14th. These are sick people that we're at war with and for the sake of humanity we must be victorious. Now where is that report from Admiral Landy about our Pacific War?” He reads silently to himself.
45 HAAB is at Bangkok
51 AAR is at Bangkok
7 ER is at Mutachiang
14 Mortar B is at Palembang
1.2K troops are at Rahaeng
Nanking NG is at Nanking
31 HAAB is at Aomori
1 RAAR is at Kyoto
67 CB is at Toyama
12 AVR is at Singapore
4 RAAR is at Kagoshima
“What I wouldn't give for some good news for a change,” sighs FDR as he puts the papers down.

Near Darwin the PT boats are again active and in a series of actions against Japanese shipping nothing is accomplished, though no boats are lost.

The air war in the Darwin area continues as the attacks on Japanese ships intensifies. The Beauforts prove to be ineffectual, but the Hudson score hits on 2 AP, one of which is burning.

Pete is getting nervous because he doesn't want to get stuck her and become a prisoner of the Japanese. He's heard about how horrible treatment of prisoners is and shudders at the thought. He's not a coward, but he's not a hero either.

In China the Japanese have built up a force of 94.2K troops at Sian. The Chinese have 161.4K troops of their own in the area and a large battle looms.

About 25 miles north of Bulla the 22 DAF BF surrenders to IJA troops. They are herded towards a point where they will be boarded onto a ship to be sent to Burma to work on a railroad.

Gunny jogs around the ship as he's trying to kill the boredom of the long voyage to Pearl.

Bill goes out with other naval officers for food, drink and some sightseeing in San Francisco. His mind keep drifting to thoughts of Sandy and his command to be the USS Laffey.

Convoys continue to sail unobstructed to their destinations delivering the goods of war in an effort to secure the lines of communication between the USA, New Zealand and Australia.

The USN is busy protecting these convoys. It's an impossible mission as the area to be covered is huge and to spread one's force to thin is inviting doom.

July 17, 1942 The Pentagon

Bill Donovan is sitting across from Ed at Ed's desk looking at the report that is heading for the White House. It reads:

81K troops are at Camranh Bay
67 CB is at Toyama
40 CB is at Changchun
N China Army is at Sian
18 RCAR is at Toyama
16 AAR is at Manila
53 D is at Kobe
12 NCB is at Osaka
3.9K troops are at Nagato

An IJN PG has hit 2 mines and is burning at Palau.

“You might want to add that the Japanese are ashore at Darwin,” Bill remarks in a very casual way.

“What the hell! How did you, never mind.” says Ed.

The two men head off together after an orderly picks up the amended report.

Pete is busily at his back breaking job of shoveling sand into bags when Japanese planes make an appearance not far from where he is and they bomb various installations doing moderate damage. “I can't believe that this is happening!” shouts Pete to himself.

“There, there laddie,” says an Australian Army private, “Soon enough you can stop fighting the war with your shovel and pick up a rifle instead.”

“Great, just what I always wanted to be, an Aussie soldier,” Pete replies glumly.

200 miles north of Darwin submarine S-28 is on patrol when suddenly it's day is shattered by a Japanese ASW attack. They Japanese persist for hours trying to seal the fate of S-28, but today she leads a charmed life and her skipper makes all of the right calls. Gradually they slip away with nothing more than rattled nerves. Things are not good when the hunter is the hunted.

The coastal guns protecting Darwin roar as the IJN lands troops. There is a price to be paid for such an audacious attack and the Japanese suffer heavy casualties among their troops. The IJN for it's part has 4 DDs hit repeatedly, 3 of which are burning, two APs are also hit.

Allied subs and planes make many attacks on the Japanese shipping, but fail to score any hits. The USN subs continue to be plagued by faulty torpedoes.

About 28 miles north of Bulla the Molukken GB surrenders to their Japanese pursuers as they are out of supplies and Japanese forces all but surround them. The Japanese troops are not a forgiving lot as they don't appreciate the chase through horrible terrain and the loses they suffered at the hands of these cowardly men who call themselves soldiers.

Bill finds all of the sightseeing around the San Francisco area tedious as he wants to assume his command already. He also is missing Sandy and often finds himself wondering what she is doing at that moment. Every evening he writes another letter to her and the following morning posts it.

The Pirates board an empty AK that is sailing to the east. She's riding high in the water as she's empty.

July 18, 1942 The Pentagon

“Yes sir. I realize that, but I can only supply you with what I get here. Yes, sir. Uh huh. OK. How about our Soviet friends? Nothing? Really? I can't say that I'm surprised. Yes, the pressure on them is great and I too expect that sooner than later they will come around. OK, it's on it's way within 10 minutes.” Ed hangs up the phone and summons an orderly who sees that the report is on it's way. It reads as follows:

Burma Area Army is at Mandalay
5.9K troops are at Takamatsu
57K troops are at Tsitsihar
1 GMB is at Tokyo
5 AAR is at Niigata
1 RAAR is at Kyoto
12 CB is at Mutanchiang
5K troops are at Songhia

Submarine activity in the Darwin area has reaped no rewards and Allied air attacks have proven to be futile to this point too.

It is strongly suggested that the USN speedily correct the problem with torpedoes.

Pete hasn't held a rifle in his hands since he was a boy squirrel hunting. He now holds a Lee Enfield Model 1917 in his hands and is being told that from now on it will be with him always. He and other men who were working on building defensive positions are now infantry. Some of them have seen service in the last war and comment on how back then things were done properly and the damned Japanese were allies of the empire.

“You will obey your sergeant's orders at all times if you want to live. He is your mother and he wants to keep you alive as much as he wants to kill the enemy.” The Australian officer drones on for another 5 minutes and then leaves. The sergeant tells the men to relax and that they will be assigned to guarding rear area installations. Pete is in a state of disbelief that things have gotten to this point.

At Darwin the Japanese troops continue to come ashore under heavy fire and as a result they suffer heavy losses. An air raid made up of 9 X Zero, 35 X Val and 46 X Kate is met by 12 X Kittyhawk and a furious battle ensues. There are planes swirling everywhere and some of them trail smoke or fall from the skies. As suddenly as it occurred the battle is over and the skies are empty once more. The Japanese lost 2 Kates and had another 3 damaged and 7 of the Vals have been damaged also. The Kittyhawks number 11 when they return to base and the raid itself has done moderate damage to the facilities targeted.

The submarine Pompano has been stalking a Japanese convoy for 3 hours and now launches torpedoes at the ships in it. One of the fish slams into an AK and explodes causing fires to be seen. Pompano slips away undetected to reload her tubes and resume hunting. Her skipper remarks to the men in the control room that they are in a target rich environment and must stay on their toes.

Another Japanese convoy is spotted by Beauforts who immediately attack it. They manage to hit a DD with a torpedo reporting later that it was on fire and heavily damaged. An AP was also reportedly hit, causing it heavy damage.

Back at Pearl Harbor the Palawan starts loading supplies for a convoy that will depart as soon as all ships are ready. The destination is Midway Island. This will mean that Red and Cookie must contact the bank and tell the loan officer that they will return to the bank as soon as possible.

All convoys continue operations unmolested by the enemy and operation planners can't believe their good luck. War plans hinge on getting bases up and running which requires that units and supplies reach them and so far so good. No, better than good it's great that there have been no loses.

In northern California Dave and Sandy are eating dinner and Sandy tells Dave about her getting another letter from Bill.

“You're really stuck on him, aren't you?” Dave asks. “I heartily approve as that young man is going places in this life and after this war is over he'll be a success at whatever he decides to do.”

“Dad, right now I just wish he was here with us, safe and sound.”

July 19, 1942 Darwin

The Japanese troops continue to come ashore and they gradually expand their beachhead. The Australian coastal guns continue their deadly fire and Japanese troops loses today are moderate. An IJN bombardment TF does moderate damage to the base facilities and the shore guns hit a DD and an AS.

S-18 is on patrol and detects a Japanese convoy and tries to get into a position to attack it. Finally a night attack is made about 10 miles NE of Darwin. The convoy appears to be comprised of 6 ships and a lone DD as an escort. The sub makes it attack run on the surface and fires her fish at an AP in the port column of the convoy. There are 2 explosions in rapid succession indicating that 2 torpedoes have found their prey and detonated. The hapless AP has suffered heavy damage and fires are raging out of control. The DD fires on the sub as soon as she is detected and scores a shell hit on the S-18 who suffers light systems damage and moderate flooding. The sub manages to avoid any further attacks and is well on her way to Brisbane by morning with her damage control parties working furiously to stop the water from coming into the boat. By the afternoon the pumps are winning the battle against the sea, though diving is still out of the question and they must put more distance between themselves and the battle zone before they can feel reasonably safe.

A large convoy is loading in San Francisco while another one that's empty approaches the port. One will leave and another arrive as men and material flow to far flung bases.

Another large convoy carrying fuel and combat formations will reach Pearl Harbor soon.

As the last of Operation Constellation unfolds troops, supplies and fuel pour ashore at Noumea while another convoy is about 400 miles east of Suva, eastbound for Brisbane and Luganville. Yet another convoy bound for Noumea and Brisbane is about 300 miles NW of Canton Island.

In Washington Ed hands his report to FDR who gives it a fast glance.

8D is at Tsitsihar
20 RCB is at Mandalay
113 IJA BF is at Nanking
12 HAAB is at Nagoya
26K troops are at Seoul
4.9K troops are at Kitakyushu
35 HAAB is at Rangoon

“Well Ed it appears that our effort to build up LITS is bearing fruit. Except for minor islands that are easy pickings worth very little the easy advances made by the Japanese are coming to an end. Once we get more troops into Australia an offensive will be mounted and I expect that we will then seize the initiative in this war.” FDR offers Ed a drink and Ed clears his throat. “Yes, you'd like to say something?” asks FDR.

“Sir, I believe that even with our bases being garrisoned and rapidly built up they are still going to be vulnerable to attack as long as the IJN has it's carrier strike force intact. We will have to bring it to battle and I would like this to happen after we expand the size of the fighter groups on board the carriers. New ships will be arriving in mid September that should also make a difference in a fight. I want to advise you that we should exercise caution as the country's morale will suffer greatly if we lose a major battle at this point of the war.”

“Ed, I agree with those thoughts. We do need to start getting aggressive though and if we do get the short end of the stick in a fight at least the other guys will know that they can't run roughshod over us anymore. The country's morale might suffer temporarily but it's resolve to win this war will not waver.” With that FDR hands Ed his drink and the two men silently ponder many issues.

Bill is getting antsy as this waiting for his getting the ship command that he's dreamed of seems to never get closer. He stops in operations at the base to see if there's anything for him to do while his wait continues. The answer is the same as always so he heads off to the Officers Club.

Cookie manages to get time to go to the bank where he informs the loan officer that he and Red will be otherwise occupied and that they aren't sure when they will be able to return. The bank officer smiles and tells Cookie not to worry about it as the bank won't be going anywhere.

Pete and about 40 other men are transported to a location that they are charged with defending. They are told that they will be issued a radio, a mortar, a machine gun and ammunition before the day is over. This is starting to shape up as something Pete has never imagined for himself. The men break up into small groups and take their positions. A short while later food is issued to them, a truck arrives with ammo and a radio but nothing else. “Don't get your hopes up gents,” says a man who served in the army years ago. “They will tell you one thing and do another. We are about as low as you can get on the pecking order so if they have anything to spare it'll go to regular army units first. That rifle that you have will probably be all you'll get to fight with.” A comforting thought thinks Pete, surely there will be reinforcements arriving to help repel the invaders.

RE: Darwin Invaded

July 20, 1942 In the Air Over Derby

Australian planes roar in on the Japanese occupiers of Derby and are met by 11 Zeros. The raid consists of 1 X Falcon, 3 X Martin and 2 X Beaufort. A Martin goes down and another is damaged while a Beaufort is lost in return for doing light damage to their target. The Zeros suffer a damaged plane in the encounter and they don't pursue the retreating Allied planes.

The Japanese continue to land troops at Darwin, suffering moderate loses. The Australian coastal guns continue to roar in disapproval of the invasion and the gunners hit an AP a couple of times causing her to burn. The Japanese and Australians are now exchanging artillery barrages.

Pete has been shown how to strip and clean his rifle and he actually has ammo for it too. “How long is this supposed to last? Do we get to practice at all?” he asks.

“Those 50 rounds are probably all you're going to get laddie,” answers one of the other men in the group. “Don't be wasting any of it as soon enough there will be live targets to use it on.”

“Swell,” mutters Pete to himself and he peers down the road at a dust column that is slowly approaching them. He wonders what is on the way, when will help arrive and how did he ever manage to land himself in this mess.

Major General Herring, the commander of the 6th Australian Infantry Division, has gotten orders to move to Darwin 240 miles away. He wonders if his unit will be to little to late or if his lads can really make a difference. Time will tell he thinks as orders are issued and he lets everyone know that tomorrow they will be on the march.

The submarine Cuttlefish continues her patrol off of Attu and Kiska searching for an anticipated visit from the Japanese.

The carrier Wasp is a day out of Pearl Harbor and the Palawan will be leaving for Midway as she arrives.

Back in Washington Ed has just finished today's report.

SAA is in Singapore
1 RAAR is at Kyoto
51 AAR is on an AP bound for Bangkok
1.8K troops are at Hakodate
23 TR is at Chiamussu
35 CB is at Tsitsihar
13 MB is at Rabaul
41 AAR is at Changchun
3 NCB is at Nanning
28 D is at Tsitsihar
53 HAAB is at Mutanchiang

Ed wonders if there are any subs in the area that can be deployed to Bangkok as a welcome committee.

The General Staff is meeting in the Pentagon today and the general mood is good. American troops and supplies are all reaching their destinations on schedule with no interference by the Japanese. The faster these places are secure and built up the faster they can start to swing over to the offensive. All of the men in the meeting are of a similar mind in that they want to seize the initiative in the Pacific and start throwing the Japanese back.

I would like to hear from some of you about how you as the Allies or the Japanese won or lost the war.

I believe that attacking on many fronts only dilutes what could be overwhelming power focused on a given point.

I believe that Allied LBA is the key to winning the war as an advance under fighter cover and bombers leveling bases is the only way to go.

I believe that the longer the KB exists the less of a threat it will be when it finally locks horns with the Allied CVs as it's planes become obsolete and it's pilots less skilled as the war grinds on.

I believe that the Soviets being active are only a threat at this point and that as soon as they gain strength they should attack.

I believe the stalemate in China serves my purposes, for now, and that Chungking must not fall.

I believe that cutting Japan off from it's oil and resources is the way to win the war as Japan's industry will grind to a stuttering halt.

I believe that I would love to hear from you, my readers.  Please share your thoughts.

I know you guys are out there so how about sharing your thoughts?

July 21, 1942 The Pentagon

“Yes, I know and it's already on the way. OK, I'll see you then.” Ed hangs up the phone and asks an orderly if he happens to know the Senators schedule for their next home stand. The reply is that the team is on the road for a long trip and that he doesn't know when they return, but he'll check into it.

20 A is at Heiho
1.2K troops are at Rahaeng
8.3K troops are at Paramushio Jima
31.8K troops are at Mishan
4 AAR is at Toyama
52 CB is at Changchun
18 HFAR is at Myitkyina
23 AAR is at Rangoon
45 HAAB is on an AP bound for Bangkok
103 IJNAF BF is at Yap

The Wasp arrived at Pearl today and will join the rest of the CVs operating in the Noumea area.

The Palawan left in her convoy bound for Midway today.

A Japanese sub manages to put a torpedo into the unsuspecting DD Van Galen near Trimcomalee. The ship should manage to be fixed and then sent off to a repair yard for final repairs.

The submarine O23 was attacked by ASW assets, location unknown.

The submarine S-23 operating just north of Darwin, spots a convoy approaching and she's in the perfect position for an intercept. Once the transports draw close enough torpedoes are launched and an AP is struck. S-23 slips away in the darkness, her lookouts watching the receding AP that's on fire.

The coastal guns at Darwin hit another AP and it's on fire. The Japanese continue to land despite everything and their strength is growing. The defenders need help and soon if they are to hold.

Pete and his fellow conscripts are digging deep when they are told to grab their gear as they are going to be shifted to another location. “Sure, we just about get this spot the way they want it and off we go. Hey, do you think we will wear out these shovels?” asks the man next to Pete. What frightens Pete is the sound of artillery seems to be getting louder and that's the direction they're now heading.

Cuttlefish continues on her boring patrol. She has been joined by another sub so that the two of them can cover more territory and lessen the chance of a fleet slipping by them. More subs will be sent to increase the surveillance in the area.

Troops are readying to depart for Attu and Kiska Islands as the Americans edge ever closer to the Japanese.

Bill lies in his bunk staring at the ceiling in the BOQs when more men arrive. These officers, all junior to him, are busily discussing where they will head tonight. They ask Bill to join them and he declines as he's not in the mood for drinking and chasing women.

“I tell you he knows somehow. Maybe they smell different, but when Lucky goes after spiders he just knows. Some he makes a face at and hits them with his paw, while others he gingerly bites at and others he just flat out gobbles them up. I don't know which ones are dangerous, but he seems to know.” Red is very animated as he's telling the guys about the dog.

“Sure he's the Great Gray Hunter,” chimes in one of the men. They all share a laugh as their card game resumes. The men will have plenty to do soon enough when they are unloading at Midway, but until then if they're not on watch there's not a lot to do.

There is a scheduling problem in the near future as ships are supposed to get their upgrades. The demands of the war make it difficult to take ships out of service, but it must get done.

All convoys are unmolested and it has been decided that by the end of September the defensive line, LITS, will be as secure as it'll ever be. More troops are being earmarked for action in Australia and it is hoped that by the end of September the last of these units will be on their way there so that the planned offensive can kick off.

I tend to agree.

Australia is a waste of men and resources. Japan ought go for Noumea, Canton, Palmyra. Then concentrate the fleet and hope the Allies do not have patience.

China, advance on a broad front 'hearding sheep' to avoid being cut off by the Mongol Horde.

By 1944 the Japanese fleet is a liability, it will just be sunk for points, unless the Allies have managed
to loose a lot by attacking too soon (see para 2).
