Sub transport

Post by invernomuto »

Hi to all,
I do not understand how sub transport missions work in AE.
At the beginning of the guadalcanal scenario with the Japanese, if you try to form a sub transport TF with the 3 subs in Rabaul and try to load an LCU based there, all LCUs are grayed out because they're not in combat mode.
This seems a bug to me because at the start of the game all units in Rabaul ARE in combat mode. Moreover, if you change an unit mode from COMBAT to MOVE, you can load the troop with the sub.
Is this WAD?

Bye

troops in combat mode can only be loaded onto amphibious TFs.

That's ok for me, but the load screen says that I cannot load LCUS because they are not in combat mode! If I put them in combat mode I cannot load them, the only LCU I can load is in move mode.
Screen attached.

I'm surprised you can load it in move mode. I thought only 1 sub per turn could do a load now and the lcu had to be in strategic mode. This really slows down the use of sub transports and limits the player to cadre extracts. I experienced this extracting part of a few units from Manila as the allied player. The load screen message fooled me too for a while.

Well, it used to work [X(] [8|]

Duplicated the problem in all respects. Unit will only load if it is in "move" mode.

My hat is off to invernomuto for pointing out that it WILL still load in move mode.

I tried to load an Australian Commando Unit onto an SST, to land on Java in a little raid. Didn't load though, so I gave up on that operation. Too bad, as I had converted Argonaught for that purpose, and the entire unit did fit. I was going to land on that OIL installation north of Soerbaya.

I'm Ok with it though, because though I think a Commando raid is kosher, it's too easy to abuse sub invasions, by loading a fragment on it for a suicide attack, just to gather intel.

The message is insufficiently detailed. Sub transport rules are a bit complex and message just doesn't keep up.

Subs can transport two types of units:
1. Parachute units can be transported in combat mode. It actually should be commando units but there is no such designation in AE (or WITP) so we use parachute.
2. All units can only be transmitted in move mode (including parachute).

Just read the message as: wrong mode for sub transport.
