I will second Rick's advice to take a look at SSG's titles. Until Kharkov has some added content, I can't recommand that as $60 for a 16 turn game is steep imho.

16 Turns? WOW! I didn't get it because it was a single battle. But only 16 turns as well? Whew! Glad I didn't impulse buy that one (and I've come close very many times)

Question?

I remember playing a game (turn based, hexes) where I got to take a core group of my own units from scenario to scenario through a grandish sort of campaign.

I wish I could remember what game that was. It was fun though.

(Not the Panzer General series...I remember playing the original Panzer General...wow, that took up a lot of my time...years and years ago.)

Steel Panthers? ...if so and your eyesight is still good, you can find the free version here. But if your eyes need some help, there's a version with higher resolution that isn't free, elsewhere (via Shrapnel Games' site. Shrapnel also has a free version (sans the higher resolution). MAtrix Free version and Shrapnel's free version are both based on different iterations of the original series, so they play differently. Try 'em both! (can't go too far wrong for free!)

Be sure to take a look at Advanced Tactics. .....

How does AT compare to the game of Empire Deluxe (the latter versions). I have EDIE and it sounds similar although Empire Deluxe Internet Edition was fairly simple.

JUST GET WITP....seriously.....immersive, deep, long, detailed, grognardish. I have played it on both of my systems which are older than yours and it plays fine. I have WIN7 on both of my computers.

Seriously, if you havent played WITP, get it.....period.

Yes, though 16 turns is a bit deceptive in making it seem small. The map is absolutely huge as is the number of counters and with variants on the AO's, you actually get much more than 16 turns. I've played the game for a year before exhausting my enthusiasm. At the end of the day, it is still 16 turns with only a few, very small user made scenarios out there to date. My ability to gush and recommend will change once Across the Dneiper 2 (along with Husky and a couple of nice user made scenarios) is released as an expansion to Kharkov.

That might of been what I was thinking about in that post. I didn't even remember that game existed until you mentioned the name.

I'm actually an "older" grognard. I date back to the time of the original Avalon Hill boardgames. The only computers we saw back then were on television shows.

I played those too. Wow. Lots of memories here. I played mostly board games until the original Panzer General came out. That was the game that made me realize there just might be a future in computer gaming. I wore out some brain cells (on me and my computer) playing that game.

I'll get something (or two) by Thursday or so. But, I need to tell you guys, reading through this thread is bringing back some great memories for me.

I'm going to hate to end it by buying a game.

The more I think about it, the more I think it was this series that I was referring to.

I remember having my own core group of units and bringing them from scenario to scenario. Having the core units always made a person a little more careful in planned operations. It seemed to add just a little touch of immersion in that it was necessary to be concerned about a little more than achieving the raw objectives.

I had lots of fun with that series.

Okay, well, I bought John Tiller's Campaign Series but I still intend to buy one more game. Right now I'm leaning to...well...I'm not sure...

If you would, you guys can start PMing me your addresses, because when my wife finds out I've bought two or more computer games this month, I'll probably need to come live with one of you guys. Just FYI there.

I still welcome your ideas on the other game(s).

You know, you CAN play ASL over the internet.  Grognards will tell you there isn't anything that compares to it.

They'll be wrong of course. There are many things that compare to ASL... like memorizing all volumes of the Encylopedia Britannica, amongst others. *grin*

As soon as Panther Games Bulge game arrives (which should be soon) I say buy that without a shadow of a doubt.

The campaign series game you bought was an old game...the Panther Games engine is the future in my opinion for PC wargames....I hate RTS games but this is different plays at a nice speed...loads of tension and feels realistic...

Buy it you wont regret it....very few who have bought thier previous games have been dissapointed...infact I havent heard of anyone not liking the series.

What he said. The Panther games (HttR, COTA, the upcoming "Battle for the Bulge") display pretty much the crown of operational (realistic) wargaming, imho. Actually there are rare comments from people who did not fully grasp the pausable continuous-time element and the fact that the player is not forced to micromanage each and every unit (he can, if he wants to, though), thanks to the brilliant player (and enemy) AI. So with this engine, the player can actually focus on the main objective/task (just like a rl general). Get this game. [:)]

The Airborne Assault games strike me as what computer-wargaming ought to be. They free us from hexes and turns, stuff that us old-timers could only dream about back in the 1960's. Both the friendly and "enemy" AI are quite good. And while I'm frankly ambivalent about the effect that computerization has had on my hobby, I have nothing but kudos to shower on this handful of titles from Panther Games.

I had a game called airborne assault I think. Is this what you are talking about. Issue orders to the HQ and the subordinate units are ordered automatically.
It had the blandest map. I've seen more detail on a tablecloth. Made it hard to like..

That was their first ever game...the later games are so much better...check out their forums...the Bulge game is the top thread in the coming soon forum...
