Oh, I see. Daddy was a redcoat then, eh? Is that any better? [:'(]

Nope. Daddy was USAF (almost as bad). But the ancestor you speak of, call him grandad to the 9th power, lost his country. Then had a whole bunch of his relatives and friends hung for treason. That's what the new owners called it when some of the tennants objected to the real estate transaction. [:D] You basically had two choices , join the British forces.or hide in the woods. My ancestors , who had been mostly French soldiers , took up a new career path, that is "hiding in the woods". So for many generation my ancestors practiced this craft, knowing that to come out would mean that the British landlords would greet them give them a shilling and a new suit of red clothing , then ship them off somewhere where they would never be seen again.

One of my ancestors in the mid 1860's decided to beat this game. He would go south , and become an American. As he crossed the border , the officials were delighted to see him! They gave him a warm welcome, some money and a new suit of Blue clothing. When He asked if they were sending him oversea's to fight a nasty war, they said, "oh no, you'll stay right in the USA!" He said that doesn't sound too bad. "But your sending me to fight a nasty war?". "Oh no, we wouldn't do that to you! No we are sending you to fight a very pleasant war. It's even called a civil war. Very polite you see". My ancestor thought , if it's civil , that means polite in English , so how bad can it be? And they even said he could go somewhere warm for the winter. Some place warm called "Virginia". Maybe even "Georgia". Well , if they are named after girls , they must be nice places, right? [:D]

So that's how my ancestors came to the USA. FEDERAL express![:D]

Georgia was named after a girl? [:D]

No , but if you read the rest of the story , my ancestor got just about everything else wrong too! [:D]

They are not. In fact they are even getting rid of the CVN-65.

Thanks for destroying all my childhood dreams. [:@]

No charge, happy to oblige. Wait , I'll make it worse. They were going to name the next CVN Enterprise. But then Gerald Ford died. End of story. Maybe they'll name a mine sweeper or a supply boat? [:D]

Yep. We have the same thing in the USA , except we don't get allowances for them. They are called "city ordinances". Shovel your sidewalk , or pay a fine![:D]

Not much for "asking", are they? [:D]

Oh , they ask. And ask. And ask. And if you don't oblidge them , they take, take and take. [:D]

Well. Do you want congrats or condolences? [:D]

Condolences. It's a awfully short time for moving. I guess I can forget about sleep or the Thread for the next two months.....[:(]

What will you do while you're there?

Buy a boat, get a job, join the Curtis Lemay flying club, learn the local history , continue my masters program on line, volunteer at some military museum (probably the SAC museum). Join a gun club , and most dangerous of all, try to teach my wife to shoot (again[:(][X(]). I'll keep busy. And lots of road trips to a part of the country I've never lived in before. [:)]

Philistine. Every Trekkie knows she was built (the D model) at Utopia Planitia shipyards, not on Earth.

True. But 1701 was built in San Fran. [:)]

No , it was built in a corn field in Iowa. [:D]

Not sure what you mean - I'm playing the "bachelor uncle" role to the hilt if that's what you mean. [;)]

If you're hinting at grandkids then yes, I had that on the way as well but we had a miscarriage. That was some 20 years ago however. After that, not much, no. If I find the right woman, then maybe. Problem is I'm starting to get "a little outdated" [;)]

You were outdated after year 34, don't ya know? We only live relevant lives from 25 to 34....or at least that's what the marketing dweebs say. [:D]
Yeah, the same marketing dweebs that produce "TV Shop" ... [:'(]

The marketing department : a bunch of mindless jerks who were 1st up against the wall when the revolution started! [:D] Apologies to Douglas Adams! [:D]

What are you, a marketer? [:'(]

ETA: Since I'm 42 this year, I'll ask you to speak up a bit, sonny.

In addition to my Geritol addiction, my consumption of prunes, liver and onions, black strap molasses and grits/polenta provides my sustenance. Most of my remaining cashola / moola / bacon goes towards a cooperative investment opportunity with two gentlemen abroad in the Ivory Coast and Nigeria.

Now, if I were a marketer, I wouldnt pay the least attention to your geriatric @ss. [:D]

It takes a lot of money to make a ship that ugly! It's a good thing that the USN cancelled the program. That pig's too ugly to live! [:D]

Looks like something from the old Red Alert game.

I guess it wouldn't be of any use trying to speak Swedish to you? [:'(]

He can barely speak English. [:)]
Pfftt...[:'(]

As a professorial type, I can speak "University gibberish" with increasing aplomb, however. Almost as good as the scout from "Blazing Saddles". He spoke 'authentic frontier gibberish', IIRC.

OK , Mars. But the "cannon " is dead. Enterprise damaged it, and the new "Star Trek" killed it! [X(]

Maybe, but since no one watched Enterprise, it doesnt count. [:D]

Ah, no. Perhaps not. But there's marketing money in that geriatric colon, those geriatric bunions and that geriatric...well...never mind.

Well, I just received the 'official" phone call. I will be in Omaha Nebraska on 1 May , 2010. [X(]
Safe travels, Steve. Is this good news for you and your family?

Thanks CB. No not really. My wife was in hopes of retirement and being able to work in this area. But it is better than some places that were open. But it's definately not overseas, where we've been asking for for over 20 years.

Hey, maybe you'll totally lobe Nebraska and decide to retire there. How many times have you known Warren Buffet to be wrong? [:D]

It's nice to have variety in ancestors (that old genetic thing ya know! [:D]). I'm a boring 75% Quebecois, with a quarter Irish contaminataion thrown in.[:D] At least that's what my dad used to say to taunt my late mother , who was very proud of he Irish heritage. He used to love to play "Blazing saddles" for that particular scene where (politically correct version) they would let in the 1st two ethnic groups , but NO IRISH! That ALWAYS had her out of her chair screaming at the TV. [:D]

I'm starting to see where you get your sense of humor from. [:D]

They have lakes and rivers in Nebraska that one can use pleasure craft on. How else do you think they can irrigate the corn?

Now Cornish is an interesting background! I had a classmate at King Alf's (now Winchester University) who actually could speak some Cornish , passed down from his family. The head of linguistics had a field day with him! [:)]

And what we learn from this story is that some information is best left private? [:D]
