combined Betty strike again... will take a couple of weeks more to get those two trashed base forces back to Alice Springs... seriously doubt that the Betty strikes will be able to completely destroy them so it´s not really severe... the only thing I´m lacking are flak guns for the base forces and those two units here nearly don´t have any anyway, things like support squads, eng or eng vehicles are plenty in the pool...

that´s an interesting one... I got sigint about an AA rgt being moved on a Momi class DD to Lae and therefore I kept my B-17 on nav attack with a Lightning recon squadron over Lae daily. Today the fast transport TF arrived (good move to use a fast TF instead of some freighters) and Cairns launched a big strike in the morning already... what really pisses me off in this case is this new "feature" that enables IJN TFs to put up SEVERE flak fire BEFORE even the Cap attacks and before the real bombing runs start with the flak firing again of course. As many people pointed out on the forum, this is completely unrealistic and unhistorical because what the game tries to model is main gun fire right into the sea to create some splashes to alert the Cap and to "direct" them to the spotted attackers. What the game gives the Japanese though is a huge flak barrage even before the Cap attacks and even before the real bombing begins. This is just nuts. It also damages/takes down your fighters of course if there are any. In this case, out of the 20 damaged bombers, HALVE of it was damaged with this "directional" AA fire! Stupid, nothing else. Either there´s a bug that gives the IJN TFs the ability to use their full AA value during this phase or the routine is completely wrong giving this "directional" fire far too much effect. Noone can seriously be thinking that this kind of AA fire would damage as many of my bombers as 5 enemy fighters and the "real" AA fire from the TF afterwards can do. Wrong, completely wrong. If there was this rare incident when such kind of AA fire took out a low flying torp bomber then ok, but water splashes usually don´t reach up 6000ft to damage a B-17. I´m also ok with a DD being away from the main force putting up AA fire on the incoming strike, but this single DD hardly would have enough AA firepower with a couple of 25mm and 13mm guns to damage nearly a dozen incoming bombers. As it stands now, this idea of incorporating early warning AA fire for the Japanese is nice, but like it is implemented, it´s totally BS. Sorry, for this bad word again. It really looks like the Japanese would get their full AA potential during this early warning phase and therefore get their AA fire twice... even if it´s not the full AA value, in any case, it´s BY FAR too high as it stands now. In this case, this early warning AA fire would perhaps damage one bomber or two if one of the DDs would have a real lucky day. Not damaging a dozen, then the Cap engages and during the bombing run another halve dozen bombers damaged. Means the early warning fire was as effective as the Cap and the real flak phase together. Strange?

Unfortunetely for us it was a rainy day again and this kept the hit rate of our bombers low but a 500lb bomb into a DD is nothing you can complain about... ground losses tell that this is a fast transport...

more thunderstorms in the Australian desert (at least these are all desert hexes) and our hit rate is awful... I kept my bombers 5000ft higher than the usual 6000ft as I noticed quite some flak fire here in previous attacks... I should just leave the staging base of the Zeroes alone and keep my B-17 flying escort to Tennant Creek as it´s easier for the bombers to take the Zeroes down A2A than hitting them on the ground due to the awful weather all the time... ehanced weather on... we also launch strikes in the afternoon, though now the weather is even worse... from moderate rain it has changed to thunderstorms now... nevertheless another DD is hit by a 500lb bomb and reported heavily damaged... would love to see one or two DDs being sunk, DDs are one of the Japanese bottlenecks IMO... and just like in the morning attacks, the warning AA fire was murderous, damaging most of the attacking bombers even before the Cap engaged... holy god, how could this have been agreed on during testing? I guess there was no agreement and one party prevailed? [;)] In none of the books I know of is this warning AA fire described as as "deadly" as the normal AA fire a Japanese TF was able to put up... well, perhaps those books are highly biased towards the Allied side...

in total we score three hits on the IJN DDs, one causing heavy damage, one causing heavy fires and one not causing notable damage... doubt that a DD will go down... we suffered dozens of damaged bombers today, their morale is pummeled now (mostly due to the magic warning AA fire) and I will swap out some of the Cairns´ squadrons with the Alice Springs´ squadrons... Lae has received some more flak guns and I guess we will soon have to adjust our attack alt from low level to medium alt attacks. Evne though our bombers looked like Swiss cheece when they returned to Cairns, only two were actually lost. One didn´t return with the crew missing and one was written off. The heavy bombers really are beasts, with their numbers growing in late 42 this will be a real problem for the Japanese. Our medium bombers are another story though...

The Tanami desert must be the world´s wettest desert... knowing that the weather model has ever been borked from day one of WITP it could at least more or less work in places where you shouldn´t encounter endless rain 365 days of a year... so many days with severe storms, thunderstorms, heavy rain in this DESERT that naming it DESERT in AE is quite funny... The Zeroes couldn´t do anything against our best long range fighters and the only damage done was by flak... bad weater and 11.000ft attack alt so no hits...

Japanese Task Force Manages to Escape
Task forces break off...

Rainer was mopping up another dot base in the Solomons and I´ve thought I could cause some trouble with sending in a cruiser with a destroyer escort to sink an expected PB and two freighters perhaps. While not really risky I´ve thought this would force Rainer to increase the cover for his operations near the frontline. Needless to say that I was shocked when my cruiser TF surprised a fast transport TF made up by 5 heavy cruisers and halve a dozen DDs. We scored nearly no hits during the surprise phase and the only thing that saved us was the fact that we were engaging a fast transport TF that was trying to get away from our surface combat TF. I wanted to have two heavy cruisers in my TF but CA Canberra was torpedoed by a sub earlier and she´s in Brisbane´s drydock. It really was surprising that Rainer uses such a TF to take one of the few remaining dot bases in the Solomons but he also did this to ferry some troops to Lae (only DDs in that case). And Lae is in range of my heavy bombers, whereas the Solomons are out of range of any of my assets other than a surface combat or carrier raid. Our cruiser was hit four times by 20cm gunfire and La Triomphant even took a long lance. At the end of this battle I expected to lose the destroyer and would probably be able to save the cruiser if not attacked again...

I´ve got no idea what this stupid naval search is about or why such a TF can constantly move over nearly a dozen of my subs when going both in and out again... just nothing works, as if it wouldn´t even be in the game. No idea how many times such a huge TF already moved in and out to destroy my shipping and to bombard Akyab without even being spotted. How could I even think about one of the dozen subs to attack such a TF? Stupid me... Must be the 10th time today... but everytime one of my carriers or cruisers stumbles into a hex with an enemy sub it gets torpedoed... at least this was the case so far in this campaign... can´t be real...

RE: AE = Alpine Edition <-> Rainer79 vs. ranting castor troy

Post by castor troy »

Expected both ships to have more damage, as it looks now, the cruiser is far from danger of being sunk and even the destroyer has a fair chance to make it... the cruiser and the three undamaged DDs are now moving to Brisbane and La Triomphant is moving to Townsville (closest major port)... we got away pretty lucky it seems... as you can see, we fired quite a lot of torps with not hitting it´s target... Allied TFs really perform awful when it comes to torpedo attacks...

more Thunderstorms in the desert, a Marauder is lost to a cannon burst from a Zero... I just can´t use medium bombers when there are fighters in the air somewhere... I feel depressed for every single bomber that is lost due to the low number of replacements... I will never have enough medium bombers until mid 45. I still can´t believe that from early to late 43 there were only 10 medium bombers going to the USAAF in the Pacific. 10 bombers per month in 43? [&:] Guess by then I will get three times more heavy bombers. 10 medium bombers per month is enough to keep up with the losses of one or at best two squadrons per month. And in one screwed up attack you can lose the replacements of two or three months in a day...

Aircraft Attacking:
38 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 38000 feet

have moved in a lot of fighters yesterday to fly Cap because I had two ships unloading here... knowing of course that the daily recon over Akyab will notice this and the result would be massed Oscar sweeps at max altitude (higher than all my fighters here could go)... I´ve moved the fighters out again as I kept my freighters only one day there to unload and the Oscars swept an empty sky... amazingly enough, their attacks didn´t coordinate and we could have had a chance with massed fighters in the air as 38 attackers aren´t enough to have the neverending bounce when facing 100+ fighters on Cap...

leaking Cap... leaking Zero Cap from Rangoon (3 hexes)... while trying to pick off leaking Oscar Cap in Burma with my Ligthnings, I have forgot about thinking about leaking Cap over Prome. Prome is in range of two bases with fighters on Cap and the IJAAF Awacs over Burma directed in nearly a dozen Zeroes from Rangoon to have a field day... the 11 Zeroes shot down 16 Blenheim (a monthly replacement) with more bombers lost to ops... what a disaster... I wouldn´t have attacked if I would have thought about leaking Cap or if my recon would have given me intel about a single fighter at this base. Recon was right, at the base itselve, there were only bombers (Sallies) so I´ve set over a hundred bombers to launch an attack... my bad

like I´ve said, a disaster... clearly shows me once again that using medium bombers is a nogo, even more so when we´re talking about 100% crap like Blenheims or Hudsons... unfortunetely the Blenheims seem to be the backbone of the RAF in India until really late in the war. Leaves us with a monthly replacement of 6 (in words: s i x) Wellingtons for the RAF... all Blenheim squadrons have been pulled from the front and are now doing rear are training. Will then have a dozen elite crews for each Wellington to man...

here comes the follow on strike and I´m quite happy that the bombers launched in two strikes as it could have been far worse... the Wellington proves not to be real combat worthy either as two crashed and are rated as op losses... so much about the RAF bomber force, it´s useless so to say... got 6 Beaufort I that don´t get a single ac as replacements until late 42. Got a lot of 100% useless Blenheim and one squadron with Wellingtons that has just lost two of them. Leaves me with another halve a dozen Wellingtons in the pool. Ok, we have to rely on the fighter squadrons then, they´re all equipped with various types of Hurricanes with some 50 fighters in the pool. The Hurricane does ok vs. the Oscar and does very good against the Zero (due to having the altitude edge). What will be a problem will be the fact that June 42 means the entry of the Tojo and when comparing the Hurricane vs Oscar vs Tojo then say good bye to holding our own... Even worse when I think about the P-40...

am receiving some more US bomber and fighter squadrons in India (the AVG will be withdrawn soon though) and am also moving in some more US squadrons via ship. Will have to use US bombers for offensive actions and also have to rely on US fighter squadrons to take the losses as the British squadrons just aren´t enough I fear. The main problem though will be the fact that I won´t have enough US bombers to equip US squadrons in India, not even thinking about keeping them at strenght... and my losses in this PBEM have been.... light, really light...

clear sky today but also some Zeroes in the air... I just can´t believe how it works to have Zeroes on LRCAP here every day, not suffering any losses...[&:] or my recon and bomber attacks are completely useless and can´t give me intel about where those fighters really are... the airfield here is empty, as well as Daly Waters´ airfield... Katherine is the only one that is occupied, some 9 or 10 hexes away from Tennant Creek... so how does this work? The same question could be asked around Buna and Lae when I only get intel about empty airfields everywhere around but still a dozen fighters in the air no matter what base I attack in this region... Woodoo?[&:]

a single attack on a Marauder took the bomber out again... will have to upgrade another medium bomber squadron to the B-17 (some 20 in the pool) and will have to revert to heavy bomber attacks only... the medium bombers can only be used in escorted attacks or in attacks against 100% uncapped targets. Problem with escorting them is a) don´t have fighters that have sufficient range (except the Aussie Beaufighters) and b) if I would escort them, I would lose halve a dozen fighters doing the escort as they would just get chopped to pieces... so I will have to use the B-17 instead, the best fighter/bomber combo on the map...

follow on strike packs coming in, the base is trashed and the Japanese eng have some work again... I just don´t hit any ac on the ground as there aren´t any... only Zeroes in the air coming out of a place I don´t know... same goes for Buna, no idea where those fighters should be coming from... Tennant Creek is even worse when I think about the Japanese being able to fly LRCAP over a distance of 9 or 10 hexes not suffering any losses and us having 80+ fatigued pilots after one day LRCAP over two hexes when we tried that out of India...

sorry, but what has the latest patch done to artillery now? The pendulum swings and swings and swings it seems. Two of the last three attacks resulted in losses on our side only... can´t figure out how that should work when the enemy is trying to move out of the hex, halve a dozen of our dedicated art units are doing a bombardment with 116 guns (mountain guns up to 4.5inch field guns - amazingly all more or less the same effect in the database) and we are again the ones who suffer while the enemy doesn´t suffer a single casualty... funny indeed...

[:(] a depressing result today... tried to pick off leaking Cap again and the outcome of this engagement was more than unexpected. Even though the numbers on both sides were nearly equal and we were going in hihger than the defenders on Cap, we soon were bounced, better say the Oscars started diving and firing from behind on the Lightnings. Surprising so to say. And while there is still a lot of discussion on the altitude matters on the forum, this result just convinces me once again about the mega advantage of altitude. Why? Because with the altitude advantage you normally get the "dive on" and "shoot at". In this case this wasn´t true and we got bad results with only a 1:1 in total while we usually get far better results when we get a long "dive phase". 5 Lightnings lost is something we can´t afford, while the Japanese won´t run out of airframes at any time when I look at their factories in Japan...

looks like I´ve found a base with enemy fighters on New Guinea finally... was shocked by this high number of fighters in the air... but with the B-17 crews´ def skill our bombers are unstoppable, even if there are more than three dozen fighters in the air. This is encouraging us to also fly our bombers against heavily defended targets if we have to do so... as you can see, our losses have been more than light... on the other side, the Japanese have brought up nearly all their fighters it seems as we haven´t torched more than one on the ground even though we nuked the level 1 airfield... Rainer is smart to not build up his airfields as he can put enough fighters on a level 1 airfield and even though we hit it hard, a level 1 airfield is repaired in no time... must be depressing for the Japanese not being able to do anything against the heavy bombers... only the two engined Nik is somewhat useful against the heavy bombers...

back to back attack, wanted to torch some of the enemy fighters on the ground and that´s what we did today... 40 fighters couldn´t do much against our heavy bombers and the 18 today could do even less... they are swept aside and the airfield is trashed again... to really harm such a heavy bomber strike would be to have 100+ fighters on Cap. Even then you can´t expect to take more than 10 of them down I guess... the first months I underestimated the strenght of the heavy bomber squadrons but with their crews getting better and better the bombers seem to have become a more or less unbeatable weapon... the heavy bombers and my subs (when the torps start to function properly) will be the war winners...

I-31 takes a near miss and the next DD is out of depth charges without having achieved anything... I´m not sure if the four ASW TFs near Sydney have sunk a single one of the subs encountered lately... we for sure have heavily damaged one and scratched the paint of one or two more but that´s it I guess...

and bang on the right target... no fuel or oil aboard and no heavy damage gives the TK a fair chance to make it though as Singapore isn´t far away... using working torps and only achieving one hit out of six torps is just as depressing as the performance of Dutch and British subs have been so far... I guess this is only the first or second hit achieved by Truant in all the months...

The Kongos are still around Malaya, guess the two Kongos will be used to whipe out my positions in India... amazingly to me as I would use all four of them with KB...

Lae gets visited again by some of our strike packs and I´m surprised to meet nearly 30 fighters on Cap over this totally trashed airfield... no idea how much damage you need to inflict on an airfield to shut it down... 99 it seems... not that it would really hurt the B-17s when they meet resistance, although three of them were lost today which is by far more than usual...

mid June 42 and with the 5.5 IJA divisions retreating from Akyab and the overall situation lately I guess this is it with the Japanese expansion. We´re still building up and I´m in no hurry to go on the offensive big style, if you start too early, everything will just take longer and will result in more losses than if you start when you´re really ready for it IMO. CV Wasp will come in in a couple of days and when she joins the other carriers we will have one more carrier with the rest fully repaired and upgraded (except Saratoga which still needs two months for repairs - in total nearly 9 months after being hit by two sub torps, takes an awful long time due to her high tonnage). So the first "major" offensive will be our Army moving on Tennant Creek at the moment but it will take some three weeks more to finally have marched up the desert path. With all our carriers together (again, except Saratoga) we can then think about moving forward with an amphibious invasion as we should then field more than enough aircraft to tangle with KB. Especially as we´ve whiped out 2/3 of KB´s elite bomber crews over Sydney some time ago. We sure would take losses but so would KB. So it will be interesting if Rainer wants to commit KB in a first major carrier engagement if he could rely on taking losses that could also turn out crippling for him. I haven´t yet decided which target to attack but my troops are planning for several targets on the list.

we did of course not get a shot at the battlewaggons even that it was the hundred and seventyfifth chance to do so... interesting hex we met this TF though, this is the North tip of Sumatra, either Rainer is using waypoints off the usual shipping lanes to avoid my subs while moving towards Rangoon or he´s moving towards Ceylon (doubt it)... we never even take a shot at his capitol ships due to his DDs being far superior than ours in keeping subs from attacking so even the mass employ of subs won´t discourage my opponent at all from using his capitol ships in areas with a dozen of my subs...
