HCE background: What era are the ships from?

Post by acarney »

Looked through the manual for any recommended reading material; tactics or hardware.

What time frame are the ships & aircraft from? Wondering of any of the older Jane's books would be of any use to understanding the ships used in the game. Mid to late 1990's, perhaps?

There are some specialist databases available for various periods, but the basic database that comes with the game gives you what's in service today, or is projected to be in service in the next five to ten years, plus a few old Vietnam-era units for one scenario in the WestPac battleset.

To expand on what Warhorse64 said:

The official database that comes with the game, the HCDB, generally focuses on platforms from about 1980 to the present day, with some exceptions at either end, including the Vietnam era units earlier mentioned and some future platforms not yet in service.

There are several custom databases out there that cover other time periods or have other areas of focus:

1. My HCE Americas Database (HCDA) focuses on North, Central and South America, and a time period similar to the HCDB.

2. My HCE World Wars Database (HCWW) focuses on platforms from the World War I and World War II eras.

3. The HC_35to50 database (by Rene Haar) focuses on the 1935 to 1950 time period.

4. The HC_65to80 database (by Rene Haar) focuses on the 1965 to 1980 time period.

5. The HC_80to95 database (by Rene Haar) focuses on the 1980 to 1995 time period.

6. The HCStrikerFictDB (by Tony Eischens) focuses on fictional or potential future platforms, or missed opportunities, like the F-14 Super Tomcat, for example.

THANKS guys,

If you had pick a version of Jane's Fighting Ships, for more info about the ships in HCE, would you choose? Doesn't sound like any edition would be perfect, but one within the last 10 yrs would be reasonably accurate ... or not really?

Something in the last ten years would probably be a good bet for the current-era DBs. There is also quite a lot of useful information on the web; for example,  http://www.hazegray.org/worldnav   You might also try the web sites for whatever navy catches your fancy.

At some point in the future the gap between the 35to50 and the 65to80 will be closed. And there are plans and preparation work to expand the timeline db series to cover the time from at least 1905 to future in 15 year steps... maybee also a db for the age of sail, wen the trials show promising results....[8D]

Hehe, I didn't know you were an optimist Rene

simply a question how to model the old muzzle loaded weapons....

at least combined sail/steam ships should be possible... and feel realistic[8|][8D]

Well keep in mind that the game is actually from the early 1980s. I actually played the old Three-Sixty version of the game (it came on 5.25" Floppy disks...man I'm old...LOL).

So for the original battlesets, the ships and aircraft would be from the late 1970s and early 1980s. With each edition you'd get some newer stuff added.

The current version of the game will have some older tech in the original battlesets along with state of the art in the official database.
