shipyards ?

Post by tojothedog »

well
I have actually given up on being embarrassed asking questions (as a newbie)
but I am in need of senior input
playing Guadalcanal
have a BB in dire need of repairs
40/58

as this is a PBEM (I am the Allies)
where the heck do I find a shipyard for dry dock ?
I am currently pierside, and set the repair as critical
but... not sure when floatation will start being repaired.

Thanks (as usual)
btw... I miss those training webcasts...
ya have no idea of how much they have helped
from a newbie perspective
Thanks again

You are going to have to find a large port if you want some serious damage repaired with lots of supply. Probably some place like Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. Sydney is the largest port and the biggest naval capacity so would be the best. You could maybe try New Caledonia or New Zealand too depending on how big those ports are. Just my two cents worth.

Sydney has a size 50 repair shipyard, but you need to get rid of that float damage before you attempt to move there, do you have some support (repair) vessels on hand at the port you've docked as well?

I'm the guy who made the video tutes - and yes I should make some more about this and update some others...

But I've got a girlfriend who is pressing for marriage, I've got to move apt, my Dean of Studies just loaded me up with organising 9 hours a week of engineering lessons + my own classes and I help maintain Tracker ... so something has got to give. [8D]

One thing at a time ...

Sydney's your only option in Guadalcanal.  You should reduce Sys damage and 'minor' flotation damage before trying to get there though.  Don't move faster than Cruise Speed.  The other limitation is that the BB is going to consume virtually all of the capacity of the shipyard so it may be best to move it in and out of the shipyard when more pressing repairs are needed.  The other option is to write it off for operations and park it so it won't cost the VPs if it should sink.

it has a size 50 shipyard in the Guad scen? Now that´s a surprise as this means every fridging ship can be moved into this dry dock as it´s big enough. In the full campaign it´s a level 30 shipyard which means your fat carriers and battleships won´t fit. And was it true that Sydney´s SY was big enough for all Allied CVs and BBs in real life?

And to also answer the OP, are you sure you even want the BB in a shipyard? The scen is so short you won´t ever have it repaired so all you want is not having it sunk, so I would just move it to some place and disband it to have it safe.

You really need to send an AR or ARD to where the ship is, or a slightly larger port that is very close by. Chances are with 58 float damage it won't make a very long trip without sinking.

Actually Sydney was argueably as large and capable as Pearl Harbour during the war so I am also surprised that it is only a 30 in the Campaign Game.

yep, my advice, FIRST before S, send the ship to the closest port of any size, disband in port and try to save the ship.. send any ar ships there too.. put ship on pierside until repair ships getthere, ar, then switch to repair ship.. once flot dmg is below 50, you are good to be escorted to the shipyard but do escort it as enemy subs will no boubt be reading these reports and hunting for you!
good luck
note I have save some REALLT bad shap ships! over 90 damage by using these steps

Man, you guys need to try the Guadalcanal scenario.  It's a blast.  No ARs, no ARDs, low supply, low fuel, pay  PPs to get what you need to the front.  The reason the Sydney is a size 50 is because that is the only place to repair heavily damaged ships.

Chalk me up as a Allied Guadalcanal FB

I thought a TF was always guaranteed to move one hex in a day. It appears I have a lonely DD with 98 engine hits and about 80 flotation that will not move and is dead in water. Has not moved out of a coastal hex for three days. Maybe it is because the next hex it moves into will be deep sea that it will not go? If I move another TF to the hex will it tow this ship to safety? The closest friendly port is about 8 hexes away.
