CAP only, please!

Post by EricLarsen »

I sure hope that WitP will have a CAP only mission for fighter units. Nothing is more aggravating in UV than seeing fighter units set to Escort/CAP go off escorting recon flights or bombing missions against targets that have no CAP. Using the Long Range CAP setting is a way to work around that problem, but the cost in fatigue usually isn't worth it and requires many fighter units to switch turns. I would like to see the LRCAP feature in UV be made into a dual-use function whereby the lRCAP would still work as usual at 100% but when a player reduced the percentage the feature would then work as normal CAP over the home base/tf with the target destination blacked out. With the long range fighter the IJN has early in the war, and then the Allies later in the war this is really necessary so that long-range fighters aren't going off on some long-range tangent escorting strikes they shouldn't. I would hope that they could then retrofit this very important feature back into UV.

I must agree here. I can't stand to see my fighters gallavanting off on escort missions when they SHOULD be shooting down the Betty's bombing their harbor and runways.

showboat1,
I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who wanted this and who got peeved wathcing the program send escorts when none were necessary. I just hope someone from the WitP/UV team will see this and have a heart and give us the flexibility we need in fighters. I hate having to use the LRCAP feature set to zero hexes just to keep fighters from going off on useless escort missions rather than defending their base when that's far more necessary.

Eric,

If Matrix plans on using the UV mission routines for WitP, I would push for a dedicated CAP mission as well.

Never understood why it was assumed (if it was) that players would never have wanted it in UV. Maybe they thought allowing up to 90% CAP on the Escort and Sweep missions was good enough and they could save the extra button. They probably didn't allow for paranoid wargamers and their CV TF's.

Drongo,
The manual states that the program uses some discretion as to how it applies escort. I sure haven't seen this as it seems that the program sends the max possible. Far too often I watch the program waste escorts on bombing missions where there is no CAP, and then has too little to send up to protect it's own base when attacked. This is really a problem early for the IJN and later for the Allies as they have long range fighters that just can cover too much area and get sucked into too many escort jobs too far from base. I sure hope the UV/WitP team will finally acknowledge this weakness and do something to fix it so players have better control over their CAP/Escort missions. If they just made the LRCAP button multifunctional so that at 100% it's LRCAP and at less than 100% it's just regular CAP flying over it's home airfield/carrier.
