interesting... first stratosphere sweep after the latest patch and my Lightnings got bounced by the Zeroes that have been set to fly at 6.000ft... first time in this campaign... strange things happen if you know that nothing has been changed? [&:] until exactly this turn it would have been true that such a number of fighters on a sweep flying higher than such a small number of fighters on Cap, the sweep would get the endless "dive" to whipe the floor with the Cap. In this surprising case noone had the "dive" in the beginning, changing over to the "dive" for the Oscars and the Zeroes to end with the "dive" for the Lightnings... very, very interesting... nothing has been changed with the patch, yet both my opponent and me have noticed that this was "strange" so to say... ???

not that I wouldn´t like it, it´s just not what has been true in the six months game time before...

nav search has been the killer of the day again... I can´t go lower with my nav search settings and I won´t, as it´s more or less useless already anyway so I´ll just take the losses until I´ve got so few squadrons left that 17 PBY replacements per month will be enough to keep them fully operational... at some point I will just strip the Pacific of patrol squadrons and will only have them near the frontline

this is really getting ridicoulos... probably the 10th time in a row a huge enemy TF comes in for a bombardement, avoids nearly a dozen subs going in and out again and 50 aircraft on nav search have so far NEVER spotted such a TF... not to talk about the fact that this is an uber nuke compared with WITP nukes...

but the biggest joke (once again as this has happened probably halve a dozen times too already) is the fact that I wanted to set up a trap but it just reversed once again... all those aircraft at Akyab should attract a naval bombardment and when the bombardment TF goes in my BB surface combat TF nearby will REACT and tear the Kongos to pieces... in theory of course... now I´m just a stupid a$$hole that after playing WITP and AE for 5 years now still thinks you could rely on the game to do anything as expected, it was - of course - not as expected as the surface combat TF nearby that has been set to react 6 hexes has just been frozen in place... how else could it have been? Wanting the game to do anything? You will fail for sure... stupid me, I would tell anyone on the forum not to rely on a game routine when setting up something like this, yet I´m stupid enough to try it... silly me...

so not just did the trap not work, we also suffer from an uber nuke... yeah, ridicoulos... why do I even bother sending my aircraft and ships to the front, I should just keep everything 12 hexes behind the front, further building up until mid 43. IJN capitol ships have been repeatadly going after high numbers of my subs back and forth without even being targeted... we end up a couple of times heavily escorted by DDs in the same hex as IJN subs and take hit after hit on carriers or other capitol ships... funny, while knowing that there´s no bias in the code for either side in this case, the probability of IJN ships going over one of my subs for 154 times without even being shot at and my carrier TFs doing it twice and both times taking crippling damage (Saratoga out of the war for 8 months) is just amazing me...

here´s the setup... Rainer has to fear nothing, heck, he doesn´t even realize how the situation is as he hasn´t spotted all those subs, nor has he spotted my BBs that have been waiting for a week already... he can operate without being in any danger and scores another uber nuke... who cares, the Allied get thousands of frontline aircraft per month ...(sarcasm off)...

with the new widescreen mode I´m not able to take a screenshot that is below the max size for file upload... [:(] while the screenshot looked good, I had to resize it and now it looks awful of course... how do people post full screenshots now?

with the far from satisfying aircraft replacements given for the Allied until late 45, a result like this is of course frightening and two of those results can stall you for another month...

knowing that there have been changes to bombardments in AE compared to WITP, I still note the same as in WITP and this makes it not that hard to nuke bases. a) you need recon daily and b) your opponent has to have ships or aircraft at the base... if this is true, your chances to get a nuke (or uber nuke like today) are pretty good... the bombardments before could by far not achieve such a result as I had my airfield empty... voila, the airfield is filled up again and we get a nuke... now that you take more losses when you actually have more ac on an airfield if the airfield is hit is fine by me, but why it is easier to hit an airfield because aircraft are there is beyond me... but that´s how it is...

and six Allied DDs being 100% useless again... perhaps it´s just my bad luck, but in this campaign, IJN subs seem to have a magic advantage, not just in attacking escorted ships (unlike mine that attack escorts far too often) but also in sinking the escorted ships... and yes, Hughes ran out of ammo, nothing new here either... the result is an amazing near miss on the IJN sub...

everyone who tries to stay away from major Allied ports with loads of ASW TFs around them is doing something wrong... place all your IJN subs near SF, LA, Sydney, Brisbane and Colombo and you will probably get two dozen shots at Allied shipping a week without having to fear a lot... this should result in the same happy days the German had near the US East Coast, with the difference that there weren´t escorts and I´m using three dozen DDs to patrol around my major ports... without any effect other than being targets for the subs of course...

same here... pretty sure we´ll sink over a hundred ships with our subs in 43 alone... when counting up my attacks so far then we´re probably already around 200 for Mk-14 equipped subs alone and over 90% of the torps have hit the targets so you can imagine what will start to happen in 1/43 when 50% of the torps will work...

as mentioned earlier, IJA recons picked up my Army marching on Tennant Creek some time ago and we´ve now entered the hex South of this base... IJA troops are reported to flee already (3 units) and I doubt we´ll catch them... guess we´ll be able to march all the way to Katherine or Darwin without having to fight... will be interesting if Rainer will fight for Darwin... everything on the way there is clear terrain and Darwin too, so making a stand will be tough, especially as I´ve brought a lot of artillery... hope that the artillery will still have some effect in clear terrain after patch 3... we´ll see...

I´ve upgraded the first squadron to B-24 today... we had an 8 bomber unit coming in as reinforcement and upgraded them to medium bombers in the continental US, a week later we had the 8 B-24 in the pool and we´ve got now our first frontline squadron equipped with the new bomber, stationed at Cairns. Hopefully this unit won´t attack alone all the time and will join the B-17 (got serious doubts about it already). All B-24 in the coming weeks will head to Australia as this will substantially increase the threat to the Japanese around Lae and around the Bismarck Sea due to the B-24 having 3 hexes more range than the B-17 and also carrying 2 500lb bombs more (10 instead of 8 on normal range). Am thinking about sending two dozen B-17 to India to equip the three squadrons there with heavy bombers... on the other hand, I don´t really know what to do with them in India anyway so they will probably just stay in Australia... some 20 B-17E in the pool with 100 on the map (all in Australia)...

25th of the month so it´s time for our sub statistic again...

Allied statistic started 25th Jan 42

Mk-14

total attacks 229
exploding hits 41 (18.98% of total hits)
duds 175 (81.01% of total hits)
miss 13 (5.67% of total attacks)

5 months and 229 attacks from fleet subs. Exploding hits are below 20% which is depressing considering the fact that it should be slightly above 20% with dud rate for torps but salvoes fired and more than the 1 torp hit on average. The hit rate is insane though, we´re still far above 90% of our attacks hitting home. Still waiting to get into 43... [;)]

Mk-10

total attacks 28
exploding hits 13 (76.47% of total hits)
duds 4 (23.53% of total hits)
miss 11 (39.29% of total attacks)

the S-class subs keep showing poor performance. Due to lack of range they more or less never encounter enemy shipping and if they do, they perform just awful. Nearly 40% misses and to top it off 23.53% of duds. Disappointing

53.3cm/45cm/21MkVIII

total attacks 50
exploding hits 19 (76% of total hits)
duds 6 (24% of total hits)
miss 25 (50% of total attacks)

now I haven´t been happy with my Dutch and British subs (probably not more than a handful attacks from British subs in 6 months of the war anyway) and it hasn´t changed so far. 50% miss rate is absolutely depressing, compare this to a 94% hit rate of the US fleet subs. 24% duds is also quite high it seems but I´m not sure about the dud rate set for British and Dutch subs, I thought it would be somewhere around 15%? [&:]

IJN statistic started 25th Feb 42

IJN

total attacks 43
exploding hits 23 (92% of total hits)
duds 2 (8% of total hits)
miss 18 (41.86% of total attacks)

last not least, the IJN statistic. The hit rate went down dramatically lately, this due to the fact that we probably saw a dozen attacks on our DD ASW TFs off Sydney which mostly missed. Hit rate of 58% isn´t great, it has been 73% until a month ago so the unsuccesful attacks on my DDs kicked in here. Nearly no duds but this isn´t surprising. The IJN subs made 17 attacks within the last month.

our Aussie offensive takes it´s first objective... unfortunetely, the enemy moved out exactly this turn when we order the attack... our tank units are ordered to pursue... the main objective of this offensive is Darwin of course, the only thing that could really stop us IMO is supply... if we aren´t able to move supply forward then we have to retreat... I´m in the process of building up Cooktown for example and this base has no road connection to Cairns, only a trail over six hexes. In a single turn we had 65.000 supplies flowing there. 65k in one turn, seems excessive and once again makes me wondering about the supply movement routine... IMO it only really works on a "one base island" because there you can dump supply by ship and it hasn´t to be moved via the routine... Tennant Creek is six hexes away from Alice Springs (72.000 supplies there) so in theory it should be as easy or as "hard" as it´s at Cooktown as we´re both times speaking about six hexes over a trail... I was surprised to see it being that easy at Cooktown and the supply convoy being sent there was ordered to turn back as it wasn´t needed...

then the DDs act as targets again, in return a rare event of scoring a hit and four near misses... this of course meant that the only DD actually attacking the sub ran out of depth charges... I have yet to see three DDs attacking a sub and even two are very rare... an ASW TF of four ships actually only means one or at best two attacking DDs...

the airfield was in a very poor state before this attack already and should now be totally closed again... the airbase damage should have been at 100% for weeks/months as it should have never been repaired... doesn´t help though as we encounter fighters day after day...

we strike back though... North of Tennant Creek our motorized units get a shot at the retreating Japanese infantry units and they are easily dispatched even though also our adjusted av didn´t look good... anyway, we will try to pursue the enemy and this shouldn´t be much of a problem as it only takes two days for a tank unit to pass through a hex but it takes four or five days for an infantry unit...

at least the Zeroes are based at Katherine, I´m pretty sure the Sallies are coming from there too... and once again I can only be totally amazed that the Zeroes were flying LRCAP over nearly 10 hexes to Tennant Creek all the time without suffering any losses... how this is working is absolutely beyond me, must be some funny bonus for the Japanese, while my aircraft drop out of the sky from flying naval search... sure a Hudson III or a PBY is pure crap compared to a technical masterpiece like the Zero... wonder why Hudsons were used as lead aircraft for fighter ferrying for example... my LRCAP attempts were so frustrating (loss wise) that I gave up on it quickly (trying to do it at two or three hexes) and when I look at the 50-60 fatigue my squadrons accumulate from flying Cap over their own base when set to 60% then I can only shake my head about this mega LRCAP the Japanese have been doing... the enemy pilots must be dead to to 1348 fatigue... oh, we can´t get higher than 100... not much left here...

we suffered notable op losses today... only three Catalinas lost today... hey could be worse... I could also lose 5 or six... further reduced the % and range of my nav search ac (Cats and Hudson III) but this doesn´t mean anything... I stand by what I´ve said earlier: naval search, the most dangerous mission in AE... the whole PBY and Hudson III production can not keep up with the op losses suffered during these kamikaze missions...
