Adding pics

Adding pics
I asked before about how to add pictures to DB for HCE. is it possible to add photos by yourself in ANW using the same method?
Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB
It is definitely possible to add images to ANW by yourself without checking or getting permission from AGSI or anyone else. However, there are consequences and complications from doing this. They are not insurmountable, but they can be very awkward and annoying.
I gather from all your questions regarding the database capabilities of ANW that this will be a major consideration for you in the purchase decision of this game. Because of that, you might want to check out the Access-based ANW DB editor (like the HCE one).

You do not need to own the game in order to see what is possible. If you want to actually import a functional database and try out the various functions, let me know and I will set one up in 3.10 format so that you can use it with the Reimer Editor. Otherwise, it will not work.
Also, if you like, I would be happy to walk through the process one step at a time with you so that you can see all the problems you will encounter when someone tries to add images to a database.

RE: Adding pics
thank you for your reply.
I think it is not difficult to understand how to change/add pics once you have done by yourself at least one time.
I dont understand it well, so i would like to change/add one pic in the demo to understand the process, and to evaluate whether i could change /add many of them when i buy the game. I like to see pics of the platforms, and aircrafts with national symbols of the side i am playig. It helps me to be embedded in the game and adds nice flavor to the combat.
To sum up, I dnt have db-access here currently, may you please tell me how to download editors.necessary tools to perfom a change/addition to one in the ANW demo?
thankyou in advance.

That was pretty much what I was trying to suggest. Let's try and get you to do it for yourself and see if works for you or is acceptable for you.ORIGINAL: fulcrum28

Do you know how to use the Microsoft Access program? Do you have that application? If not, I will find a link for the RunTime2003 (the way I currently use it).
RE: Question
thanks a lot!
No, unfortunately, I dont have MS Access program here.

RE: Question
one thing I like from HCE database is that ships and aircrafts are organized by countries. In HCE they seem to be organized alphabetically. However, ANW seems more complete for organizing missions and tactics, expect that grounded forces do not move.
At first glance HCE map seems appealing, however the problem with the zoom makes me like more the ANW, which is also more scalable. I like both, but I would like to buy only one, otherwise it could be too time consuming to have two similar games to play!

Question
You can pick up a copy of RunTime 2003 here:
http://www.alkia.net/index.php/Access-2 ... Alkia.html
Once it is installed, it should allow you to run the Access-based ANW Reimer Editor:
http://computerharpoon.net/public/H3RE_ ... 090717.zip
ANW databases can also be organized according to countries and date of employment. Not all database editors include this information, but the PlayersDB is one of those that do.
See if you can get the Reimer Editor working for you and then we can take the next step of running the editor.

RE: Adding pics
I have a couple of questions.
In matrix site, I could Harpoon ANW screenshots. Where platform picture is displayed i could see the unit photo and some schema representing the place/ship in blue background. in the demo i have, the picture representation is different, does not include that schema and shows the picture is bigger size in a different window. Is it because they are using different database?
You mentioned before the playerDB. Is it different from the one i am using in the demo I think it is ANW 2.1.
How can a different database be played in the game? I also heard about DB2000 etc..it is a bit complicated.
should i download playerDB, save in ANW directory and uploaded in some ini configuration file?
THank you again (I am sorry for so many questions)

I think that I know what you are talking about. It helps to take screenshots to clarify things.ORIGINAL: fulcrum28

There are two methods of adding and managing images in ANW. Images like this:

are stored in individual folders in ANW. This makes them easy to manage and view with the Harpoon Media Widget [HMW] utility.
The other method of image organization is through a collection of images and that are placed inside an *.RES file. I think that this is what you are seeing when you use the Demo. I have attached a sample.
Does it look similar to the attached image? If not, could you please take a screenshot/print-Screen of the image that you see? It would help to know what you are seeing.

The PlayersDB and the DB2000 are third-party (user-created) databases. If you purchase the game, you can switch between databases by using the Configuration Launcher. There is a Database Manager tab that will allow you to switch between them. However, the Demo will not allow you to use any Database but the one supplied with it. Therefore, there is no need for you to get or worry about any other database until you decide to get the game as they will not work with the demo.
If you think of a Database as if it is a dictionary/language and scenarios as documents/books written in that language, it may be easier to understand. Every book/scenario is written with a specific language/dictionary/database. If I tried to read an English book with a Russian dictionary, it would be very difficult. That is why every scenario must be played only with the database for which it was written.

RE: Question
Thank you. The first pic you attach is the kind of photos I see when playing demo. The second photo you attach is the type of pic I see is the screenshots from matrix ANW harpoon. So I was confused about which style of pics I could see when I buy the game.
If you dont mind, may you tell me which game do you enjoy more playing? I assume you have both HCE and ANW, but I think you may like more one of them. It is difficult to choose for me, probably the facts that the map of ANW can be zoomed in quite well, their mission editor, including new coming boarding/assault ships capability, colateral damage, bigger maps, facilities composed of several buildings, hangars, are decisive to be more interested in ANW. However, HCE shows as easy to control and has a good general looking for windows and database access information.

Question
Both style of photos are/can be used in the game. The second photo is the format that started with Harpoon 2 in 1994. It is/can still be used today. The first photo is a new addition to ANW and was released with one of the patches. At this time, I think that it is the default setting/format for the game. If you purchase the game, there is a command that can be issued to switch between the two formats so you can select the one you prefer. Personally, I prefer the older H2 (second photo) format because its use does not mean that the player has to 'drop out' of the game to view the image.ORIGINAL: fulcrum28
So I was confused about which style of pics I could see when I buy the game.
I own and play both versions of Harpoon (ANW & HCE). I will not say which one I enjoy more but, suffice it to say, I have played every single scenario ever written for either H3/ANW or HCE. There are hundreds of scenarios for each version.ORIGINAL: fulcrum28

If you really cannot decide upon which version you like better, AGSI says that it will be coming out with a combined offer:
Harpoon Ultimate Edition

You can decide if it is worth your money or not. Whatever your decision, you will have to live with the consequences.
AGSI's List of * Known Harpoon [ANW] Issues
RE: Question
thank you for your reply. I also prefer the older H2 system to see the pictures. I dont like to exit the game to see the pics.
you attached a list of ANW known issues. Does it mean that HCE has a less number of issues? Currently I feel quite interested in ANW, if I could complete and add pics for planes operated by specific countries it could be excellent. I hope that in new pathes they could include the option to move grounded forces.

Question
HCE has issues, too. However, IMHO, I believe that the problems found in HCE to be generally less severe than those found in ANW. Many of the ANW problems would be considered "game-killers" for me while the HCE ones are more of the "annoying, but tolerable" kind.
You can examine the list for yourself:
AGSI's List of * Known Harpoon Classic Issues
and
HCE
The sooner you are able to use RunTime2003 and the Access-based Reimer Editor, the sooner you will be able to see for yourself if you will be happy with the database functions available to ANW and the limitations caused by them.

RE: Question
Certainly, some of the bugs I read from ANW are important for the game dynamics.
For example:"AAA guns are not limited by the altitude of the target and can even shoot down satellites."...that is too much. I wonder why they do not solve the bugs witn one or two patches as i think these problems can be easily solve by debugging properly the software.

RE: Question
I forgot to mention that my previous experience in naval warfare simulations was in Fleet Command / NSW mod.
Based on your experience on HC/ANW, do you think that these games improve the FC' simulation?

RE: Question
I successfully install ACeess and open the H3RE file. However, when i click on Edit aircraft, all fields are empty. Is it because the DB itself is not upload right? As example, May i upload the DB included in the demo? I would like to try to change a pic by myself.
RE: Question
Is it possible to change the sound for firing cannons are relatively short distance (currently, it is like a informative "beep beep"), but it could be more realistic a gun sound. For missiles, rockets, currently it is ok (sometimes it fails to procude sound though).
RE: Question
I uploaded the DB included in ANW demo. I used edit countries option and I was surprised that no ships are assigend to ITaly, and Spain does not have F-100 Frigates, R-11 P.Asturias aricraft carriers, no F-18 wings etc.. I was surprised, since HCE DB did included them. Maybe I did some mistake (?)

RE: Question
Seems you figured out to Import a database into the editor so you could edit what is there.
It is not easy to change the sounds for the events but if you are interested in providing sounds, I'm interested in setting them up to be used for you.
No mistake. Not every database has every platform. Further, the platforms may not be linked to the country.
