Try adding Escorts and/or PBs to your Landing craft and Barge TFs. You will be pleasantly surprised.

This is critical because

1. It keeps subs from shelling them to death.
2. It keeps them fueled so that they don't go into the gas-free entropy zone and take damage in oodles.

Are PBs exposed to air attack? Or are they ignored, because they are in a barge TF?

Important question, since the whole point of barges is immunity to most Naval Attack

It's hard to say. I would suspect that yes, they are, but are extremely low value targets and would be unlikely to be attacked unless they were absolutely the only thing in the area. I can't say 100% for sure I've yet run into that situation.

Now they do absolutely get strafed along with the barges by bombers doing the 100' naval attack.

My subs love the barge TF's that the AI is now using throughout the Marshalls.  I guess it's trying them because I keep sinking the larger ships with my LBA and CV strikes, but every turn I get a sub or two surfacing to shell a barge or three.  I've got both Tarawa and Makin and now set a squadron of fighters at 100' and naval attack to go after them too.
