Well, the military tend to have a different definition of volunteer to the rest of the general population [:D]

In theory you are a volunteer because when you join up you volunteer to serve in any ship, submarine or aircraft.
I'd have to say that sucks! [:D] In our Navy both flying and submarine duty are volunteer only and you can quit at any time (you won't be happy , but you can quit at any time). The joke is you volunteer twice. And to quit you have to sign the entry on page 13 of your service record. Hemce when you quit , you are said to be "signing your page". And you automatically lose the right to wear your Dolphins or wings (which ever you have).
RE: THE THREAD!!!
Even if you decide to no longer serve on boats you keep your dolphins

RE: THE THREAD!!!
Just to change the subject, has anyone read "Pearl Harbor Countdown :Admiral James O. Richardson" ?
It's pretty interesting. I'd read years ago Richardson's bio "On the Treadmill to Pearl Harbor" , but this book doesn't pull any punches. It really goes deep into the infighting when FDR ordered the fleet moved top Pearl Harbor and Richardson objected (causing FDR to fire him and "deep select" Kimmel). [:)]

Nope. I'm reading Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell. Also reading Pratchett's Unseen Academicals.

RE: THE THREAD!!!
Bet you can't beat laying under an SLBM replacing a limit switch with the North Atlantic x inches below your back through the pressure hull and 16 tons of solid propellant inches from your face.
Been there, done that and the injection temp was 29f on the fast attacking, deep diving, sonar transducing, ecm listening, torpedo firing, nuclear reacting ...USS Suckfish (SSN 637). I don't think we had as much rocket propellant in our subrocs (made by, of all people, Goodyear tire and rubber) but on my first time at sea I actually slept next to one in the torpedo room for a week.

That dates you. ASROC and SUBROC have been out of service for a very long time. And so has the Sturgeon class, let alone the lead boat! [:D]

Reminds me of Private Benjamin. IIRC, she signed up for the Army with the condos and shopping excursions. This oughta be just right for her ilk.ORIGINAL: Mynok

I like it. Sounds like a much smarter fitness training program, along with incorporating input from combat experienced vets. The only part I initially questioned was dropping bayonet training, but if they don't carry them anymore, why spend time training with them?
Interesting....doing yoga and playing tag. [:'(]
Actually, they had better make sure they build endurance as well. Five mile runs might be somewhat pointless but 10 mile marches with full loads certainly aren't.
