Eagles Strike - New Game from HPS

Post by Wild Bill »

I'm pleased to announce my second collaboration with John Tiller in his Squad Battles game, "Eagles Strike," the invasion of Western Europe - USA vs Germany is now available.

The first effort, "The Proud and the Few" covers the island hopping campaigns of the United States Marines from the grim beginnings to the hard fought finale.

Eagles Strike has 30 scenarios, 3 campaigns, both 2D and 3D graphics and a lot of features unique to that war.

It is a squad level type of conflict with smaller, dynamite firefights in both games.

Check it out here, and wish us luck with it.

I'm still die-hard Matrix so I'm not going anywhere. But these games offer a refreshing change.

Congrats WB! I don't think that I will be able to buy it, however. I'm still saving up for CL. :D

Hello Wild Bill,

Congratulations! I have NRC, and five PzCampaign games. But never tried the squad battles system... but this last title seems "irresitible" to me...

How are the Squad battles games compared with the Steel Panthers system? You know, how they manage combat, weapon slots, campaigns&core forces, etc..?

Thanks in advance

To a large degree they are the same, Mikimoto. They follow the same system as in his larger operational games. Knowing how to play those will give you a big head start.

They are turn-based, squad-level battles with an occasional campaign thrown in for good measure. They do not have the sophistication of the SPWAW sound and graphics but the AI is good and a carefully done scenario is challenging.

It sort of reminds you of the old AH ASL (Advanced Squad Leader) games. It has that feel to it.

By the way, its very good to hear from you!

Hello Wild Bill,

Thanks a lot for the quick answer! It sounds that Squad battles games are a "must have" for Steel panthers fans. I'll order it tonight as your words have convinced it is worth the effort. It is great to have more tactical game to play... I am eagerly waiting for Combat Leader, too...

Just put my order in for Eagles Strike. I play/have played both SPWAW/SPWW2/SPMBT and all the Squad Battle series. They are different in their approach & feel but are a good compliment to each other, IMO. Wild Bill is right, if you have played the PzC series, Squad Battles will look familiar in their how they play. I would disagree with Wild Bill, however. I think the graphics in Squad Battles is better than the Steel Panthers games. Hey, to ech his own!

I strongly agree with you BAL. The graphics are much better (keep in mind there's about 7-8 or so years difference between the games) with audio just a bit better.

One item in Squad Battles that I was a bit disappointed in was the way armor for AFVs was handled. Still .... a killer sim though.

Ou-Rah!

THAT IS ALL:

I certainly would not argue with either of you on graphics. That is a personal preference. Actually, I enjoy the "boardgame" feel that it has sometimes.

The game engine is one of the best, and with each new Squad Battles CD, something new is added.

The 3D graphics in this one (first time for SB games) is awesome. I play in 2D but I like to sneak a peek at the 3/4 view sometimes.

Lots of good history included in this one too, in the helps section. You get history and good wargaming...a winning combination. That is how I believe it should be done.

Hello again,

I have ordered one copy, it's done... and I am thinking of buying one of the Vietnam games, too.

By the way, Wild Bill, your historical article for Korsun'44, Watchword Freedom, was an amazing one. I enjoyed reading it so much, you transmited the "desperado feelings" of the germans trapped in the pocket...

Regards and saludos:)

Perhaps you could provide a link to the article on Korsun.

Just a tiny bit, Mike. Thanks for putting the Raider logo out there with the rest of those most respectable sites!

Tell you what, Big Joe 98. I'll have Shaun post it this weekend on the MGO articles section and advise you here when it is up.

Fair enough?

Hello dear Wild Bill,

Finally I have the game installed in my hard drive. It looks really amazing, fun and with deep and rich game mechanics and features. It has certainly an ASL aspect and feel... I'm falling in love with it...

Thank you very much

Regards,
Mikimoto

PS: Continue with this marvellous work, sir... I'm definetively a new fan of the SB series... :)

Thank you Bill for bringing HPS Simulations to my attention. :) I received my copy of Eagles Strike last Wednesday and will be spending a LOT of time playing it. I especially like the 'snapshot' feature (for my future AARs.)

But I've also looked at the other HPS games and am planning on getting Fulda Gap '85, Panzer Campaigns - Normandy and Smolensk '41. I am especially looking forward to getting Smolensk '41 as I have the SPI game Panzergruppe Guderian and am looking forward to playing a PC version of this battle.

Thanks again,
CCB

Just my humble opinion, but you won't be disappointed by the HPS Panzer Campaign & Modern Campaign seres.
