Certainly I must since you have a vested interest in the subject....far more than I do (though I should have more as a Christian). But I'm still curious, because my reading (limited though it is) on the pogroms was that they were very detrimental to the eastern European Jews. Perhaps this was more directed at the Hasidim than the more secular types? Curious as to your views on that.
I do agree that many Jews were Bolsheviks. Not sure that translated so much into many Jews being Soviets. I see a transformation in the 20s and 30s from the Marxism of the revolution into the Soviet structure that was not as accepting of your people.
I'm sorry, but I'm I'm still having a tad of trouble with your terminology. The "pogroms" as a series of events in the late 1800s certainly were detrimental to the Jews. That was a redirection of racial animosity (on the part of the Tsarist government) pure and simple. But what you referred to above as "Stalin's pogroms" was a very different thing. After googling the term I find that it refers to the arrest and execution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, which was a very real event, and one that my family was fairly close to, since my grandfather knew several of the members, including Mikhoels (pardon the phonetic spelling). What it was not, was a racially motivated event. It was Stalin disposing of a tool no longer useful, same as he would have done to Poles, Czechs or Romanians. To his credit, however, the Soviet government under Stalin, to my knowledge, never had a policy of (overt or otherwise) discrimination against Jews.
Whew. This is a very big subject, and I have to run along now. [:D]
A very good day to all.

It gets worse. Today was a "University Holiday". So I only was at work for 8 hours today. It gets worse. Working on my annual "Report of Activities" and "CV" for annual merit review. It gets worse. I probably put in 20 hours on the damn things. It gets worse. We will have a series of meetings over the next four (4!) months for committees to assign scores to all of the sections (6) in the submitter's ARAs. It gets worse. So that my peers-that largely don't know WTF I do-can (mis)judge my work effort. It gets worse. These scores are then used for determining so-called merit pay increases. It gets worse. But, of course, there's no money for any merit pay. It gets worse. But the University is making faculty (and staff) take a 1% pay increase this year. It gets worse. This will be an across the board increase regardless of merit score. It gets worse. By giving us the 1% pay increase, we will be putting our college's budget in deficit to the tune of 2% of annual budget. It gets worse. We have formulated a plan for furloughs to offset the 2% annual budget deficit.ORIGINAL: Onime No Kyo

You guys havent done much today, have you? [:-]
Dude! Its Friday. Workin's so heinous.

"March Madness" is not just rabid dogs and cats, Grollub. It's college basketball playoffs here. Many office workers put together fictitious final 32 or final 16 brackets and bet with coworkers how the playoffs shake out.ORIGINAL: Grollub

Did some more reading and agree. Found a curious bit about Stalin trying to setup a Soviet 'Zion' in the Far East. It hinted at there being something of a debate about which language should be the lingua franca of a new Israel: Yiddish or Hebrew.
That was quite an eye-catcher since I happen to be studying Hebrew right now.....and due to my basic German skills, I can actually pick up a decent amount of Yiddish. [X(][:D]

Birobidjan? [:D][:D][:D]
Thats a good one. [:D]
Birobijan was a colonial state. The intent of its creation was the settlement of immigrant Jews (from the Americas, Europe and the Middle East) in the region to further development and Europeanization of an otherwise rather undeveloped region. But Russian Jews were neither forced nor even encouraged to go. As the subject is not one I have ever focused on, I can only surmise the reasons and details behind the "experiment", but economic development certainly stands right up there. Whereas previously, Siberia had mostly been the destination of convicts, from the Staroveri in the 1600s to the Decembrists and Stalins politicals, a willing group of settlers was rather new. One thing it certainly was not, was a racially motivated "quarantine zone", if that's where you were going with it. In fact, Stalin had set up quite a few of these "racial havens" in undeveloped regions. The Karello-Finnish Autonomy jumps to mind (there is a yiddish joke that goes with that but its rather hard to translate well) as well as several in the Caucasus region.
As for Hebrew vs Yiddish in Israel, the debate is ongoing. Startlingly, Yiddish is not a recognized language in Israel, despite the fact that a dazzling number of Israel's "big names" (Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, Ben-Gurion, etc) were from Russia or Eastern Europe and communicated primarily in Yiddish. Yiddish was, and I think to this day still is, banned in many social settings. I find this startling, first of all because I hate to think what Sholom Aleichem sounds like in Hebrew vs Yiddish, and second, because its tantamount to banning the use of French in Quebec (ok, not the best analogy, but you know what I mean).

This is a ludicrous waste of time seen only amongst people that aren't watching enough pre-season baseball. Opening season is just a couple weeks away, baby!
