I decided to spring for the Avast Internet Security package. All functions with a 2-year licence for $60. Runs like a charm on my new computer, and has made my mother's computer (licence allows installs on three different computers) run much faster than before.
If you want an almost sure-fire way to make your computer run slowly, use different programs for the different security tasks.
How is their free suite?
Not sure there is one. There's an anti-virus program, but no full suite.

Check the sound control panel. Sometimes your sound card shows up as multiple devices and picking the wrong one will mean no sound.
