The next War In Russia?

Post by ladner »

Has anyone heard anything regarding the East Front game that 2by3 is working on? My apologies if this is an impolite topic or a sore point. I have lurked on this forum for a while and have not read of anything new on this topic and there seems to be little activity, if any on the 2by3 web site. I purchased Uncommon Valor, which I have greatly enjoyed, so I am eagerly anticipating a new Eastern Front game with a graphics facelift, and some new game mechanics. On the subject of mechanics, one of the better East Front games was an old title by SSG that I used to play on the C-64 (yep I'm almost a geezer) in which you assigned objectives for your fronts/army but the movement of your armies/corps was not directly controlled by the player. I also recall that the distance covered by the army/corp was dependent upon supply level, leadership and experience rating.

Thought I would take a minute to tell you what I know. 2by3 has a "new WIR" listed on their page. I actually sent an email to Joel Billings some months ago asking him about the status of the project. I didn't save his response, but the gist of it was yes its on our list BUT we have War WITP and a Mediterranean version of Uncommon Valor still to go. Additionally, Matrix and 2by3 have said at this point there is no agreement between them to publish the "new WIR".

I bought UV and will buy WITP and the next UV based game. These are (and will be) good games. That said I am an eastern front grognard and I purchased these games to do what little I can to ensure the "new WIR" is created. The most climatic struggle of any century deserves a new treatment by the man who gave us what, IMHO, is still the best operational computer game around: War in Russia.

Thank you for replying, due to the lack of responses I was begining to think that this was a forbidden topic.

No, not forbidden, just nothing new to say. Since we still have WitP and their Med game to go, it could be a full year before we hear *anything* about the new WIR. Even worse, the fact that 2by3 doesn't have a publisher for it means, possibly, that it might never happen.

Ed,

thanks for the info. Guess, I've been in the dark, the Med game is news to me, sound interesting though. If it is going to be based on the UV engine ground combat will definitely need some tweaks. Thanks again for the information.

I love the Eastern Front not to say that i would love to be on the Eastern front that is:D

Ive been to other Wargaming sites that have wargame polls re what wargames gamers would like to see and the Eastern front always seems to take top votes:)

So there is defenetly a lot of interest.

I play Russo German war which i think in its own style is a very good game but i always return to War in Russia I Love this game and i live in hope as many others that one day we may get WIR2.

I know that this has probably been brought up before. I like probably others would even put some of my own cash into a prodject like this.

Just wondering what other people think about this.

Well keep on Gaming WARGAMMING.

Mike,

welcome to the boards. With respect to your comment of putting cash towards WIR2, in a sense I've done this by purchasing Uncommon Valor (UV), and will most likely also buy War in the Pacific (WitP) when it is completed. Others on this forum have expressed similar sentiment. If you like WW2 naval combat or are interested in the South Pacific theatre, I would recommend UV, of course it would be wise to scour the UV forums, here on the Matrix site to get a better feel for the game.

The good news regarding 2by3 is that UV has sold well, and has recently been republished and I've seen it advertised at Electronic Botique, and available on their web-site. I think this is significant, since originally you could only purchase the game via Matrix's site, even better would be if the game is actually stocked on the shelves.

I'm not sure what to make of Ed's earlier comment that WIR2 does not have a publisher, it seems strange that Matrix would not pair up with 2by3 since they have already collaborated on UV and WitP. Then again Matrix may simple be stretched too thin since Combat Leader Cross of Iron, and Battlefields are also nearing completion. Likewise 2by3 is heavily commited to WitP and the future Mediterranean theatre game, which makes sense since these, I believe, are all derived from the UV engine. Overall, I am optimistic for the future and I hope that Matrix/2by3 are able to recreate the same environment back when SSI was constantly churning out wargame titles.

WIR Battlefront ?

Post by MikeB »

Somewhere/somehow, i got onto the battlefront.com web site and downloaded their latest version of East Front warfare.

It looks somewhat between an operational game and tactical...as it has individual units fighting on a tactical battlefield. It supposedly has a continuous time period to it which is NOT available via download.

While the download looked impressive, One must consider the time commitment. Also, those hexes are a very basic part of gaming. Battlefront puts you into the first person...changing the group you are with and moving your head from side to side to see a different field of battle is a major change. I note that Medieval Total War has the same concept.

I expect to stay with hexes and WIR....though World in Flames and Napoleon (area movement game...cant remember board game name"Struggle of Nations?") will be soon be computerized too.
Time constraints of family and work can be a grind.
