Saving games

Post by Webbco »

Hi, 3 quick questions:

1. Are there a number of slots where we can save our progress?
2. Are we able to save our game whenever we like?
3. Is there an autosave feature?

1) Save as many as you want, your HD size is the limit.
2) Yes. Wherever too!
3) No.

The game defaults to your Documents folder chain. However, once you save to a location , the game remembers where you saved and future saves default to that folder. You can always save to anywhere on your hard drive you want to though. It remembers the last place saved to.

I always save to a place like this:
f:\Matrix Games\Distant Worlds\Saves

Not that it matters. [;)]

I hope there are plans to implement an autosave functionality because IMO it's a must in a non-turnbased game because that runs in real-time because you can get so engrossed that you simply forget to save regularly, happens to me all the time in Paradox games.

That might be a hard feature to implement. Saved games are large, usually around 14 megs. Saving games can take some time if you are in the middle of playing. It would be annoying if it saved lets say every three months. It's different if you're expecting it and waiting.

Is there a quick save or a save shortcut?

No quick save. The only place to save is in the Options menu.

I hope some sort of quick-save can be implemented, at least while the game is paused. I can understand it not being practical if the game is still progressing forward (likewise, I can understand why there's no auto-save), but it would be really nice to have a quick-save ability while the game is paused.

I'm not saying autosave should be forced but why not do like other real-time grand strategy games do and include a choice in the option menu where the player decides how often he wants the game to save?

Be it six months, a year or two years.

If people feel the interruption is annoying they can just disable it.

Crusader Kings does this and its saves can get pretty darned large too(due to having to keep track of a huge number of dead and alive NPCs in all the empires in the game and their respective relations etc), but it's not that big a problem for me.

I don't mean to be rude but I just feel that an autosave feature is a pretty standard feature in games these days, and was a bit dissappointed that it's not even been implemented on an optional-basis.

Heck, I'd be happy if one could just program an optional event that made the game pause every 1 year and ask me whether I want to save my game or not.

Autosave similar to implement in EU is must be for this type of games. If someone wont like it he can disable it but autosave is very helpfull.
