ASW Minefields

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-Playing latest v, Scen.9. If I put a minefield at Victoria, hex 209-51 and hex 204-48(northern tip of Vancouver Isl.) to deny access to enemy SS, will there be any affect on my TF traffic through these hexes?

I.e., will my TFs run into their own minefields, or are they furnished nav. charts?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

Minefields are either offensive or defensive.  If you place a minefield in a friendly base hex, it's defensive and you can enter the hex without fear of hitting the minefield.  If you place a minefield in an enemy base hex or a non-base hex, it's offensive and ships of both sides can hit a mine.  If you place a minefield in an enemy base hex (offensive minefield) and later take the hex, the minefield becomes defensive and you no longer can hit one with your ships (as long as you own the base).

Tell that to my merchant captians...every 3 months or so game time I'll have one stray into a friendly minefield.

You have a much smaller chance of hitting a "friendly" mine, but it will happen.

Will having a ACM in a defensive minefield prevent or lessen the probability of a friendly ship hitting a defensive minefield? What about other mine warfare ships?

No on ACM. Yes on Minesweepers.

Thx...another tidbit to add to my notes. You learn something new everyday. Didn't know this much about defensive minefields and earlier I learned European reinforcement became available in Europe once the War in Europe was over. Now Im thinking in my first PBEM campaign game I tried to invade the home islands with just the Pacific Divisions-that's another one for the mistake column.

I started a campaign against the AI as Japan-that's like learning a new language. The first turn and all the economic stuff you have to learn and tend to is quite a load.

I think the best approach to the game is that what happen in Real life would probably have a chance to happen in the game.

Yes, it happened to me in vanilla several times as well.
