So you saw the movie too? [:D] There was a lot less concern at the time that a carrier commander be an aviator at the time.Halsey got his wings in his late 50's with the promise to Pensacola that he'd never come back or fly a plane again! I don't belive that Fletcher was an aviator. And with all the CV's and CVL's and CVE's rolling off the production line , they would have been hard pressed to give everyone and every TF an aviator with the approriate experince and seniority. [:)]

Supposedly there was something to that. Possibly some tropical malady that Halsey had contracted. I dont claim to be a doctor. [:D]

Yes, Halsey was one of the few, but there were also a good number of younger officers coming up through the ranks. Also, remember that in USN pre-war operational planning, carriers were held to be distinctly subordinate to the needs and actions of the battle line. I bet that carrier officers and flyboys were held at a similar discount by the naval establishment at large (these are just my thoughts, I have no hard data, please dont ask me to cite my sources. [:'(] )

Gnarly would be a synonym for righteous, and an antonym for bogus.  [:D]

Oh boy. CB, do you wanna talk to Mike about this or should I. [:D]
Dude. You.

OK, if I must.

Mike, listen to me carefully. The following may save your life, sanity and public image. Have you ever seen someone act like a Texas cowboy, Jamaican reggae singer or a Jersey Italian, and who was not, in fact a Texas cowboy, Jamaican reggae singer or a Jersey Italian (respectively) without looking extremely silly? Yes, Mike, the answer is "no". Well, the truth of it is, that acting like a CA beach bum will only get you equated with a bad imitation of Keanu Reeve, which is horrific enough in and of itself. Only real CA beach bums can actually pull it off. [:-][:D]

Actually Halsey had shingles , brought on by nervous exhaustion. Prior to the 1940's carrier aviation was subordinate for a very good reason. Until aircraft could carry a 1000lb bon=mb a fair distance , they were pretty much usless at attacking warships. Play a few games of WPO and you'll see what I mean. Prior to the Devastator and the Vindicator , the USN was dropping 500lb pound bombs at very short range. For long range you were talking about 250 lb bombs!

And even with these new aircraft , there simply weren't enough carriers to mass a lot of planes to do something with. But in the mid-1930's things started to change. But you can't take a brand new aviator and fast track him to Admiral over night. It takes 20+ years to grow an Admiral. So if you can't make an Ensign Aviator into an Admiral , you make an Admiral into an aviator. That's why a lot of the early carrier admirals wore observer wings vice aviators. [:)]

How the back/ass area?

The back is improving , and is no problem if I move relatively slowly. Thanks for asking! [:)] My backside has never had a problem , despite Chickenboy's claim to the contrary. [:D] One robin does not make a spring , and one minor victory (his only one thus far) does not win a war. OK , so he killed two of my cruisers. We are still very close in points and I've only just begun to get my heavy units, troops and amphib ships. I expect CB will be very quiet about our PBEM for the next couple of turns! [:D]

If youre winning, youre probably cheating. [:'(][X(]

Despite the unofficial motto of AW's being "If your'e not cheating , your'e not trying hard enough!", I never cheat on a PBEM. Besides , I wouldn't know how. And CB will tell you , I suggested his attack several turns ago. Nice to know somebody listens to me! [:D]

I liked it although I guess a lot of people won't, it's not a game that really falls into any of the usual categories.  I sort of saw the ending coming, I worked out how the killer fitted into the game but not who they were, probably doesn't make any sense but hey-ho [:D]

If people want to criticise it for being a series of QT scenes then they won't get much from it, it's a bit like DAO in that most actions will change something further along the line.

I both agree and disagree. By the start of the war the capability of aircraft versus ships (including carrier aircraft) was already a well established theory. If that were not the case, planes like the TBF would not have been completing development when the war started (first flight was in the summer of 41). Taranto and Operation Catapult were simply proof of concept. And if anything, the USN was behind the rest of the world in development and implementation of carriers and naval aircraft into the operational plans. As you say, by the mid-30s things were well on their way, both in the way of hulls and manpower. So I think we are talking about similar things.

However, whereas in the RN and the IJN naval aviation experts had been in flag rank for years. In the USN, Halsey was pretty much the only one. Your Slew McCains, Bogans and Montgomerys were still captains (EDIT: or stuck in the Bureau of Aeronautics, now that I think about it.). In addition to that, both in the IJN and the RN the "establishment" actually listened to captains. The USN did not.

Also, I cant speak for Japanese planning, but I know for sure that the Brits had very correct (as subsequent experience would show) ideas about the deployment of carriers, their operational cycle and their survivability. I also have reason to think that the Japanese were also thinking in terms of a massed CV on CV engagement. Out of the 3, the USN was the only one that was not. And that, I think, is a reflection of the institutional mentality, not a lack of quality manpower for command.

The bottom line is, Halsey was the only "Carrier Guy" the USN had. I have a sneaking suspicion that if it were the RN, they would have kicked someone like Buckmaster upstairs. Instead, they picked the guy who commanded the Enterprise's cruiser screen. So like you said, they decided that they cant "make an admiral", so they took one that was already there.
