How to get my fleet to attack?

I have about 8 ships in a fleet. I double click on the flagship and they are all highlighted. What I want to do now is tell them to attack a space monster in another system. I can't figure out how to bring up that system and then right click on the space monster to attack it. All I get when I right click on it are choices for ships in that system to attack it, not my fleet. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

What I would do is go to the space monster, then use the "next fleet" button to select the fleet I want (or select it with the fleet icon on the galaxy map before zooming in to the space monster) and then just right click with the red target icon to attack the monster.

What I do is go into the zoom on the space monster bring up my fleet screen and click on the select fleet button and not the go to fleet button then right click the monster. Then watch the beautiful sight of your fleet jumping in and whipping that monster. Cruisers are e
really good at this job.

I would also strongly recommend assigning commonly used fleets/ships to hotkeys for quick selection.

Select an item (e.g. your fleet) and then press Ctrl-<Number>, e.g. Ctrl-0, Ctrl-1, etc. You can then immediately select that item again by just hitting 0, 1, etc.

So in this situation you can go to the space monster and then hit 0 and right-click on the space monster to assign the attack mission.
