Since this thread also discussed resources and colony/mining planning, I wonder when is it worth paying attention to galaxy demand and stocks? Why is this important anyway?

I believe for trade agreements with other races. If something is in high demand in the galaxy and you can gain monopoly on it, your income from trade agreements should explode.

Yes, that's the idea. There are also a few resources for which there is only one source in the galaxy, and others for which there are only a very few sources.

Yep, like that whatever-fruit, which only exists on one single moon as a special given by an artifact. Took me forever to find it and I started out with a demand on it... o_O

My last game where I had something like 50 colonies spread all around I think I had:

2 large ports
4 medium ones
and like 5 small ones.

I had over 500 warships. LOL. It was a logistic nightmare. :) Of course a good half of those warships were old warships that I can't bother to disband because it such a chore to get rid of them all 1 at a time. :(

My newest game is going very well. For the first time ever I have people beggin me for defense pacts. We have this huge large coalition right now of about 5 empires. WOW. :)

And we have this little stinker that is at war with 4 of my allies (before I joined) and I now have him on no trade, and even blockaded one of his fuel resources. LOL. You can see its hurting him too because everyone is growing and he is not.

Still have not seen many planets change hand though. A few battles, but usually the attacker loses.

Well, I am still experimenting a lot. I tried playing a war-oriented race, but my economy strategies don't seem to work well with the new patch. I think I'm just too greedy when it comes to colonies. And yes, it really is a logistic nightmare :)
So I tried a more peaceful approach - Trade empire and expand, expand, expand. I have about 40 colonies, most of them still young, and get around 200k income. I am only playing with 4 other empires in a huge galaxy, so I haven't come across any of them, but my economic power should be so high that they will probably instantly dislike me (you get a negative standing with empires who think you are too powerful).
