Thinking of buying the game.

Post by manticoran7 »

first off, I've been fallowing this game since December and am glad to see that indy developers are still around. I would like to buy this game but the crashes being reported have me concerned especially when on the newer OS like Vista( I use Vista) and windows 7. I'm hopping to hear from some Vista users and Erik to see what they think. On a posative note, I like the Dev Support Distant Worlds is getting so I'm more willing to buy

We believe we've solved the vast majority of crashes with v1.0.2. Any that slipped by will be resolved with the next update. As far as Vista / 7 goes, I can only say that my Vista system is my main play system for Distant Worlds and I have no problems with it there at all, it's extremely stable and runs smoothly. I also play it on XP and have tested it on our Windows 7 test systems. Some of our testers were running 7 without any problems.

Some issues seem to be system specific rather than game specific, as we did not see them at all before release with our internal and external pool of test systems, so all I can say is that whatever comes along we will be on top of it and will be fixing everything that we can until we don't have any more such reports.

I'm running the game on Vista and Windows 7. Had 2 crashes in about 10 hours of gameplay pre beta patch. Since downloading patch I've been playing for about 3 hours without a hitch. I'm hopeful crashing isn't going to be a problem since the beta :)

Just curious, how much memory do you have to the OP? I have nothing but trouble playing games on Vista till I had 4 Gigs of Ram. So if playing on Vista, I say nothing less than 4 gigs of ram. Games seem to run faster on Windows 7 now that I have it. I only played DW on Windows 7.

Both crashes I had were on Windows 7, which has 6 gig ram. But that was where I was mostly playing DW. The Vista computer has 2 gig ram and has played DW for a couple hours pre beta without a crash, and now for 3-4 hours on the beta without a crash. I think the CTD were more related to an error fixed by beta patch than an individual computer, but I'm no expert.

I've had a few non-critical errors pop up in my time playing, so thankfully, there were no lost saves to cry over. The game itself runs pretty well!

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit and haven't had a crach yet, but it's fair to say that other people will have got much further in the game than I have...I've only just finished the tutorials and started and stopped a couple of times...so I haven't got very deep into it.

Memory or HD space? I have 3GB of RAM a lot more in HD space

I bought it yesterday and its a pretty good game. Has a very large learning curve and still learning things. Once they fixed the econ bug that fixed that issue.

Now my issue is that I can't seem for the life of me try to figure out how to handle a war. When the AI handles your fleets and attacks (it ask you first) it does stupid things that get your core worlds like your home world lost.

Starting to think that if you set the AI up though. Have a fleet waiting in your home sector area and they attack you can wipe them out that way. But I still have to work on that.

This is facing an AI that is about = with you. AI that is well below you will just raid you and really can't get an upper hand on you. But some = or at least 75% or your power will run you over under AI control.

But once you figure it all out you will enjoy it. LOL.

I'm having a hard time liking the game but it's because I don't like things happening all over the place. While I focused on one thing, something critical is happening somewhere else. I'm willing to give it more time because of all the great reviews players are giving it.

I agree, it can be overwhelming, but I learned early to pause, pause pause. It gets better the more you play. I played more in a smaller galaxy in sandbox mode (no victory conditions).

I still think this is about the finest 4X space game I have played, tried pretty much all of them. I absolutely love the sheer size and scope of DW.

I prefer to play DW at 0.5 speed.

Windows 7 64 bit. No crashes.

Kid, et. al,

Are you playing at 0.25x or 0.5x speed with all the auto-pause pop-ups on? If not, you should as it will help you get used to things. Look at it similar to your first turn in WITP, once you get past that and figure out where everything is, it should start to click. From that point you know what's going on normally (trade routes = CS convoys and such) and you just need to pay attention to your fleets, colonization, construction and the occasional events.

Regards,

- Erik

I use XP with SP2. Zero CTD so far. Stable and smooth. Have some problems on first with music but now is ok.

Actually I was afraid when I see how many mechanic issues is there but now I see that staff is doing their work.
Game still can use many improwments both on mechanic and gameplay but it is good to see that poeple work on this game and make fixes.

Cheers on NZ.
