Bombard enemy troops on planet prior to invasion?
Bombard enemy troops on planet prior to invasion?
Probably just me, but I haven't been able to find any way to bombard an enemy planet, either to destroy facilities or troops, prior to invasion with my own troops. This, of course, can be essential, particularly when invading home planets with large numbers of garrison troops. Anyone else have success? What good are these bombard weapons if you can't bombard? Bombardment is indeed bombardment of the whole planet. But you should also post this in the master wishlist thread.

I would not like to see troop bombarding. The game has a good design choice. You either get the planet by invasion or loose the population and planet quality by the easier bombarding.

Fine by me, but I can't get my ships to bombard anything, period. I attack the planet and they just sit there. Speaking of which, why don't fleets engage enemy ships automatically when they are in range?

Have you got weapons that can do bombard damage? Starting game tech has no bombard damage.
Fleets will not attack if not automated.

Yes, of course I made certain of that. I even created ships that only included bombard damage weapons, thinking there might be a conflict issue. They still just sit there when ordered to attack the planet.

Ok, bombardments were working pre-release (you can watch one in the combat video). Are you seeing the planet quality and population drop at all? Are you perhaps missing the actual bombardment animation? I guess my next question would be can we see your save file please?

Yes its quite true that many battles, in history, for example, have been won due to 'AirSupport'[8|]

I actually try to bomb indies colony to death but I can make my bombers throw their bombs at them.
RE: Bombard enemy troops on planet prior to invasion?
My question is that when you invade a planet where do you look to see the progress of the invasion.. Or if the invasion is even going on.
Right now the planet either does not turn,, or it does.. Its like you have to guess if its working right now or not. Must be something Im missing.

RE: Bombard enemy troops on planet prior to invasion?
I have noticed as well that bombard does not work at the beginning.
For example, I had no troops loaded, then when I cleared an enemy planet of defenses there was no bombard option.
So I went back to load troops, dropped my soldiers off fine, and after they had no chance to conquer I was able to bombard.
BTW- Love the bombard effects where your screen shakes and the planets is pockmarked with scars. Talk about satisfaction.
Can I recommend one things though where the bombard penalty can be reduces, because I even had mutual defense allies cancel everything and trade sanction me. I think this is extreme, because the other race forced me to war dec him. =-P

Planetary bombardment got included fairly late in the process, so it's not very well documented. Apologies for that.
To kick off bombardment:
1. select either a ship or a fleet with bombard weapons
2. when zoomed in to system/planet level hover over the target colony and hold down the SHIFT key. The mouse pointer should change to a nuke icon. Right-clicking will initiate bombardment
3. when zoomed out to sector/galaxy level hover over the system with the target colony in it and right-click for a pop-up menu. Select the Bombard option from the menu to initiate bombardment
We'll get this included in the Galactopedia soon...

RE: Bombard enemy troops on planet prior to invasion?
My main issue with bombardment is: why bother? The game rewards taking over enemy populations, glassing a planet and starting over from scratch just isn't that attractive. You also need to design a whole class of ships especially for this single purpose, as bombardment weapons are useless for any other task, and I don't particularly relish adding yet another ship class just for this niche.
