OT: Looking for another war game

Lately I been given some down time and don't want to over play AE, can anyone recommend another fantastic matrix war game?

Apart from that COG EE or FOF are both excellent.

COG - Crown of Glory. Napoleonic game

FOF - Forge of Freedom. American Civil War

BOB - Battle of Britain plus 1943 -45 European air strategic bombing campaign.

Loved USAAF (SSI on the Apple) which was BTRs father (or maybe grand-father). Hate BTR. Micro-management is a killer in that one, although in all fairness I haven't played it in years so I couldn't say what the patches fix. Same with Fighter Command and BoB (again its grandfather is MUCH better for the same reasons).

Most solo games get very old very quickly for me so I try to stay with games that are fun and easy pbem.  If your looking for a solo game then definately go for Battle of Britian/Bombing the Riech.  Very intensive game will take up much time.  I wouldn't go with Forge of Freedom, Ageod did a far better game called AGEOD American Civil War.  Which you can buy thru Matrix for 19.99.  Very fun solo but a must have pbem game.  Turns are quick and easy but leaves you lots of options for strategy.  Another fun game which is old school is Close Combat Series, these are a blast for quite a bit of time if you have all the settings on hard.

If quicky pbem games then go with AGEod's Wars in America, and American Civil War.  Strategic Studies Group games sold here on Matrix are alot of fun pbem.  I would put them in middle ground for intensity of play with pbem.  Some of these are Korsun Pocket, Across the Dneipr, Kharkov Disaster on the Donets, Normandy, Battles in Italy.....all WW2 games.

well I thank everyone for their ideas, I was told I have 1 more week of work overseas then come back home, I was pushing well over 80 hours a week for last 14 weeks, be nice to drink a beer and go back to the beaches of florida for a change. I am curiously looking at BoB, and war in the east, think ill study both a little more.

Another fun game which is old school is Close Combat Series, these are a blast for quite a bit of time if you have all the settings on hard.

This is a great game, but if you play it only with the single player you will get bored with it fairly soon. I've played a number of the older games in the series (not that it really matters that they are older, AFAIK the newer games are remakes of the older ones without fundamental changes to AI) and the AI just throws it's troops away (hard just means it's got more troops to throw away). It's completely inept at attacking and constantly counterattacks when it should be defending. 90% of the battles can be won by deploying your forces in a good position, waiting 2/3 of the game until the AI bleeds itself dry and then counterattacking. If you can find a good opponent though, it will be lots of fun. Especially CC 5, it has heaps of good mods on various battles.

I'm still a big fan of the Close Combat series. You can even play a campaign against a human opponent broken down into 15 minute battles. It's not really strategy but a very good representation of squad based combat.

Didn't play it for quite some time as I'm too occupied with AE at the moment but I'll certainly get back to it sooner or later.

Andy Mac I´m a big fan of 4x games. Compared to others (like the venerable failed MOO3 and GalCiv II)

Along with AE, the Panther Games series are the best thing in the Matrix catalogue. Now I really enjoy AE, but it is part of the genre of computer wargames that's still stuck in the past; the old boardgame world of hexagons and counters. Highway to the Reich and Conquest of the Aegean are the future of computer wargaming. Also fun games with a challenging AI.

War in the East is going to be a monster and should be a good PBEM game. It's going to be a lot different that WitP. You'll be pushing around larger armies. I suspect that unlike WitP where you don't have as many who will take on the challenge of Japan, I don't think you'll have a problem finding alot who will playe Germany in WiE. Either side should be interesting

I have BOB/ BtR as well as the original. The manual from the original was excellent. I haven't played BOB/BtR much. It is a clickfeaat and the interface could have used an overhaul. It also was a little sluggish switching between screens, but the latest patch fixed that. It still hard to read the graphics-the interface looks almost the same as the original from the 90's when Talonsoft released it.

Fortunately some are workin on mods to clean up the map, interface and re-doing the aircraft icons to make them proportional and easier to view. When that gets done I'll give it another try.

I think i will keep an eye on War in the East, I was looking for a good Battle of Britain with a WITP type setup, I really wish we could push for a War in Med mod, that would really be interesting to see later on.

I used to be huge fan of Close Combat 1-5, even got Cross of Iron which was a great upgrade to Close Combat 3 where you can buy your troops, train them up and play from 39-45, however PBEM seems to be stuck with guys that lose 2-3 maps and bail. So lately I been playing only AE and Falcon 5.0.

Really wish they made a decent world war 2 flight simulator, only one I know of is Aces High, but few weeks playing it, the fan base is terrible collection of gamers.
