Some gameplay questions/issues

Post by PDiFolco »

In my games I had some situations I couldn't really manage by lack of information or ignorance.. In no particular order :
1/ Didn't manage to get the research bonus of a supernova wherever I put the base... Inside the (big) "ring", outside, nada...
2/ There doesn't seem to be anywhere a means to list "scenery" bonus locations, apart of selecting and looking at each and every location (as rare planets have hefty bonuses...)
3/ "Edit" ship design sometimes work, sometimes not, I've never found out why...
4/ How to disband a fleet except by removing each and every ship out of it ??
5/ Why aren't default mining bases design equipped at least with a couple blasters to fend off weak attacks ? OTOH resort base design has a zillion guns !!
6/ Are "latest designs" (checkmark on the design screen) and "obsolete" (on the ship edit screen) the same thing ? To me that's different notions, I can make a fast destroyer then an armored one, without any being "obsolete"..
7/ The manual is wrong about which planet type can be colonized by a race, it gives Human ability only, other races have other planet types. It's indicated in the race description... But ingame I didn't find any means to access what you can currently colonize with your starting race ability + tech + conquered races, so it's rather confusing.

1) Not sure on that one.
2.) Press F12 on the galaxy map i believe.
3.) That means you have designs already existing of that type, you can't edit a design that has ships already built of that type.
4.) Again not sure on that one but considering you have to do each ship individually to get them to upgrade to latest designs that probably true.
5) To save on maintenance just pause the game and redesign your bases to your desire, just be ware of maintenance costs.
6) Latest designs means latest components if i understand what you are saying, and obsolete means ship designs that you updated and the ai marked as obsolete.

If you select the Galaxy view (F12) or the galaxy icon (right above the shipbuilder icon) you can see all this info. Its in a drop down list.

I missed this for 3 games. Found it last game and its about the most important thing in the game to find things like Scenic areas, etc.

There needs to be an Option for deleting old designs and/plus old design ships still active.

Hunting down 20 1st design Escorts to get rid of them is painfully slow. And even if you do Update to newer designs they still carry the "Old" name I think. At least it sure seemed that way.

When Independents get to Empire status It generally results in Mixed systems. Maybe having a Join Our Empire option would be good? Otherwise you have to "conquer" them and your Reputation takes a Hit.

Later in the game when you have 60+ colonies and you have the pop ups checked, they stutter and come so fast as to become worthless. So I have to turn some of them off. Trivial item for sure.

How do you send a Constructor to a ship or base that needs repaired? I have Not figured that out yet.

And if Mining bases and ships are part of the Private sector why do you find several of them sitting around various colonies doing nothing?

Short list for now. More will surely follow.

1, Are you sure there was a bonus, I've found some that had 0 bonus.
2. Yep the Galaxy map, select scenic locations under view.
3. Cromy is correct, just use the copy as new if you want to change sometime or use upgrade button.
4. Go to the Ship and Bases screen, filter the fleets, click the top ship of that fleet, hit shift and use the arrow keys to highlight all the ships in that fleet. Go to the set fleet box and choose none. You can also create fleets this way. Much easier then clicking ships one by one. [:)]

5. Don't know, but good idea to add laser. [:)]
6. Unchecking the latest design box just shows all ship designs. The obsolete box just tells the ai to not build that design.

I'm going to use the topic to ask specific game play questions. How do you repair a damaged ship?

Thanks

with on board repair components or with construction ships, just select the construction ship and put the cursor on the ship till it turns into a hammer and click it.

Another question, I had a satisfactory rating in diplomacy and now I'm of dubious standing. I was wondering why? I didn't attack or back stab another empire, yet. I can't remember if I said no to one of their offers, I usually trade, may dicker a bit, but usually trade. The only thing I remember doing is sending a fleet out to destroy a pirate base. Any Ideas why I'm now a dubious character?
