To stop parked ships using fuel

Post by Duckfang »

I haven't tested this extensively, but putting energy collectors on your ships so that the Energy Collected exceeds Static Energy Use seems to prevent your ships gobbling up all their fuel while parked. The few ships I used them on, this seemed to the case.

I haven't seen any other posts mentioning this (but lots of posts complaining about fuel use when stationary), so I thought I'd go ahead and post it. Anyone else noticed if this works, or am I just imagining things?

If this works, you my friend, are savior of the Federation! Damn pirates live in such a crappy place my ships run out of fuel before we even get there [:D]

Energy collectors work only when ship is not moving, so your fleet wont notice the change, Deto :)

However adding EC is a good way to prevent ships from consuming fuel while being stationary. EC on constructors are even more efficient as constructor spends most of its time being 'stationary' while building things (it should be stationary at least).

It would be good to have on ships that often are stationary, like the anti pirate fleet. They are for the most part stationary until needed :) The constructors usually have enough fuel and have to return to base for materials regardless when building stuff. Maybe if you have supply problems and the construction time gets very long.

Ahh so my idea of putting EC's on a starbase as a forward refueling base not dependant on a Gas Giant would work?

It IS dependant on being stationary and a sun though :)

That is good because it opens up more possibilities some systems only have frozen gas giants, or no planets, and just a sun =-)

Well, one thing though. The EC's does not create fuel, only eliminates the fuel need of the station.

Yes, energy collectors will work to meet energy requirements when a ship is stationary.

If I design a ship with a few docking bays and a gas mining component could it then mine fuel from gas giants and have fleet ships dock to it in the field?

I'd think so - that's just what a refueling ship is.

Well I don't get how refueling ships work. I see nothing in thier inventory. The only way I could get them to refuel was being stationed at a star. I forget the name at the moment, the name of the activity that the refueling ship is supose to do at a star. If it isn't stationed at the star nobody can refuel, but if it is stationed, ships can refuel then. But I don't see it harvesting anything. Also it has to be a star with resources since I couldn't do anything with a star with no resources.

So how are these ships suppose to actually work? I thought I could station it in the middle of nowhere and have my ships refuel, but I see this is not the case Am I using the wrong ship or what?

Can you use the galactopedia? Look under resupply ships and get the answer.

You don't have to be such an arsehole to him.

Davor - You need to make sure you're ordering the resupply ship to Deploy at a gas giant or gas cloud that contains the gas your reactors use as fuel. Once it gets there it'll take 30 seconds or so before its status changes to DEPLOYED, and you can then order your ships to refuel at it by selecting the ships and right-clicking on the deployed resupply ship.

Yes I have done this. I saw this 30 seconds thing, and then I realized it takes 30 seconds to deploy. It didn't work the first time, but worked the second time. But then didn't work the third time. I would click on the star with the resources and click on deploy, it would go there, but then stop. It wouldn't deploy. After a few minutes, I told the ship to go off to the side of the star, and then redo it. It took me a few times to try out. This was with 2 differernt ships. Maybe it was a bug. I remember reading after the fact that Erik said to cancel the order and issue an order to travel to a point away from the star and then bring it to the star and then issue the deploy while in the star.

Thanks duckfang, I keep forgetting that I need to click on my ships and then right click on the resupply ship its self.

Yes but the refueling ship doesn't work if its fuel levels drop below half.
