Erratic retreat behaviour

I have noticed that when units retreat from incoming fire, they do not always retreat *away* from the threat. Often, they would retreat at a right angle from the axis of fire or sometimes even closer to the attacking unit!

For example: I was playing the Kokoda trail as the ANZAC and in the jungle there are often fights when two ennemy units are adjacent to each other. It happened several times (on both sides) that the fleeing unit would retreat in the hex of its agressor.

I have been playing the game since v4.0 and this behaviour has been happening on all the versions since then (I'm on v4.4 now).

I don't know if this can be characterised as a bug, but do other players have the same problem?

As far as I can tell, units retreat towards their edge of the map. That can become a minor annoyance if the opponent has special forces or recon forces behind your lines or if a scenario is set up as a North - South battle. But I would not say it is a big problem. People tend to act pretty irrational when panicking...

I once asked the same question. Wild Bill told me the units will retreat towards the sides of the map, where retreat hexes are supposed to be. But, if the unit is boxed in, they will go where they can until they surrender or are wiped out - I've had them dance back and forth to the last man. In very rare instances, the game designer may have placed the retreat hexes on the top or bottom of the map (they're not supposed to do that) but this is highly unlikely. Enjoy the opportunity for more shots!

Retreat is NOT an option.

I usually play WWII campaign, but recently I started playing the what you might call scenario-driven Motherland campaign, and I have seen a distinct difference in retreat routs that identify with what is being said here, though there's none of that in the WWII campaign.
