Obsolete designs chosen by the AI?

Post by Shark7 »

Anyone else seeing this? You design your own ships, mark the default AI ships as obsolete, and when you have suggest ships on, the AI still chooses to build the obsolete vessels?

Are the new designs over your maximum size limit?

I accepted an AI suggestion to build a bunch of ships only once in my current game. The designs were hand-drawn by me and carefully tuned to not go over any limits. I think that what the AI chose were actually obsoleted ships (Troop Carriers and a couple of Frigates or some such), but by now I am not so certain I am not imagining things. I never accepted an AI proposal ever since.

What I am not imagining is that constructors continue to build obsolete Research Station designs. The new ones aren't over any size limits either. I have seen a report on this forum regarding constructors also choosing obsoleted Mining Stations. I have a few modernized ones in my empire, but am not sure whether these were all hand-ordered, and whether constructors on autmation are still building the old ones.

All of the Reserach or Mining Station designs are hand-drawn, if that makes any difference. Usually I would use the 'Update' button to quickly get to a current component base, then tweak the design by hand.

No, they are within limits.

I believe this is a bug, do either of you have a save you could upload that shows this in action? If so, please upload it per the instructions in the Tech Support sub-forum and post a message there letting us know what to look at.

Erik, I haven't tried it, but I believe this also applies if you delete the original design.
I made a test last night, trying to get my head into efficient ship design. When I redesigned all my military ships, I didn't just mark the original designs as obsolete, but I deleted them so they wouldn't clutter my list.
Even though they were deleted, the AI still suggested building them. I didn't accept the suggestion, so I am not sure if it would really have build the deleted ships, but I can do this again and upload a savegame for you if that should really happen.

I can have one for you later today, I'll also do a real bug report on it as well.

After playing some more, this seems to be less of an issue than I thought. The AI is making a good choice, by choosing the best ship available to it to build. Unfotrunately, this may not be the newest design, nor might it be the design I prefer.

For example, to fill my low end needs (IE Quantity not Quality) for simple patrols, I make some cheap, barely capable Escorts. Now these are not going to stand up to much, but they are enough to keep the bad guys busy until a real ship arrives. However, the AI correctly decides that these aren't the best ships and chooses a better design. So for the low end needs, I will have to set build queues manually.

Might also have to do with available material for components, maybe?

I have occasionally caught the AI building designs that I do not even HAVE. Like for no particularly explicable reason, despite the fact that my research is capped for life, it will choose to try to build an energy research station next to an inferior research site...I don't even HAVE energy research stations! They aren't even an actual design!
