Conquering Alien Worlds
Conquering Alien Worlds
Is it possible to destroy an enemy population and then colonise a world?

Yes, if you have bombardment weapons on your ships you can bombard an enemy world to wipe them out. Be warned, you will damage the planet's quality doing this! Sometimes it is worth it though.

And become the most evil threat the galaxy has ever known, so be careful, you'll want to be sure you are ready to fight a 19 front war if you do bombard.

Anything is better than letting those alien creatures live on what rightfully belongs to the empire. Besides, this ability may help fix another problem.

To be more specific, I believe if you have bombardment weapons you can hold shift when you put the cursor over the enemy planet and you should get a nuke icon. Right clicking then will allow you to bombard the enemy.
RE: Conquering Alien Worlds
A bombardment dammaged planet's quality will slowy recover over time.

I still fail to see the point in ever bombarding. All races will hate you and you lose planet quality and population. This makes the bombarding weapons not very attractive and I would never pick the race whose special tech is a bombard weapon! There needs to be some advantage to bombarding to make it more attractive...

reminds me of a quote from babylon 5 "only an idiot fights a war on two fronts. and only the ruler of idiots fights a war on twelve fronts." I htink it was Londo.

Cool, I'm going to watch that series soon.

It was demanded before release a lot,but we did not know the huge buffs, forced migration and zero negative consequence from having alien scum in your empire.I would like to see Bombarding be more important, like huge buffs for pure races, more unrest for mixed empires, ect. It does seem pointless in the game.I also think it kinda kills the race lore for xenophobic races.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way. Kind of ruined my game. I wasn't even trying to kill the civilian population but wanted to kill the nearly 20 armies on the planet. Unfortunately, even though I didn't wipe it, I killed enough civilian population that everyone hated me. I would think that there would be an option to target military organizations which would significantly reduce the amount of civilian population that would be killed.

Yes, I think a xenophobic race could be encouraged to play xenophobically by allowing it to bombard with out reducing planet quality and/or having a production bonus by having planets with only their species. They'd still receive a bad rep from other species (who would obviously fear for their own safety) but xenophobic AI species behavior would still have (from the AI's perspective) advantages.

A xenophobic race does not have to mean an aggresive race. A xenophobic race could be passive and cautious.

RE: Conquering Alien Worlds
aliens are GOOD, they let access more planet types and they give you a racial bonus to your empire... every alien you add adds another racial bonus for you. (% improvement to one of the core statistics in the game).
I have found though that some planets are neigh unconquerable... i keep on dropping troops and they all die... don't know why. i just ended up convincing them to be subjugated to me and call it quits.

@taltamir, I think that's been pointed out as maybe a bad thing
There are no disadvantages, which might not be a good thing, it might need considering to add disadvantages to having certain races within your empire

RE: Conquering Alien Worlds
Bombardment is self defeating on both the diplomatic and economic level. There's no percentage in it at all in this game and it punishes you for it.
Population is a resource. Alien populations bring benefits to your empire. A blasted out, radioactive husk that needs to be resettled from scratch is nothing but a drag on your economy.
Modest proposal: make planetary bombardment counter the effects of war weariness on your own population to some degree. (They like seeing the bugs get fried!) This would actually give you some kind of incentive to do it, because right now it's a non starter except for people hopelessly into role playing.

Would only make sense for "Evil" type empires... which already have lesser war weariness
"Good" Empires like life

and Neutrals wouldn't care either way lol
Of course, thats only if you're bring morals into the discussion

Edit: Personally, I think it should be used more to damage troops, infrastructure and maybe demoralize populations
And can only damage troops, because, if able to destroy them, troops would become worthless as players would just kill them from orbit allowing easy invasions

why? diversity is good and all that shaz...
besides, nuclear bombardment is a bad idea IRL too if you want to CONQUER.
there is one disadvantage though. races get pissy when you are at war with their race, if you have a lot of various populations then they are all really upset and you get rebelling planets due to any war (which planets are rebelling depends on which race you fight).
that being said, there is no reason why bombardment makes everyone attack... me nuking planets is not a good incentive for tiny pissant empires to declare war on me, its a good incentive for them to lick my boots... only the more powerful empires should go to war over that.

only way to have low war weariness is to find way of ancients or path of darkness... both of which really don't matter at all to your alignment... you should go around killing pirates to have a "good" alignment... even if evil.. because it makes your citizens happy and other empires willing to deal with you. Evil should pretend to be good.
which actually works out quite well as is

Hiroshima argues otherwise. So does the Allied strategic bombing campaign. The good (?) guys are totally ok with this sort of thing under the right circumstances. Democracies at war are fearsome and the public will cheer for blood.
