Not surprising, Rainer had his 6 divisions on pursuit after he kicked my out of Katherine easily. I was sure he would catch me and first forgot about transferring my bombers to Alice Springs again as I´ve thought I wouldn´t do much damage anyway. The bombers arrived and were immedietely ordered to strike the enemy. The damage done was amazing the end result is even more surprising! The enemy troops are now marching NORTH! [:D] He had the chance to completely wreck my Australian Army if he could catch my troops and my 4E bombers saved the day for us... [:)]

luckily most of my bombers attacked with the first wave, therefore the casualties looked quiet high in one attack... 4 or 5 piecemeal attacks that would have resulted in the same total number of casualties could have looked completely different...

even if I don´t like it, I have to keep up some pressure elsewhere on the map than just around New Guinea, therefor I´ve ordered my two Lightning squadrons to attack again. Two squadrons means a split up strike into two strikes of course but that´s not even worth mentioning anymore in AE. Instead of attacking right into the base where the enemy fighters are based, we have reverted to attacking leaking Cap. This at least has saved us from a 1:8 vs the Tojos... 1 Tojo and 3 Oscars reported shot down during the replay, also one P-38 confirmed lost...

here comes the second squadron, why shouldn´t they attack together... would be stupid to do so... to my surprise another Tojo was shot down with some more Lightnings damaged... the end result isn´t something we can really afford as we lose again 4 Lightnings for 8 enemy fighters destroyed (if we can trust the loss list, which I doubt). Add in the fact that probably at least halve of the enemy pilots survive and the fact that the enemy produces 5 or 6 times more Tojos than we get Lightnings and it´s only a loss/loss situation..[:(] we achieved a kill rate in our favour at least if we add in the Oscars which are only garbage at this stage of the war...

this one I wasn´t happy about... I have to take a closer look at my convoys going to Adak... the TF unloaded there and also headed out during the turn which meant it was still in range of Vals during the day... the result was bloody for both sides... we had only 3 P-39 from leaking Cap which I first thought would achieve nothing but they proved to be quite uber for the Vals, downing 7 or 8 of them... didn´t really impress the rest of the Vals as they killed nearly the whole TF... two transports sunk immedietely while the third one is moderately damaged...

we´ve got ships at Adak too (the majority in the area) but only a small strike decided to attack my shipping there... would not have been a good idea anyway... all three Vals were shot down, bringing the total to nearly a dozen today... the Japanese could have needed some escorts today, we haven´t lost a single aircraft...

judging from the disaster for the unescorted Vals yesterday, looks like Rainer wanted to take care of my Cap today... the result was totally off, due to the fact that we had the never ending dive, the enemy was shred to pieces... for not one loss A2A we took out a whole Zero daitai, doing this with Warhawks and Airacobras flown by 70 skilled pilots... I seriously doubt that the enemy pilots were green, there´s just no reason why Rainer shouldn´t have veterans flying his fighter aircraft... what an off result IMO... it favours me, but this doesn´t mean I would like it... while you can discuss kill ratios of 5:1 or 6:1 to death, IMO you´re not sane if you think 23:0 is reasonable... [8|] needless to say that this is also not something that is making my opponent happy... even if the loss list isn´t accurate, taking down the enemy sweep at 18:0 isn´t really worth a comment either...

I really can´t believe it... this is the third sub attack on one of my carriers, resulting in the third success for the IJN subs... pretty much shows again how impotent my DDs are in guarding my capitol ships... it just sucks... this TF has got 10 DDs, two 4 DD ASW TFs following, another CV TF in the hex with another 10 DDs, two SC TF with 8 DDs. In total 44 DDs around my 6 CVs in the middle of the hex, all TFs following each other. Oh well... at least it´s Indomitable that was hit, the carrier is scheduled for withdrawel since early July and I´ve not withdrawn it due to the Milne Bay operation and due to the fact that Saratoga was still in San Francisco´s shipyard at that time. The plan was to have the Milne Bay invasion see a succesful ending and Saratoga arriving in the area to replace Indomitable. I´ve spent 65 pp per day due to not withdrawing the carrier, now the ship is heavily damaged by a sub... While I doubt the ship is in danger of sinking, it´s not combat ready again anytime soon and is out of the war. She will be withdrawn and won´t come back until very late in the war. A pity, two Sea-Hurricane squadrons are worth their weight in gold if you compare them to Wildcat squadrons. Damn IJN subs and damned die rolls as the IJN subs keep attacking my capitol ships at will when one of my TFs stumbles over them, while our subs keep attacking escorts. Doing this with duds...

if you wonder what my fleet is doing near Milne Bay again, we´re bringing in the engineers en masse to build up the base, big amount of supplies and all the fragments that weren´t unloaded during the invasion...

I-23 was spotted yesterday and an ASW TF was sent out of Sydney on a hunt... the result is of course that the sub attacks our ASW TF instead of the other way around, we´re just lucky that the hit rate vs. escorts was reduced with the latest patch, otherwise we would have lost more than a dozen DDs near Sydney alone to subs. In return though we´re succesful today, three hits and lots of near misses show the sub as heavily damaged. Not sunk though, the sub was later that day spotted two hexes further North by a radar equipped Hudson III on nav search...

see below how Indomitable looks like... the single torp caused serious damage, another one could have been critical already... we´re not exceeding 50 damage in total so the carrier will be withdrawn now... Saratoga will replace her soon...

and today´s air losses. The Zeroes even managed to down 2 B-17s A2A today. We´ve also lost another two Hudson III that were flying naval search 60% at normal range... wonder why I haven´t lost the usual PBY also... our carrier based fighters took down a Glen near Milne Bay...

29 mines cleared

sub laid mines I guess... no more mines reported to be there... I´m still not used to the AM designation for minesweepers as I was shocked when I got the message of this TF running into a minefield and nearly endless messages of AM x clearing one or two mines... thank god there weren´t four hundred mines, otherwise I would still be watching those messages pop up... [:D] note to myself: remember minesweepers are AM now and not MSW anymore...

mmm... there are two very small TFs in the area that have no escort... this is one single xAKL that was ordered to bring a fragment (a single mot support squad) of a base force to Milne... It is sunk by gunfire of course... oh those die rolls and IJN subs... no need for them to have radar, they spot everything anyway... the damned sub didn´t even fire torps... the ship and the fragment are lost...

Task forces break off...

we´ve spotted an enemy TF West of Adak yesterday and as our BB TF was covering the resupply/reinforcement TF (did the same as at the same time at Milne Bay, moving in eng units and supplies to build up the base full speed) that already is moving out today, I decided to investigate what the enemy is having West of Adak. It was already clear to me when our sub stumbled into this TF earlier this night so seeing this engagement wasn´t that surprising anymore. I´m no friend of naval engagements if I don´t feel to have a superior force (usually in ship classes, means BBs vs CAs or CA vs CLs) and in this case nearly two identical forces met to fight it out. While we had more DDs, our DDs were more or less useless, had some hopes for CL Helena to trash the enemy CL or some DDs with here fast firing and numerous 6inch guns but she performed not so good. This engagement really lasted forever, guess I´ve watched it nearly halve an hour. The first 1/3 of the engagement was a horror to watch as Maryland was hit hard by Hyuga´s 36cm fire while landing only on 16inch shell on target in return. When Ise joined the fight, Maryland was already heavily damaged but still able to fight back. Hyuga was then hit by Maryland twice but also finished by Ise and Hyuga´s counterfire. Maryland was the first ship that went down in this engagement. At that point Hyuga was heavily damaged and I expected the engagement to end sooner than later with the enemy getting away and us losing a BB for no gain. But it was Nevada´s turn then, taking on Hyuga and hitting here hard with 14inch shells. Hyuaga was lying dead in the water when Ise started firing 36cm shells at Nevada that BOUNCED off her armor!! [X(] OMG, how´s that possible I´ve thought. At that time I wasn´t aware that Nevada and Maryland had the same armor so I´ve thought that the 36cm armament could just not penetrate the thicker armor of Nevada while they could harm Maryland. It was after the battle when I checked the stats to find out that both have the same armor. Don´t know what was going on then as Nevada was hit four times by 36cm shells, none of them penetrating. Nevada ended the battle with 2 points of fire damage.

Our AA cruisers were undergunned for a naval engagement, even though they were hitting the enemy light cruisers a couple of times, the 5 inch guns did no damage. Helena scored some 6 inch hits on several ships, only DD Suresushio was hit hard by our DDs and is expected to be a loss to. We´ve got three DDs damaged, none of those will sink. They are disbanded at Adak but will leave for the West Coast a day later as their major flt damage is below 10 for each of them. In the end I would rate this engagement as an Allied victory, we sunk a BB and a DD and have lost a BB. We´ve got far more BBs than the enemy and without a single loss at Pearl Harbour we can afford one old BB lost anyway. Not just that, this engagement was also a mission kill, as I doubt that the enemy TF is causing us much trouble the next days. Ise for sure has no main gun ammo left (same as Nevada, completely empty) and I´m not really afraid of the two light cruisers. Lots of torps were fired from both sides, nobody achieved a hit.

An amazing figth and real fun to watch. The only thing that I thought to be off was the short time when the BBs started shooting at each other with small calibre weapons after closing to 2000 yards. After a long boring period, this PBEM is really getting interesting again...

lots of burning steel at the end of the engagement... [:D]

this is the TF that covers unloading at Milne Bay... don´t want to run into the next enemy SC TF... good thing that the encounter near Adak resulted in a loss of an IJN BB because if the enemy BBs would have whiped the floor with our BBs Rainer could think about attacking us here with some surface combat forces. Now he´s probably more cautios... especially if he spots British battlewaggons...

God damn, what are my DDs doing? Next attack on my carriers, first time that the salvo missed my carrier... [:@] and the sub gets away unharmed of course... Brought in even more DDs, some 50 DDs (all modern US DDs) are operating with my fleet near Milne Bay now but that won´t scare the IJN subs... I can´t even protect my capitol ships and other than US subs, the IJN subs seem to concentrate on firing on fat targets instead of the escorts... while there isn´t, it nearly seems like the IJN gets a working target routine and the Allied don´t as we just keep on firing on escorts 50% of the time...

this is the start of the usual stupid non strike coordination... everything is fine except having all squadrons set to the air HQ in place and not having killed a chicken on my desk... stupidity... at times I´ve got the feeling that the biggest influence in the change of airwar from WITP to AE is that they only got the routines go screw up airstrikes and therefore together with all the implemented chrome you get the feeling it would be different...

amazingly enough, the Zeroes were once again shredded by the Warhawks... mid 42 and all you need vs. Zeroes and Oscars are 70 skilled pilots...

different location, same stupidity of course... also here, everthing is fine... nevertheless one squadron after another goes in alone... STUPIDITY!

The other side of the stupiditiy is the fact that you still face hordes of enemy fighters on Cap as they will intercept just fine... the Warhawks were butchered by the ongoing dive of course... only a 15:0 kill rate... oh, it´s so different...

not that the bomber strikes would look different... the only difference is that there are dozens of squadrons, some aircraft from different squadrons arrive over the target at the same time by accident, but probably not by design... as it is designed, you can rely on "strike packs"... that get butchered at rates up to 20:1+ when you employ 70 skilled pilots... it definetely is different, because in WITP I couldn´t produce such off results when I´ve sent out pilots in equal aircraft with equal experience...

not that it would be over already, I had of course another Lightning squadron set to sweep... this was the never ending dive on our side, the result is obvious... shaking head...

this one "saved" the day, otherwise only we would have lost fighters in the dozen... a clean 10:0 in this engagement...

yeah baby, and strike number 8 is going in alone... is there a stronger word for "stupid"?

must have been a hard task in WWII to fly in formation... I´ve figured out that you get nice results when you´ve got squadrons with 70 exp but this is something you won´t ever reach in a PBEM probably, at least not when you send out your fully trained fighter squadrons and halve of the pilots die on their first mission... it´s all about experience, noticed this when I used the editor and gave all pilots 70 exp to start with... this "strike pack" routine is just a borked piece of design, sorry, noone can argue that uncoordination was an issue in 98% of the strike missions flown in the Pacific... that´s just bullocks and surely not improves the air routines at all, it produces even stranger results than WITP could come up with... as said earlier, the stratosphere sweep isn´t an issue in this PBEM anymore, change with the patch or not, the highest flying aircraft is not getting the dive anymore automatically, which is good... the "coordination" as seen in this turn as a good example (can repeat this as often as you wish) is nothing but a wet fart that has nothing to do with reality... for sure WWII era, trained fighter squadrons could launch a strike of 27 Warhawks from three squadrons together(3*9 not 3*27 mind you), when being launched from a level 5 airfield... not happening here when trying to do that from Milne Bay flying to Buna... Same goes for India of course, having huge airfields, not possible to have even two squadrons fly together (out of five)... don´t tell me that at least two flying together wouldn´t be possible in real life... having it NOT working nearly all of the time is just plain wrong... if things are designed that they can go wrong due to a lot of different issues then that´s fine by me, but getting it to work only twice out of a hundred times is a joke...[8|]

all 8 fighter squadrons employed today where top notch, all they´ve been lacking is experience, but I can´t get them to 70 without using the editor and that´s what you´ve got to do BEFORE you start a game...

uncoordination and the dive resulted in our losses today, losses we can´t sustain at all... the old tip applies again, don´t use your airforce if you lose doing so... a very good tip... let´s postpone the war into mid 45... [;)]

Grampus takes a hit and is out of action... total damage is around 40, will probably take 2 days in Brisbane´s shipyard to have the sub 100% fixed... repair rates should be looked at... can´t this be done under "bug busting"? I doubt that someone would think you could fix a completely wrecked sub in just a couple of days so you could say "it´s a bug" [;)]

rather strange TF composition IMO... what are PBs doing in this TF? Can PBs be included in a fast transport TF? For me this looks like a Tokyo Express operation (heading somewhere into the Lae area I guess), while Express is an exaggaration when there are PBs... [:D]

near San Francisco isn´t really true, this is quite some distance to the coast... I once again forgot to keep an eye on my ship withdrawels and you don´t get an "allert" message two weeks or so before you have to withdraw a ship. Therefore you end up with your ships somewhere and can´t withdraw them at the day you should because you can only withdraw them when their at their "national port". In this case I had to send two APs from Pearl Harbour directly to SF because I have just noticed it the day when I had to withdraw them (due to the message "two ships overdue for withdrawel" [8|]).

Note to myself, check ship withdrawels at least once a week...

it´s official now, Rainer has moved he wonder weapon into his Southern frontlines... Tojos from Gasmata are sweeping our leaking Cap, one of the features we hate the most since day one of WITP as the player just can´t do anything against it... the Tojos are uber if they encounter a hundred of our aircraft, how much more uber do they become when they get a shot at leaking Cap of 6-10 fighters? Having a kill rate of 50:1 in the end? Both our Warhawks were damaged, one was written off... we did not get a shot at the enemy...

one thing is for sure, non-coordination works for both sides exactly the same... the usual 95% of a squadron goes in and then there´s the 5% fragment following... in this case we outnumbered the rest of the Tojos 4:1 and shot one of the buggers down...

2 medium bombers were lost, a disaster for the US airforce as the replacement rate is more or less non existant for medium USAAF bombers... wonder how the US waged war, they couldn´t have done it with medium bombers... I have to completely rely on heavy bombers as I get more of them from mid 43 than I get medium bombers for the USAAF. Until mid 44 I get only something like 10 Mitchells each month and that´s it. You can lose 20 in one turn if you run into two dozen Zeroes... [8|]

You must be playing a different version of AE than mine. Starting in 6/43 I get 25 B25D1's along with 10 B25D's per month.

I have to check that again, I´ve already looked at it a couple of times and always came to the result that from mid 43 to to mid 44 there are only 10 Mitchells. [&:]

I´m talking about US ones, not counting those that go to the Australian units for example.

Australians don't get the B25D1. They get the Mitchell II and then the III.

US gets 30 B25D1s a month from 2/43 to 8/44. You get another 75 B25Gs in the middle of the year. So far, I have found that to be enough. Eventually the B24Js are in plentiful supply and I just replace medium bombers with them if running short of airframes.

ah, I was wrong, it´s not mid 43, it´s mid 44. From mid 44 on you get far more heavy bombers than medium bombers it seems. All you get are 15 B-25J1 per month. As it´s mid 44 it makes it even stranger for me though. And when looking at the armament of this late Mitchell version then I don´t want to run into fighters anyway as the bomber can´t defend itself with more or less a completely forward firing armament. While historical correct, the 8 fwd MGs make the bomber less usefull than the early versions with "all around defensive armament". Oh well, quite a luxury though if you can use the hordes of 4Es instead of medium bombers I guess. But this will also mean that the USAAF will nearly exclusively fly heavy bombers form mid 44 on, no matter what mission.

Don't forget the B-25C factory will continue to upgrade and produce later versions. That adds 20 planes/mo to whatever version you are on.
