Ship Type ?

Post by kirk23_MatrixForum »

I have a question that needs a little clarification please,I just bought this game yesterday after many days on the fence so to speak,my question is in regard to ship type ( Escorts ) ?

In naval terms escort = job discription or mission and not ship type, even a battleship can be an Escort to unarmed merchant ships,I think the Escort type should be renamed CORVETTE ?[;)]

I also note that there is only one type of Cruiser listed, what Happened to Battlecruiser,Heavy cruiser & Light cruiser designations ?[&:]

I feel that the below list should represent the available ship that can be built.

SHIP TYPES.

CORVETTE.
FRIGATE.
DESTROYER.
LIGHT CRUISER.
HEAVY CRUISER.
BATTLECRUISER.
BATTLESHIP.
CARRIER ? [8D]
Regards,
Graham.

All 5 military classes are used to provide you with ship variety (DW automatically obsoletes older designs if a new one of the same class was created recently thus limiting your ability to create 3 ships of the same class) and for me they are sufficient. I never use more than 3 classes in fact. Escort for patrolling and escorting, frigate for fast attack ship and DE as a heavy brawler is more than enough IMHO.

AI does not differentiate between these 5 classes (escort, frigate, de, cr, cap ship) and seems to be using the same scripts for their behaviour, so there is actually no difference between the classes. You can make a size 500 escort with tons of guns and armor or make a size 150 capital ship and send it to patrol duty.

One thing to remember, they AREN'T classes... they are roles, hence why you can use any image in the game with any role, and the only size limit is what you can physically build and afford

Okim, so if I understand you correctly, you can make 3 designs of each ship class, before the AI turns one into obsolete. So while design automation is on, you can still design your own ships without fearing that the AI will make some of your designs obsolete (unless you get access to a new technology, right)?
