Matrix Games offers free unlimited re-downloads in the infinite future.

Matrix Games offers free unlimited re-downloads in the infinite future.

This thread is to clear up alot of confusion or questions regarding the Distant Worlds purchase process and policy.

The Digital River insurance fee can be deleted from the sale screen using the trash can icon next to it. Digital River just requires Matrix Games to add that to the sale list.
Matrix Games offers free unlimited re-downloads of your games in the infinite future.

I'm just perplexed that Matrix Games does not advertise and note in the purchase process their excellent policy.
The seemingly widely unknown excellent policy may be discouraging SOME potential customers from purchasing Distant Worlds because they would rather prefer to purchase from OTHER online digital stores that offer unlimited downloads; or the potential customers would rather not deal with making a backup CD or paying extra for a CD and box.

Matrix Games, will you explain why your excellent unlimited free re-download policy is not advertised in your forum stickies, your purchase site, and your purchase process?
Does a Digital River contract prohibit you from doing so?(If so, then that contract should be amended.)

Shouldn't this thread, or one like it, be stuck to the top of every Matrix Games game forum?

Yep. Erik Rutins of Matrix Games has said, for example, that there are players that have used free re-download to downlaod games that they purchased seven years ago.

Digital River requires the info in the store to be as it is.  I can tell you this on our forum and all our long-standing customers are aware that re-downloads go way past 30 days or 2 years, but we're not allowed to put this in the store as the store has to stick with DR's policies in this regard.

It's against DR policy, so I'm betting it's in the contract. My theory is DR does this to protect themselves. If a software company closes down, DR will no longer keep that software on their servers for re-download unless you paid the extended download fee, then the software will be available on their servers for 2 years whether the software company is around or not.

My .02 cents.

Well... it's insurance through Digital River incase Matrix Games goes away. Heh.

Also, the Digital River insurance OPTION apparently is only for 2 years. Heh.

So... it's up to you to decide whether it was worth it.

Backing up by burning to CD is my insurance but good to know that a download or two from Matrix is not out of the question. Unlimited downloads? I didn't think ER meant that though.

Why anybody would EVER want to buy "insurance" when they get a fully functioning installer file in the download is beyond me.

I bought insurance, and I'm pretty smart... But then again, if you don't need insurance, maybe I'm not as smart as I think I am... In fact I suppose I'm really quite dumb, because I've bought several games off Matrix, and payed for the insurance every time... What I silly boy! [:(]

Matrix Games offers free unlimited re-downloads in the infinite future.

This thread is to clear up alot of confusion or questions regarding the Distant Worlds purchase process and policy.

This is just adding to the confusion! ;)

Has anyone from Matrix actually confirmed this? Eric stated in this thread:
Actually, by default you have a year to re-download. If you buy the extended download service, you can re-download forever. That's the reality of it, despite what the store says (DR requires us to say 30 days and 2 years).
which indicates that if you don't buy "insurance" you get 1 year access to your game download.

And this is not guaranteed, I have had download links from DR expire in a few months, well under a year.

The default is actually 1 year and Forever rather than 30 days and 2 Years. With that said, as long as we are around, if you get a message from DR that you cannot re-download all you have to do is contact us and we'll reset your downloads. So effectively there are unlimited downloads as long as we exist. The only reason to get the download insurance is if we for some reason disappear as then you would be bound by DR's policies rather than ours.
