What is the best way to evacuate an island?

I made a landing, due to poor recon the enemy is much stronger than I thought. Bottomline, my soldiers am getting the crap kicked them and they need emergency evacuation from the beach. The enemy has very strong guns on the island and sank a lot of my shipping while making the initial landing, killing many of the troops before they ever reached the beachhead. I dread the thought of going back in there in the daytime and losing even more ships. Is there a way I can evacuate them at night?

You can use "Fast Transport" task forces.  OTOH, there was a bug involved with using these to pick up units and I don't know if it is fixed.

Another option is using float planes as transports.  Make sure you set them to night operations.  If you controlled the base, you could use regular air transports as well.  Note that enemy CAP in the hex can cause ugly transport losses.

Float planes work too (albeit they dont carry much) but are immune to CD guns. set them to troop transport and 'pick up' commands,

There's no way to get a lot of troops off without putting your ships back under fire. If you use float planes you will only get dirbs and srabs off each turn.

I guess next time you should maybe do a better recon job. I'd send a bunch of ships there and just spend one day there picking up troops and take your licks. What ever you manage to get off take it back home and rebuild. It will take some time to rebuild but at least you don't lose the whole unit.

The bug is fixed. It had to do with one-hex islands not functioning properly. It was fixed either last patch or the patch before.
