now playing for several hours...

I got this game, because someone said, that this is EU in space. And I LOVE EU. In a way it is true, but there are a lot of differences. So this is what I think of this game so far:

Exploration is definitely more exciting in DW and I love the many small surprises - I hope there is more to come.
Colonization is what shall I say, just a click-click-party, here I miss a few more opportunities or problems that relate to! no natural disasters or diseases or building opportunities etc.
Combate is also missing something - there could well be for example formations etc..
Diplomacy works fine, I think.

Oh, didn't I mention that - I like micromanagement, and it is not impossible, especially not in the small star-systems. I do not need the big ones.

Thats just my thoughts.

I like the interactions with the various empires, only lacking for me is a setting to make easier or harder, like make stuff cost 1.5 more for hard 2X for super hard,  but I agree with you the combat is simplistic, I think a big complex combat model would defeat the goal though... maybe not, like no 3d space battles, HARD to do... or sounds in space!!! it is not perfect, but it is fun , no?

Personally, I like the combat.
While simple, it works... with the exception of Auto vs. Manuel battle control issues
Of course, I can only speak from small scale battles thus far, my mind may alter once I start having larger battles

Exploration is ok... nothing exciting, but then I feel it's not really possible to make exploring exciting in 4x space games
Sure, there are some interesting things to find, but not enough variance, I tend to find dozens of "abandoned" ships/bases, usually equipped with advanced technology, some ruins here and there... and that's about it, the rest is about finding where colonizable planets are and other empires systems, which is basically the same as in any 4x space game, like I say, not much you could be done here

I agree about colonization, the only real reasons too colonize are for taxes and building ports/larger ships... that's it, oh and for resource storage... so planets feel like large warehouses populated by tax collectors (and disloyal citizens in some cases)...
This is something I'm missing from Space Empires, the ability to "specialize" a planet, or too determine/influence it's infrastructure yourself
I realize the options could be too few, research, resources and ship building are managed through bases.  So you loose 80% of the reasons to have control right there tbh

And I can't really say much about diplomacy yet, but thus far, it feels really basic

+1
Big is nice, granted, but no-one has yet made a fool-proof method to make it fun and workable at the same
A 250-star map does me nicely, of course would be nice if we could choose map size as well as star count
As for micromanagement, too much is bad, but so is not enough... this is a 4x game, not a console FPS
