The expanding your air groups trick for CVs

Post by Bandkanon »

I remember reading in the AARs about the trick to expand carrier air groups on land and then placing them into your CVs. Some have felt that this is gamey. But I would like to know the detailed process of how to go about doing it. Can anyone tell me. Thanks in advance.

You expand the groups on CVs and place them on LAND, not the other way around. I personally think it's OK within limits, though the 64-plane super group strikes me as gamey.

1. Empty CV of all groups
2. Put single group on CV; set to RESIZE (some groups cannot be set to RESIZE if they have resize dates)
3. Form the CV into a TF, then immediately disband, or just wait a turn. Either way, the group will now re-size

Generally, the group will expand to fit the CV.

I'm thinking about building up a super duper F4 recon squadron. Nothing will be able to hide from me.

Thanks QBall for the quick reply. Does this work only for CVs or can it also be used for CVLs?

Thanks

Sure does seem gamey to me, I'd clear it with your opponent before I did it.

It can be used on CVLs too. I upgraded a couple Val and Kate units before my opponent and I decided this was gamey in the extreme and then stopped it.

Yes, it does seem a bit gamey...but my Allied opponent doesn't seem very concerned that I plan on doing it...he has already agreed to let me do it...

By the way, what exactly makes it so gamey...is it the ability to train more pilots than normal? But wouldn't IRL the Japanese could have done the same?

I've seen a very long list of rules governing this, but I'm not quite sure where it was. Basically, the new size of an airgroup is governed by the type of CV, it's size, the date, the side and maybe even the type of airgroup. Smaller CV types are capable of resizing groups to a large portion of it's max capacity. I think it's unlikely that you'll be able to resize a group to completely fill a large CV.

Edit : So the rules are posted here
The AE-Wiki, help fill it out
