I have a number of planets that I want to snap the screen to, without deselecting the ship/fleet that I currently have selected. Is there any way to do that?

On the selection screen click the planets with the arrows, then the planet that you want comes up, click on it's name.

Did you try the shift-ctrl + (1-0)? I use these for my shops all the time.

These options de-select the ship that I am targetting. I really need to be able to select colony ships and send them to a base in my forward area, where I have them refuel before I send them out to colonize. I have been doing this manually for many hours and can't believe that there is no options for this.

Go to the colonies screen, select your colony from the list and click "View selected colony".
This should only snap your view to the colony.
Otherwise, the two arrows above the infopanel on the lower left are your history. You can click the left arrow and have your last object selected.

Yup, thats the one that bugged me too for a while. Very clumsy controls, I wish there were more intuitive. So basically every time I have to send my ships to protect the gas mining station I'll have to go to options and do all this stuff.. Hmmm.
